S o u t h e r n N e v a d a C h a p t e r, I n c. # 2 7 3 5 The Director s Saddle Well June is upon us and it does not seem like it has been 6 months into the year already. Hopefully the next 6 months will go by smoother than the first 6. Now that we have finally changed from the coupon system/scanning, things should go better for everyone. For me, the coupon system was time consuming. Sometimes I would sit at my computer for a few hours making sure everyone was in the scan download and uploaded to the coupon site so it could get the approval of the dealership and added to your accounts. With the new program we will have now, I will only have to upload coupons once a month for approval. That doesn t mean I will not be on my computer doing HOG work though. I will still have quite alot of work to do for the chapter, just cut in half. J U N E, 2 0 1 1 June will bring us some great rides and events starting with a new member ride and bar-b-que on the 4th. Then on the 10th is the Williams over nighter ( 2 nights ). The 14th is our June general membership meeting at RRHD. The 19th is Fathers Day so call or go see your dad. The 23rd brings a meet and eat at Ruby Tuesdays. On the 26th we have a day ride, and I think this one is a mystery ride. You will have to come out and see where we will be going. Then to finish out the month, Speedo has a mid week ride on the 29th. His mid week rides are always a mystery until you get to the leave location and see where you will be going and where you will stop and have lunch. I would like to thank everyone that volunteered for the Nevada State HOG Rally this year. Continued on Page 2 S.N.H.O.G. Director s Saddle...continued The rally turned out to be great and everyone that participated in it seemed to enjoy it. I know it was a lot of work but everything went very good. I have heard a lot of talk about the coroner s tour and the rides. Great job to those that put this rally together. Also a big congratulations to Dennis Crittendon for completing Road Captain Training. Komen Race For The Cure was held Saturday, May 7 in downtown Las Vegas and a group of us Riders decided to take a walk to support the cure for breast cancer. Mario and I met the rest of the SHNOG s at the Harley-Davidson store on 4th and Fremont to participate in the 1 mile fun walk. But before our walk we were treated to breakfast with all the other survivor s and received our bags of goodies from all the vendors. There was an amazing amount of people that participated in all the events. As we walked down Las Vegas Blvd we got to see all the entertainment provided along the way. Mayor Goodman and Paula Francis from Channel 8 News welcomed our group as we passed their stage along the way. There were Cheerleaders and musical entertainment at every turn. What a gorgeous day to walk! As a survivor of breast cancer I truly appreciate all the support I have received from our Chapter Members and from organizations such as Susan G. Komen Foundation. Our team raised over $900.00. Go Team! 75% of all funds raised at this event stays in Southern Nevada. The event was a huge success. Thank you everyone for helping to FIND THE CURE. From a Road Captain... By Larry Preston From my recent trip to New Delhi, India Didn t get to buy it, but it sure looked good. Over the past 2 years I have had the pleasure of being a road captain for our chapter and can only tell you how much more I have learned and enjoyed having this experience. At the start of every ride, the Lead Road Captain goes over the ride for the day, our riding safety tips (2 second interval) reminds everyone to Ride their Ride and then talks about the hand signals we will use for the ride. If you have had the pleasure of flying on any commercial airline in the last 30 years, you are almost numb to the flight attendants safety briefing prior to each flight. I think I can recite this better than most flight attendants, but I still listen just in case. The big difference is you cannot control or even see what may be happening in front of you as a passenger on an airplane. When we are riding our motorcycles, our lives and the lives of our passengers and fellow riders depend on each and every rider paying 100% attention to the ride, the road conditions and the riders around them. This is why we go over the basic safety issues prior to each ride and why we remind everyone about the importance of knowing the groups hand signals. We use 8 basic hand signals with most rides and I want to review them with you: Parade-This is where bikes ride side by side Staggered-The left side bike moves forward and