GROWS HUMBOLDT HAPPENINGS July 2017 IT S FAIR TIME! It is about fair time!! Summer is going by way too fast. THANK YOU for getting your fair entries in on time, you guys did a GREAT job. I am so excited to see all of the projects that you entered! There will be a lot of information, times, dates, schedules in this newsletter so please take the time to read through it. I look forward to seeing you all at the fair! Making the Best Better! County Fair is a TEAM Effort We need volunteers to help with all aspects of the Humboldt County Fair beginning with the clean up and set up right down to the tear down and clean up, and everything in between. You, your teenage children, your family members, neighbors, co-workers, and friends can all join in and make the 2017 Fair something to remember! Some of the things you could help (taco salad) with would be cleaning, setting things up, helping the judges during the static exhibit judging, helping during livestock shows, livestock weigh-ins, helping with paperwork, clean up, and many other things to make our fair the best experience possible for everyone involved. Volunteering is a great way to model responsibility for our youth! Clay County Fair Entry Deadline is July 31st. Fin the word of the month in the newsletter three times and call or email me will receive a prize. HAP- PY HUNTING! Word of the month (taco salad). Kiersten Beilke Humboldt County Extension and Outreach County 4-H & Youth Coordinator kbeilke@iastate.edu Office- 515-332-2201 ~~ Cell: 515-890-7413 www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/humboldt 1

ATTENTION CAMPERS To All 2017 Humboldt County Fair Campers, The 2017 Humboldt County Fair is quickly approaching. Hope you are as excited as we are for another successful fair. With the increased number of campers at the Humboldt County Fair over the past couple years; there is a need to establish rules for the campground in order to create as many camping spots necessary. -The Fair Board will paint lines on the grass to designate camping spots. Please observe the designated areas and keep your camper/tents within that area. -On Sunday, July 23 rd, starting at 7:30 am until 1:30 pm, you may bring your campers to park them. First come, first choice for the placement of campers. Please bring your camper in order to get your spot of choice. We will not allow anything but the camper to reserve a spot. A fair board member will be there to assist you and answer any questions. -Camping fees will be collected at the time the camper is placed at the fairgrounds. The weekly rate for a camper and electric hook-up is $40. -Please note quiet times throughout the entire fairgrounds will be observed from 11 pm through 5 am. We hope you find this letter informative and helpful in understanding the new campground parking policy. We hope this will allow for more campers and make the campground safer for everyone. The campground will be closed from July 10 th through July 23 rd. Thank you for your support with the Humboldt County Fair. Humboldt County Fair Board Exhibit Building Important Club Fair Info We will be cleaning the Exhibit Building and Fairground on Friday July 21st at 9am until around noon. Then we will set up the Exhibit building and commercial building on Monday July 24th from 9am until 12pm. Please let me know if you are able to come out and help these two days. The more people we have the faster it will go. Club Booth Set Up Time In order to help ease the work load and allow some extra time for clubs to set up their club booths in the Exhibit Building, it will be open on Monday, July 24, from 1:00-6:00 pm. Fair and Project Information 4-H Poster Communications The object of this class is to provide the opportunity for 4-H ers to tell a story or idea visual about 4-H to the general public using the nonverbal form of communication on a poster. This is an exhibit that will be judged on Tuesday, July 25th in the commercial building. For more information and rules check the fair book. No goal sheet is needed for this exhibit, but the youth does need to complete the Poster Communication Exhibit Report Form, which is in the fair book. Inappropriate Food Exhibit for Fair Food and Nutrition exhibitors should review guidelines for inappropriate food exhibits in the Iowa State Extension publication found at: http:// www.extension.iastate.edu/sites/ Is your food exhibit appropriate? Ask yourself: 1. Does this product require refrigeration? 2. Would you eat this product at room temperature? 3. Will the product hold up so it represents a standard when evaluated by judges or viewed by the public? Check the details for specific products. Copyright Info Duplication of copyright material or design should not be used in a 4-H exhibit that is presented as original work by the exhibitor. A copyright design cannot be displayed in a public setting (fair) without permission being granted from the owner of the copyright. When permission has been granted by the owner of the copyright, the exhibit will be displayed and labeled appropriately. Those without permission cannot be displayed. If you have a question, please visit with Kiersten. Writing Goals If you have a question, please visit with Kiersten. Goals Have 3 Parts: 1. The Action- How will you reach your goal? 2. The Results- What will you accomplish? 3. The Timetable- When are you going to do it? Check Your Goal: 1. Does it have the 3 basic parts? (listed above) 2. Do you have control over the goal? 3. Is it measurable? An example of 4-H project goal: I will learn how to make cinnamon rolls by county fair. (Food & Nutrition Exhibit goal, as I would have a plate of cinnamon rolls at the fair) 4-H T-Shirts Humboldt County 4-H t-shirts are available for purchase.
