Water expands hot bitumen very rapidly as the water turns to steam. Carbon Monoxide and Carbon Dioxide will be formed if the product is ignited. Wear full protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). 6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES Observe all local and national regulations Spills and Disposal: Steps to take to minimise a spill or leak Do not allow the product to enter drains or watercourses. Clean up crews should wear protective clothing i.e. PVC gloves, safety shoes, eye protection If there is no risk involved, stop leaks Stay upwind, remove any source of ignition Wherever possible spilt material should be recovered into a sound container For small spills, all residue should be absorbed onto a suitable absorbent such as earth, sand or proprietary absorbent. For large spills, contain the spill by using booms etc., Inform regulatory authorities immediately (e.g. Fire Brigade, EPA).