the right side bike moves back slightly Left turn-left arm straight out to the side, open palm with fingers straight out Right turn-left arm bent 90 degrees up, open palm and fingers straight up Single file-all bikes fall behind the Lead Road Captain Slow down-left arm down, palm open, riders slow down or prepare to stop Road hazard-left arm down, finger pointing and arm motioning up and down Hands up (to start each ride) Left arm straight up in a fist You can find these important hand signals in the chapter website www.snhoglv.com On the home page, click on the Road Captains button and then click and download the following 2 files: Run Card Member Reference Guide New Member Reference Orientation I recommend each member to print both guides and keep them on your motorcycle for reference. SAFETY CORNER JUNE 2011 BY PAUL SMITH Paul Smith (SAFETY GUY) Well here it is June 2011 and the hot weather is among us. Remember to keep hydrated and if possible cover up as much as possible so you won t get sun burnt. I received an email requesting that I talk a little about riding, spacing and riding along the Trikes we have in the chapter. I have asked 3 of the chapter trike riders to help me with this since I don t ride the trike in a chapter mode. The trike inventory is around 10 and the riders do a great job as well as everyone else. First, let s talk about the riding formations we normally ride in. Staggered position as well as single file can always be challenging for every bike and rider, depending on your comfort level. That changes with more riding and more confidence. As you know in staggered we say to position 2 seconds behind the bike in front of you and 1 second from the bike in the staggered position. That stays true even for the trikes. Some comments were the 2 wheel bikes ride to close to the trikes and the trike can waiver back and forth on the rides. All I can say is that if you re not comfortable in your position on the ride, then change positions or make yourself comfortable by increasing your spacing. Give each other room whether on 2 wheels or 3. We all want to have a great riding experience. I have ridden Wendy s trike and I noticed it is very stable. 2 examples are going thru a rain and hail storm in Sturgis SD, the trike that was with us just motored thru and we on the 2 wheels had some handling issues. No crashes but sure was fun to hang on to. Coming back from Laughlin this year 2 trikes and 2 two wheels went thru a dust devil and the trikes maintained and my knuckles got very white. I was moved over almost a full lane and I was ready for it. As most of us can remember Laughlin, it was very windy and we all had some handling issues but not once did I hear that from the trike riders. One last comment is that when we ride on 2 lane roads we try to go to single file to give everyone some room to ride. We don t want anyone to ride the shoulder edge because it is unsafe and that s not good for the nerves. If we stay in staggered we just ask for the riders to give a little more space to the trikes because we don t want that rear tire off the edge. That is bad for handling and will throw rocks and debris on the riders following. So bottom line is that we LOVE to ride our Harley-Davidson Motorcycles and enjoy the open road. Give space to all riders and just be courteous to all. Don t over crowd or over space on the rides and be comfortable in your rider s position. Have a great summer and HOT riding season. Remember to stay hydrated and keep that Harley in tip top condition. Paul P A G E 7

LOH Ride.by Nancy DeViese Well Hello My fellow hogs and hoggletts, Another LOH ride has come and gone just like that and I have to say it was a Most Gorgeous Day for a picnic - ride to a very cool and scenic place called Hemenway Park in Boulder City. We had a small turn out but for those that arrived ready to have a great ride, they got what every biker wants Great friends and great conditions and a great adventure. We only get a small window of time for some spring riding and this was a perfect one! Once again, The Road Captains provided Awesome Leadership and a safe ride. We do have some of the best riders in this chapter! Congratulations to all the ladies (Charlotte Sletten, Rosie Diaz, Nicole Marchello, Sharon Derby, Wendy Smith, Clair Larson) these gals were able to enjoy a good time with some light fun and games. Everyone went home a winner with gifts provided by our very own Las Vegas HD dealership. I think it is wonderful treat to have an organization like Las Vegas - Harley Davidson to support us and donate cool prizes for the