Volume 381, November 11, 2016 GCT Weekly BEAK Job Shadowing Success for GCT Student Austin March was one of three students who job shadowed at the Greene County Sheriff's Department on October 21, 2016. Austin rode along with Reserve Deputy and Elementary Assistant Principal Keith Davis and got to see several different views of law enforcement during the day. Austin was a great student and asked very good questions concerning Law Enforcement jobs and what might take place on a daily basis. Thank you to Keith Davis for the photo and information. GCT Lady Eagles Team up to Provide Children s Gifts The GCT Lady Eagles Basketball team collected gifts for children at LeBonheur Children s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. The scheduled delivery for the children was on Thursday, October 27 th, 2016. On the way the girls made a stop at Nettleton High School where the Nettleton Lady Raiders basketball team provided additional gifts for the Lady Eagles to take to the children. GCT appreciates the generous spirit of the Nettleton team as they teamed up with a conference rival for a great cause. GCT Crowley s Ridge Park Interpreter, Laura Kimbal would like to thank the GCT ROTC for their help on Saturday, 10-29-16. Laura stated, Your group of kids helped us out so much on Saturday. We had around 800 people for Ghosts, Legends, and the Unexplained on Friday night, so the park was in desperate need of attention come Saturday morning and your bunch was up to the challenge. Not only did they help me out tremendously with the heavy props and decorations, they were respectful, kind, and willing to do anything to help out. The staff here at Crowley s Ridge State Park appreciates all the help and I look forward to working with you again soon. Thank you to Col. French Club members really enjoyed themselves during Trunk or Treat held on Halloween at GCT Elementary School. Students had a great time tossing bean bags into buckets filled with prizes, pinning the boo on the ghost, receiving lots of candy, and having their pictures made with our very own GCT Disney princesses. GCT Jr. High Student Council participated in the Annual Trunk or Treat on Monday, October 31, 2016 held at the Elementary School gym for the community. The student council members manned the bowling game as children received a piece of candy for each pin that was knocked down. Candy was donated by the students and Jr. High School faculty members. Thank you to students, Ethan Mason, Olivia Combs, Colby Lucy, and all of those who helped make the event a success. GCT Jr. High School Student Council Sponsor, Carol Surber, stated, It was a lot of fun and I am certainly proud of the students for wanting to spend their Halloween helping other children. Key club members at GCT High School held a bake sale and sold Hallow-grams on October 31st to raise money for infant tetanus shots. According to TheEliminateProject.org/TrickorTreat, a newborn dies every 11 minutes from this disease. All $422.60 raised will be donated to The Eliminate Project. Almost 100 million mothers need help and the GCT students decided to take action. Thank you to Patricia Roush, the sponsor, for the photos and information. They traveled last weekend to Springfield, Missouri for competition and brought home one first place, one second place and two third place trophies. Greene County Tech School District EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT SoPHia Holland has worked for the Greene County Tech School District for the past five years. She serves as a Pre- AP History Teacher at GCT Jr. High School. Sophia has a BSE and MSE in Social Science from Arkansas State University and is registered to attend ASU again in the Spring of 2017. Sophia is married to Shannon Holland and they have sons Blake who is 21, Clayton who is 11, and Jackson who is 8. Sophia stated that she loves working at GCT. During her first and second years of teaching at GCT, she lost both of her parents. She stated, My Tech family wrapped their arms around me and never let go. I felts so blessed to be of such a loving group. Sophia s oldest son Blake is in the U.S. Army and when he was deployed overseas in the Middle East, her GCT family prayed for and asked about him every week during the ten months he was gone. Blake is in Germany now, and the Tech family still prays for and send their love to Blake all of the time. Sophia stated, It s amazing. Sophia loves spending time with family reading and traveling. She stated, We go to Navarre Beach in Pensacola every summer for a week. My parents took 6 kids there when we were growing up so now I take my kids there. I absolutely love searching the beaches and ocean for shells. I spend most of my vacation looking for seashells. When I went to Costa Rica, the customs department took my seashells, but I did get home with a bag of coconuts and some sea urchins. I love the ocean, and it s a place to go when I miss my parents. Sophia also loves to cook, and does so on the last Tuesday night of every month for the Breaking Bonds Ministry in Jonesboro, a bible study group of Jonesboro First United Church. She also loves to sit in the bleachers and watch her husband coach peewee football, basketball, and baseball for her youngest sons. The Holland family is a sports family, Roll Tide. Sophia also loves to run outside with her sister and submitted several photos because she could not select just one.
