FISU WUC HANDBALL IN RIJEKA OFFICIALLY OPENED! The 24th FISU World Universities Handball championship in Rijeka have been officially opened at the Sport centre Zamet in Rijeka. 327 participants from 4 continents gathered together in diversities of their cultures and listened welcome speeches which served as an introduction to all the excitement that awaits us in next week in Rijeka. In front of the FISU organization Kairis Ulp, FISU EC member expressed how proud they are of 24th edition. She mentioned Croatian wealthy handball history and said that Croatia is one of the most successful handball nations of the world. To remind, Croatia is World and Olympic champion and has 13 medals from the big championships. Two World and three European championships were held here and we must not forget Summer Universiade in 1987. and European universities games in 2016. as well as three World universities championship - kayak, bridge and rowing. She finished her speech with the words: Croatia is very active member of student sport and a great example how small country can be a real team. Before the oaths were taken, the attendees were addressed by the Rector of the University of Rijeka prof.dr.sc Snježana Prijić Samaržija, who also opened the championship. In her speech she thanked the organizers, emphasizing the importance of this sporting event, as same as diversity of the nations on this championship coming from 4 continents. Sport is always more than a winning; it s about wisdom of learning to win or lose. It is about loyalty to the team, about breaking the borders, never giving up and remaining humble and strong - always, said the Rector. In the end, contestants and referees took their oaths. On behalf of the contestants the oath was taken by Petra Dičak, Croatian player, while Erdogan Pušat took the oath on behalf of the referees. Opening ceremony was closed with entertainment of the two dancing groups from Rijeka - Group Flame and Parkour. 2
THE MATCHES OF THE FIRST DAY ARE BEHIND US WUC 2018 was opened today with matches played between Romania and Poland in Men's tournament and Croatia and Japan in Women's tournament. All matches are being played in Zamet Sports Hall and first teams that became winners were Japan and Romania. Girls from Japan have easily, with unreachable 14 goals difference, beaten girls from Croatia. On the other hand, with some smaller difference, but still with a big win, Romanians have celebrated against Poland. The match between Romania and Poland has ended with a score 28:20 and between Japan and Croatia 31:17. After the first match in the category A, there was the second one that was layed between athlets from Czech Republic and Brasil. In a very intense game played goal by goal, Brazillian players celebrated with one goal difference. In the same time on the different field, the second game in the category B was being played between Republic of Korea and Chinese Taipei in which Korean men have won with 12 goals difference. The match between Brasil and Czech Republic has ended with the score 29:28 and the match between Republic of Korea and Chinese Taipei has ended with the score 42:30. The first match in category B in female competition was played between Spain and Uruguay. With 29 goals difference Spanish handball players have easily beat their opponents. The match has ended with the score 37:8. One of the most exciting game today was played in the category B between male teams from Czech Republic and Lithuania. From the start, the Czech were keeping one goal difference all the way to the end of the first half. Lithuania has opened the second half with lack of concetration and Czech used that to take the lead. The match has ended with the score 32:35 (14:15). There was one red card in the game for the Czech player. The last games today were played between Romania and Poland in the female category B and between Croatia and Egypt in the male category A. Egyptians opened the match with 3 goals difference and they kept that difference untill the middle of the first half when the Croats started to play faster and, by the end of the first half, they had the score 19:17 on their behalf. In the majority of the second half, Croats had the lead, but they didn't keep it until the end and the match has ended with the score 33:33. In the same time, we have watched equaly interesting game between Polland and Romania. Even though, Polish women had 3 goals difference in the end of first half, the match was exciting and tough all 60 minutes. In the second half, Romanian women have manage to lower the difference and they played goal by goal. At the end, the win is in Romanian hands with the score 28:27. 3
