3 What s Going on at Paine Primary Kindergarten students from Mrs. Segers and Mrs. Shorter s classes participate in a STEM learning experience. To stimulate students interest, Mrs. Segers and Mrs. Shorter read several different versions of the Three Little Pigs. They discussed the different houses that were constructed and shared ideas on how they might build a house that the wolf could not destroy. HTHS teachers Jason Dooley and Chris Walters worked with Mrs. Segers and Mrs. Shorter to conduct a problem based lesson. The children worked in pairs to build a house to test against the wolf. Using a large fan to simulate the wolf huffing and puffing, students eagerly watched as their houses were tested. They took data on which materials were the most sturdy. If a house survived a 30 second blast from the fan, it was deemed a sturdy structure. What an awesome learning opportunity these children enjoyed!
