Santa Teresa Women s Golf Club CAPTAIN S CORNER We re closing in on the end of our year and oh what a year it s been so far. Our course has yielded some pretty low scores this year. CAPTAIN S TROPHY I want to congratulate our Winners for the last four months. June July Aug Sept Grace Wada Naomi Nakano Fudge Masuda Marge Santa Net 68 62 64 65** **won in a tie-break against Martha Kawanami who broke 100 for the first time in years. Well done ladies! Check out their photos on our wall of fame. Dates in the Future Oct 20 Dec. 2 Super Guest Day 50 Shades of Green Holiday Party/Gen Meeting CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Congratulations to Sue Treleaven, your new 2016 Club Champion and winner of this prestigious award for the very first time. See 2016 Club Championship Summary(p. 4) for a description from an on course reporter. HOME & HOME Accolades go out to Gina Gordon who shot a career round 85 during Home and Home and she along with Dora Moutafian handled their Coyote Creek competitors very nicely. However, while Gordon and Moutafian won the battle, Santa Teresa lost the war by seven points (219.5-212.5) when the dust settled after day two. It s too bad that we lost by those measly 7 points on our own home course. It was both a competitive and fun event despite the loss. Thank you to Diane Tibbetts and Mary Zimmerman from Coyote Creek for organizing. We thank Mona Signor and Soon Chi for putting together a wonderful Club Championship with a record 50 plus players participating. It was great to see Karen Buesing, after being absent for many months, back swinging a golf club at our Club Championship this year. CHANGES UPCOMING IN 2017 At the most recent General Meeting held in September changes were voted upon that result in changes in the dues we pay and how we pay for sweeps, Associate membership and the Tees we play from. The subject matter will be covered in following articles. Joan Takemoto Newsletter Editor October 2016

Santa Teresa Women s Golf Club 2 JAN HEW SHOOTS CAREER ROUND HOORAY! YIPPEE! This past guest day, with nothing on the line, no game, no competition, Jan Hew, went ballistic on our course firing a two-over 75. This is cause for accolades. Jan has had an illustrious career in golf as she s been the Club Champion at Palo Alto which as many of you knows, is a difficult hilly course where she says her best recorded round was 78. Everything came together last Thursday, everything dropped in for birds and pars. I was out of my mind, she commented, a huge smile on her face of satisfied elation. It s not often that we see these kinds of rounds fired but as I said in my Captain s Corner, we ve had a record-breaking year for low rounds posted. I believe we re on the right road, and with our membership growing as it is, we have a lot to look forward to. Thanks to all for this exciting year, STWGC MEMBERSHIP Membership Renewal for the 2017 golf season at Santa Teresa will begin on October 1, 2016 and end on October 31, 2016. A no-reply email with a 2017 Renewal Form Attachment will be sent to all Regular members and existing Associate members before October 1, 2016. Please fill it out promptly and return with your check to the address on the form. Your prompt attention will help Jan LaFetra and her roster committee prepare our 2017 blue Roster book for distribution at the December 2, 2016 Holiday Luncheon/General Meeting. Additional Renewal Forms will also be available at the Starter's desk for the next several weeks. Associate Membership At the September 1, 2016 General Meeting, the membership voted to stop accepting NEW Associate Members. Ladies, who were Associate Members in 2016, will be permitted to renew their Associate membership. The Club is eliminating our Associate Membership Category beginning in 2017. Those who are already Associates can remain. Honorary Membership The Club wants to honor our long time active members. On September 1 st, the Club voted to implement an Honorary Membership Category that we believe reflects the direction our club wishes to go. It is time that we begin to honor those who have been active regular members in good standing for years and who have decided they can no longer continue as regular members. The following are the criteria for honorary membership. 1. Is an active member in good standing for at least 10 years 2. Make a formal request to the board. 3. Pay dues of $15.00. 4. Join PWGA. 5. Can play no more than 12 times a year. 6. Must participate in weekly sweeps. 7. Cannot play in major tournaments or special tournaments or vie for Captain s Trophy and Putts. Sweeps This has also been a year of visioning for our club s bright and promising future. At our most recent General Meeting held in September, changes were made on how we collect sweeps. You will notice on you renewal forms that yearly sweeps aren t a part of the fee structure. Starting next year, you will pay as you play. A $2 sweeps fee will be collected by the pro-shop along with your green fees. Each of you will have a credit account with the pro shop where you can use your sweeps winnings for merchandise or to pay golf fees. Refer to this Web site for current addresses of members http://santateresa.ghinclub.com/