Ladies. As an added bonus two of our members (Johnnie and Rosie Diaz) stayed under a nice shade tree they got to see the Big Horn Sheep that come down and graze on the grass. That really was a great adventure and sighting for them. I was very happy that they got to see nature up-close like that. Thanks to all the Members that were able to make the ride. June & July Hog Calls Saturday June 4 th : This is a terrific time to have a New Member ride. We want to invite all the new members, mostly new members, not so new members and all the well seasoned members (them s us oldies) to come out and enjoy a short ride and meet your Harley family. We will be meeting at Las Vegas Harley Davidson at Eastern and Sahara at 9:00 AM for a detailed briefing and then we will be off to some destination (surprise) for an opportunity to do a little talking and hand shaking and just a jolly old time. This is the only ride that a lunch is supplied by our Dealership either on the ride or when we return. Friday June 10 th, 11 th & 12 th : I heard the Arizona HOG Rally will be in Williams AZ. What about taking the day off and go check it out? The Arizona HOG Rally is one not to miss. The ride to Williams is always a great ride. Depending on the Road Captains and how hard we snivel and whine we may be able to ride the Mother Road (Route 66). The ride will start at Albertson s in Boulder City, with a leave time of 7:00 AM. You need to plan on being at ABC about 30 minutes early with a full tank of gas to be part of the ride briefing. Hotel Info: Holiday Inn 950 N. Grand Canyon Blvd Williams, AZ 928-635-4114 Tuesday June 14 th : We are going to have our yearly Membership Meeting & Picnic. This event is always a lot of fun. The dealership will furnish the food and guess what, the Dealership employees will be serving the meal. This year the Picnic will be held at the Mountain Crest Park @ West Lone Mountain RD & Durango and will begin @ 6:00 PM. Thursday June 23 rd : For some reason I put on about 3 pounds just writing this column. Anyway, we are going to have, you guessed it, a meet and EAT. We will be doing all the visiting and gabbing at Ruby Tuesday s @ 865 West Craig & MLK @ 6:30 PM Please don t make me be the only one that over indulges and ends up morning and groaning all night. Sunday June 26 th : Not much to say about this ride. It will be announced as soon as we decide where the hell we re going. It will be a day ride though. This will be the start of our summer mystery rides. Wednesday June29th: There is a little more to say about this one, it is the Speedo Mid Week ride and it will be leaving from the Silverton Hotel and Casino, whenever they decide to leave and go to someplace. That sounds like a teenager wrote it. The rides for July are a bit of a surprise at this time. We have the dates selected but because of the weather (insufferable heat) we have not finalized the destinations. I will be sending out the blasts a bit earlier so you have time to plan. Saturday July 2 nd : We have a day ride planned. I bet we are going to do something unique, it will be something that will stick in your memory for a long time to come, it might be a lunch ride. Sunday July 10 th : Our LOH leader wants to schedule another fun filled event. I have no clue what to say about that. If it s anything like around my house, anything I say about what the ladies are thinking I WILL BE WRONG. I have been married long enough to know when to shut up (some times). Tuesday July 12 th : Time for the one and only July General Membership Meeting. Last month I found some cookies to bring and Tex brought some fresh baked cookies that were fantastic. I am not going to do that again, it s embarrassing. I have a different surprise in mind for this month. The meeting is going to be at Las Vegas Harley @ 6:30 PM. P A G E 14

Not much more to say about that one. Sunday July 24 th : We have a new member ride scheduled. It will depart from Red Rock Harley Davidson @ 10:00 AM. I sure hope it s going to go to Mount Charleston. Tuesday July 26 th : This is the day for the Nation of Patriots ride. This is a very special event. The United States Flag honoring our patriots is being ridden coast to coast. It will be arriving at Las Vegas Harley the afternoon of the 25 th. It will be ridden to Antelope Valley Harley Davidson by a select group from Las Vegas. I will have more information on this next month. This ride is open to all that want to participate, just remember it is going to be HOT. Saturday July 30 th : We are gonna take a day ride out to, or around, Pahrump, and of course, GET SOME FOOD!
