Saint Lucie Sailing Club The Log November 2018 Incorporated April 4, 1975 From the Commodore October saw lots of activity for our club. Our Race for Champagne/Chocolate Regatta featured an ocean race to Ft. Pierce and back, plus a simultaneous river race in the North Fork. Congrats to Race Captain Mike Brescher for pulling off these first ever twin races! Our combination October Fest/Halloween party was well attended with some creative costumes. Check out the photos on the web site. Thanks to Joanne Swann and Linda Magda for organizing the festivities. We have a couple of our more popular events coming up in November. Our annual festive Membership Party takes place in the Port Salerno Civic Center on the 10 th. Here we celebrate our new members and kick off our 2019 membership drive. Come for dinner and dancing to live music. Prize for the person who brings the most guests (i.e. prospective members). Don t miss this one! The following Saturday (Nov. 17 th ) features the Turkey Trot Regatta. This is a lady s race where the gals show us how to really helm a boat. We always have a good turnout for this. Of course our Saturday beer can and 12 Pack races continue. Don t forget our meeting this month is on Thursday, Nov. 8 th, due to the unavailability of the meeting room due to the mid-term election. Let s enjoy the cooler fall weather and have fun on the water. - Joe Sawyer, SLSC Commodore 1
Racing Scuttlebutt Mike Brescher - Jay Seeley - Jay Seeley The St. Lucie Sailing Club for the first time managed two races on the same day to satisfy the request from the sailors that wanted a river race and the sailors that wanted the traditional ocean race to Ft. Pierce. The RACE for CHAMPAGNE was on October 13th and 14th, which was an ocean cruising race from St. Lucie Inlet to Fort Pierce Inlet and returning the next day from Fort Pierce Inlet to St. Lucie Inlet. There was good participation on both Saturday and Sunday with three boats. The boats raced so hard that they use up all the wind so we had to shorten the course on Saturday due to lack of wind. The finishers for the two days were: 1st2nd3rd- ANGELINA" with Orlando Milian WILD RICE with Asta and Richard SAILSMAN with Jesse Jagoda At the same time the CHAMPAGNE / CHOCOLATE CHALLANGE Race was being sailed on the North Fork of the St. Lucie River. We had a light turnout, probably because we had very light air. The race also had to shorten the course due to lack of wind. The finishers were: 1st2nd- "SLOOP JOHN B" with Mike Diamond "ADAGIO" with Katherine Neurohr Spite the lack of wind; all the sailors seemed to enjoy themselves. This was the solo race for the all lady team to sail Adagio" and they successfully sailed the total course and rightfully were very proud of themselves. 2
12-Pack Update Raced October 20, 2018 - Mike Diamond We had 5 boats participate in the October 12 Pack race and we were glad to see Whisper back on the water. The winds were too light at the start to sail, so we considered our time might be better spent at The Deck. HOWEVER, the breeze miraculously picked up a little, but not enough to head north to marks 6A and 7, so we decided to do a 12:30pm regatta start and a really short course, i.e., a 3/5 start, OCB, #1, OCB, to 3/5 finish. Sloop John B was first over the line and passed by Whisper, just after the #1 mark. The finish, in light air and an outgoing tide, was very close with the first three boats just hoping for a puff. Order of finish: Sloop John B, Whisper, Wild Rice, Adagio, Salty Dogs Due to the heat and lack of breeze we opted for The Deck versus rafting up, though unfortunately, there were no available tables in the A/C, so the heat continued on the porch. Hopefully, this month we ll raft up after the November 3rd race! 3