Santa Teresa Women s Golf Club 3 SUNSHINE Yoshiko Takeshita fell down on the evening of August 9th and severely strained her ankle. She will not be able to play golf for about a month and a half. Please keep Yoshiko in your thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. Peggy Fischer had foot surgery on Thursday, August 11th. She says she is doing as well as can be expected. She will also not be playing golf for a while. Please keep Peggy in your thoughts and prayers for a speedy recover. If you hear of anyone who is ill, injured or has a death in the family, please let me know as soon as possible. My phone number is (408) 253-6839 and my email address is fleaang@aol.com. SOCIAL We have many new golfers this year and I want to ensure you are aware of the holiday luncheon. It s a time for celebration! We gather at the Villages in other than our golf attire. We eat, drink and talk. Winnings you ve accumulated during the year are distributed. Then a short meeting which counts towards meetings required for membership in the Santa Teresa Women s Golf Club is conducted and Annual Awards are distributed. Mark your calendars for DEC 2 we don t want you to miss it! STARTERS & SCORERS Starter and Scorer sign-up sheets will be available once the schedule is approved. An email blast will be sent out to notify you when the sign-up sheet will become available. Now is a good time to look over your calendar for next year and if you later find a conflict in your schedule, you can easily make arrangements to trade with someone. TOURNAMENT Can t believe there s approximately two months remaining on our Tournament Schedule. We ve had very good attendance at our weekly tournaments averaging around 55 ladies. Here are some highlights of upcoming tournaments: 10/13 Beat the Pro 10/20 Super Guest Day 10/17 Harvest Shoot 11/3 Last Captain s Trophy & Board Meeting. CHANGES TO TEES WE PLAY Once a quarter, not including the winter months, we will be using the blue-white combo tees on a day that does not involve special or major tournaments, eclectics or special events. (Voted on Sept. 1, 2016 at General Meeting)

Santa Teresa Women s Golf Club 4 2016 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SUMMARY This year, the annual Club Championship Tournament took place on September 8th and 15th. We thank you so much for your participation. We could not have successfully completed the tournament without the players. Susan Treleaven is the 2016 club champion! The runner up is Rebecca Reese. Those two played to a tie in regulation. It was so exciting and fun to see them in a sudden-death play-off. They were amazing. Congratulations to Susan & Rebecca for their well deserved accomplishments. We wish to congratulate the other flight winners as well. See the results and photos at the end of this Newsletter (pp 8-9). We had a surprise gift for two lucky people (Soon Chi and Mary Stern). We drew names among our tournament participants. The prize was "twosome free golf tickets" for the Santa Teresa GC, contributed by club manager Rob. Our thanks go to him for his generous contribution. We had 53 players participate this year!! Thankfully, we had no major issue during either day's competition. Hopefully you all had great fun and a golfing memory to last a lifetime. Many of you contributed in various ways to make this a special event. We owe many, many thanks to: Dora Moutafian Printed special scorecards Jan Hew Marie LeBlanc Mickie Lico Deanna Griffin Barbara Hiura Sorted out the members' tournament eligibility and also served as scorer Provided handicaps Published tee-time pairings Provided very important budgeting money Shared many suggestions to improve the tournament participation, and encouraged us Thank you so much to last year chairs, LK Wong and Irene Mohler, for your help and support. LK Wong and Jan Hew -- our dear friends! With your extraordinary help and support, our job was much easier. It was quite a match between Sue Treleven and Becke Reese. Becke led by just one shot after the first round, 80 to 81. That day, Sue was firing on all cylinders which she needed to do as she gives up not just five shots in handicap, but yards in driving distance as well. I had a lot of fun she remarked after round one. There was no falling away in the second round by either competitor as they continued playing a marvelous match and almost equaling one another hole after hole. There were a couple of two shot swings and I as a bystander playing with them, I didn t know who won at the end of 18. As it turned out Sue won the second round by a shot over Becke, so it was a dead even after 36 holes. Both went to the first hole in a sudden death play-off which Sue won with a par. This was indeed, a very exciting match Sue Treleaven, Support for Rules Rosemary Haeckel, and Leta Walter

Santa Teresa Women s Golf Club 6 PWGA Santa Teresa is part of the Monterey Bay Area League. As such we can play in their Area League Play Days. If you want to play in one of the play dates please PHONE me or E-MAIL me. I send in one form for all the players. There are 7 areas in PWGA. You as a member of PWGA can participate in any play date in any area. For areas other than the Monterey Bay Area please contact the Director for that area and ask to participate. Santa Teresa Women s Golf Club 7 Politics: The PWGA and the WGANC have worked out a suggested compromise which would keep the Women s golf organizations on track. The WGANC and PWGA made a presentation to the USGA in June to combine both California and Nevada and have one Public organization and one Private organization. As of now - no decision. Cheryl Wacker and Clare Shafer are looking for their replacements to run the Monterey Bay area district. If you are interested please contact Dirdra Bragg at 916-660-6045 www.ncga.org/rules www.usga.org/rules-hub.html#title26 www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golfexperience/#/welcome Also if you would like to receive the Rules of Golf newsletter, email to rules.newsletter@usga.org Please direct any questions to myself or the pro shop for rules questions Please come out and represent Santa Teresa in some of these events. I look forward to seeing you out there. If you have any questions please call. 415-517-3488 golferbecke@yahoo.com
