MEMORANDUM DATE: July 8 th, 2016 TO: FROM: SUBJECT: MAYOR & COUNCIL MEMBERS DANNY LENZ, CITY MANAGER CITY MANAGER S REPORT COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM TRAININGS Waseca County will be offering Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training to anyone interested in disaster preparedness training. CERT is a program that educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills. CERT training prepares citizens to serve as first responders until emergency personnel arrive. The FREE training requires attendance at 8 3-hour sessions on Monday and Thursday evenings from September 12 thru October 6. Additional information on the Waseca County CERT Training Program is attached below. CITY APPLICATION FOR DNR LOCAL TRAILS GRANT NOT FUNDED The City has been notified that it was not selected for funding from the 2016 Local Trails Connections Program through the DNR. The City, at the request of the Retired Friends of Waseca, submitted a grant application to provide a portion of the necessary funding to connect the trail running through the marsh to Clear Lake to 19 th Avenue NE so as to provide a connection to Northeast Park and more of the City s existing trail system. The City intends to continue to explore ways to expand our much used trail system. A map showing the proposed trail, labeled Interim Trail is attached. 100% ON TOBACCO LICENSE CHECKS Last week the Waseca Police Department conducted tobacco license compliance checks and had no fails. This marks the 5 th time in the past nine years where all license holders have passed the compliance check. There have been 6 fails total in the past nine years on compliance checks, with 2 addition fails during an educational check partnership with the State of Minnesota. The educational compliance checks are for educational purposes only and do not result in fines or negative comments on the license. UPCOMING WASECA LIBRARY EVENTS The Waseca-Le Sueur Regional Library System is hosting upcoming events at the Waseca Public Library: Brian, the Story Man from England: Brian s interactive story telling will have you up and moving, laughing, and going wild over his wonderful stories! o Brian s performances will take at the following locations: Tuesday, July 19th @ 10:30 am: Montgomery Public Library Tuesday, July 19th @ 1 pm: Le Sueur Public Library Tuesday, July 19th @ 4 pm: Waseca Public Library Library Obstacle Course: Race, jump, balance, and test your skills through the awesome obstacle course at Waseca Public Library on Wednesday, July 20th at 1 pm. Geared for ages 6-12. Veggie Gardening: Learn how to grow your own fresh, delicious veggies with tips from 4-H at Waseca Public Library on July 18th at 1 pm. Geared for ages 6-12. Roadshow Antiques: Local appraiser Carol Bode will talk about antiques and value items at Waterville Public Library on Monday, July 18 th at 4 pm. The public is encouraged to bring in family heirlooms and curiosities to discover their monetary value. Owners and Bode will discuss the

items with the public, similar to the PBS show Antiques Roadshow. Bode will not be appraising any gems or guns at this event. Limited to one item per person. Minecraft Madness: Hunt Minecraft creepers with Nerf bows, play Minecraft Memory, and more at 2 pm on Tuesday, July 19th at Waseca Public Library! This event is exclusively for ages 13-18. Waseca County CERT Training Program 8 evening sessions beginning September 12 6:30 p.m. 9:30 p.m. What is CERT: The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills. Volunteer CERT members will learn the basics of: disaster preparedness fire safety disaster medical operations (assessment, treatment, triage and treating life threatening injuries) controlling utilities in a fire rapid treatment techniques for injuries and shock basic first aid light search and rescue operations disaster psychology organizing teams terrorism awareness CERT volunteer members will receive basic safety equipment: backpack, helmet, goggles, gloves, first aid kit, lights, tools, etc. This FREE training will require approximately 24 hours to complete - (eight 3-hour sessions) Monday and Thursday evenings from September 12-October 6 To enroll, please contact Nancy Lageson at 507-835-0694 or nancy.lageson@co.waseca.mn.us
