This month started out with the Chapter meeting and a short 3 state ride that headed up through the corner of Missouri and into Oklahoma for lunch at Southwest City, and on to Grove for Ice Cream. I will admit the route had a U-turn, yep I know that s a shocker for some to hear, BUT there it is! Now in my defense I have always thought U- turns are ok, but I now have proof via a church marquee that said God allows them. Next we were scheduled to head down to Chapter L for the 25 th annual Toad Suck Rally. I know it was an early start for the ride compared to most of our rides but it wasn t that bad. Connie and I pulled out of the parking lot at 7:15 and headed down 540 to pick up Gary and Sandy. George said he and Dora pulled into the meeting spot around 7:20 found no one there so they headed south and unknowingly, but very appropriately, started a game of leap frog with us. It went like this; we pulled off for a pit stop at a rest area and they passed us, they stopped to eat and we passed them to head on to Toad Suck park. Thanks to Mr. Bud and all of his folks for putting on a good time, as usual, and feeding some good BBQ for those of us able to get down to see them. I did learn that I m not as coordinated as I was a few years ago. (quite a few that is!) OK! I admit it! I enjoyed riding alone over to Harrison for the Convention on Thursday. The sun was warm, the temp was right, the road was curvy, and the music was grooving, so I pushed the trike a little harder than I normally do with Connie on it or with others leading or following me, and to tell the truth I got into a curve a little hotter than CONTINUED ON PAGE 3 MEETING LOCATION! Wings Away June, 2013 Page 3 CONTINUED PAGE 1 FROM I felt comfortable and that brought me back to reality. But like they say; no blood no foul. The district convention seemed more fun to me this year. There was always someone cutting up or cracking jokes to keep each other laughing or maybe just shaking our heads. Thank you, to the entire District staff and chapter volunteers for doing a great job in putting it together and making things run smoothly and let s not forget the vendors for traveling to Arkansas, sponsoring the District Convention, and providing goods and services we can t live without. I am so proud of Gary and Sandy for competing in the District Couple of the Year selection program and while I know they are winners in our book, it would have been nice to see them head on to compete in Region. We know there could only be one winner picked and so let s all congratulate and wish safe travels to Bobby and Arlene Webb while they represent all of Arkansas. Thank you is also in order for Chapter B as a whole and some special folks who put in a little extra work helping with registration, ticket sales, clean-up, etc., showing our willingness to help do whatever is needed whenever we are around. Chapter B really shined in some of the competitions this year; Largest Chapter in attendance (23), 1 st Place Chapter Mascot, 1 st Place Newsletter and with the quality and quantity of items that ended up in our Chapter Basket along with the number of tickets dropped in the box, I d say we had one darn good basket. Once again I say thanks and congratulations to all of the people, who work, donate, support and participate in making our Chapter the fun family that it is. Ride Safe and Laugh Hard!! Page 6 June, 2013 Safe Zone By Gerald Golden, Chapter Educator Wings Away Hello Wingers!! Wendy and I decided we wanted to ride up to Litchfield, IL for the Niehaus Customer Appreciation Days. Niehaus is the oldest Honda Dealer in the U.S. and is located smack-dab on the old Route 66 in Litchfield. Several of the Vendors that Wendy and I have become friends with were scheduled to be there, as well as many manufacture reps. So we were looking forward to a new and fun experience. My trike starting acting a bit weird just this side of St. Louis. I had no idea what was going on as I had never experienced similar symptoms. We arrived late Thursday afternoon and some of the service department staff was still at the Dealership. I described what I had experienced and was told it was probably the clutch going bad. Niehaus was getting ready for their biggest 3 days of the year and was not willing to schedule a major repair. They told me they felt sure the trike would get me home. Well, the clutch gave out about 60 miles West of St. Louis on our way home Sunday. I could not reach anyone listed in the Gold Book so I called GWRRA and they got a wrecker on the way. Loaded my trike and trailer and hauled it in to Rolla, MO. Dumped it at a U-Haul storage facility and locked it up. We spent the night in Rolla, headed