1 Happy October! Issue 2, October 2018 We hope that you have been enjoying these early autumn days as we look toward the great events that are part of the fall season. It has been a busy start to the school year, with plenty of things to be excited about. A significant fall highlight is our annual Terry Fox run and fundraiser for cancer research. In total, University Heights raised just over $ for cancer research. What an amazing amount! Thanks to Miss Dallner and the supporting staff who helped to make this year s run such a success. October has started with some excitement, as both our cross country and volleyball teams have seen some action. October 4: Meet the Teacher Night (5:30 to 7:30) October 16 to 18: CCAT Grade 4 Testing October 26: PA Day - No School October 30: Photo Retake Day and Class Pictures October 31: Spirit Day November 9: Grade 1 to 8 Progress Reports and Early Years Communication of Learning Sent Home Thank you to Mrs. Kennedy, Ms. Nizamis and Mrs. Austin who coached our school cross country team. Our team had a great showing at the regional meet and we have two students who will be competing in the TVDSB finals. We wish them all the best in their run. Our volleyball teams have also begun their season. The boys are being coached by Mr. Reid and the girls by Mrs. Beattie and our School Council chair, Tracy Goodman. The season runs through October into December. We wish all of our teams the best as we head in to the season. Finally, we are excited to share that we have a new school website. Visit to find news, photos, videos and our event calendar. The website is updated regularly with important information for our families. You can also subscribe to our calendar and events through the website. On behalf of the school staff, we hope that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend filled with family time and many things to be thankful for. Sincerely, Mr. M. Tamasi Principal
2 UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS SOCCER Congratulations to the University Heights soccer team for their strong showing at the regional tournament. The team finished the tournament with a record of 2 wins and 2 losses, which included a one-goal loss to the eventual silver medalist. This result earned Wilfrid Jury 3rd place in the region. Thanks to Mr. Alward, Mrs. Kennedy and Mrs. Campbell for their time and dedication as the coaches. DOGS AT SCHOOL As a reminder to our school families and community, dogs are not permitted on the school property before, during or after school. We greatly appreciate your support in this matter. VISITORS TO UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS We support our parents being engaged in the school community; however, we also want to maintain a safe learning environment for our staff and students. If you are in the school, for any reason, all visitors MUST come directly to the main office. The office staff will be happy to assist you. We appreciate everyone s cooperation and understanding as we do our best to ensure the safety of all at University Heights Public School. Follow us on Twitter (@UniversityHeig1 ) OCTOBER SPIRIT DAY AT UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS At UH we love to have fun and build our school spirit. Each month, we dedicate a day to sharing and celebrating our spirit. Our first spirit day will be held on October 31st in celebration of Halloween. Kindergarten children are invited to wear orange and black. Grades 1 to 8 have the choice of wearing either costumes, OR orange and black. If your child is wearing a costume to school please ensure they meet the following expectations: No blood or scary costumes No weapons No masks Thank you for your support and stay tuned for further spirit day information.