home on Monday morning. We stopped in Springfield for lunch, and as we made the short trip from a Taco Bell to the gas station close by, what I thought was smoke rolled out from under the dash on Wendy's trike. After gassing up it started and all seemed ok so we headed for home and made it without incident. Dan and Sandy Slimp loaned me their truck, and Wendy s son and I left out on Tuesday afternoon to pick up a trailer at Horizon Trikes. We made it into the hotel in Rolla at 8:15 that night. Headed home Wednesday morning at 8:30 with trike and trailer loaded up. We got to Horizon around 1:30. By the time we dumped my trailer off and the borrowed truck delivered, I was home around 6:00. Thursday morning I rode Wendy s trike to Heartland Honda to see what had shorted out and discovered it was not a short at all, but a radiator hose running under the dash from one radiator to the other had developed a small hole, so the smoke I saw turned out to be steam. I don't know how we made it home without over-heating. That pretty much covers our trip to Niehaus saga. Thinking how this ties in to riding safe, I come up with a few things. All the water we had was in our Butler Mugs, no ice in the coolers (we have one on each trailer), not extra bottles of water. No kind of safety markers but our flashers. We think of checking everything on our bikes/trikes to be sure all is well and good mechanically, but it s easy to overlook what we need to be safe if we re broke down on the side of the road. Think about it! Ride safe Gerald and Wendy The poorest man leaves his children the richest inheritance. Ruth E. Renkel

Wings Away June, 2013 Page 9 ACD S TRAVELS Ricky & Hazel Dunham Assistant Chapter Directors Man, it seems like I just sent the last newsletter in and it s time for another one. Time sure goes fast. That being said, we hope you have had a great month and got to be involved in some of the things going on. If you missed dropping by the Chapter yard sale, you missed an excellent opportunity to have your hair fixed by some pretty good hair dressers. Just ask Dan about the expert job they can do for the person with the longer, full body head of hair. While you re at it, you can give him a few pointers in the area of car sales, Hazel still has that convertible. If you got to make the AR District Rally, I hear a good time was had by all. Hazel and I made our annual trip to Marengo, IL., outside Rockford, and had a great time. Weather wasn t real good but not terrible either. We left AR in the 80 s, got there and it was cold, cloudy, rainy & 60 degrees. Still managed to take a short ride with the outlaws and have a great visit. Needless to say on the way home, it was still cold, cloudy, rainy and up to 64 degrees but, like magic, when we passed St. Louis the weather changed to sunny and back in the 80 s. Off came the rain gear and extra jackets. All in all, we have had fun and are starting to look forward to our trip in July. Route has been chosen and motel reservations are in the works so, if you want to tag along, part or all, let us know. Us being, Sandy, Gary, Hazel or myself. Notice I didn t tell you where we re going first. Too be continued. Rick & Hazel

Page 10 June, 2013 Wings Away I would like to shout out a very loud THANK YOU, to these folks for helping make the Arkansas District Convention a huge success. There are many, many more; but these folks helped in my area of responsibility. GARY & SANDY LARSON: You guys helped us so much at the registration booth, selling tickets, handing out reg. packets and basically wherever and whenever we needed you. Also, you guys did an outstanding job representing the spirit of Chapter B during the Couple of the Year Selection. BOBBYE BEECHER: Bobbye almost never left my side the entire weekend, working at the registration booth. It was such a pleasure working with you! Thanks so much for your help. BONNIE NAGY: (Chapter C) - Thanks for backing us up at the registration booth, selling tickets, etc. ROBERT & MELISSA GRAVES: (Chapter F Directors) - You guys were life savers! Robert did an awesome job getting all those door prizes out! Thanks for being there to support us and selling those tickets. SAM & BELINDA LISTER: For selling 50/50, Grand Prize & Couples Basket tickets. LARRY & MARTHA STEWART: For helping pack-up and clean-up after the rally. TIM & CYRILEE BILLINGS: For helping pack-up and clean-up after the rally. LARRY FULBRIGHT: For making all of our signs and banners AND keeping us all laughing all weekend long! BOBBY & ARLEEN WEBB: For selling 50/50, Grand Prize & Couples Basket tickets. NOVA BRANDON: For helping with the registration booth and basically anywhere that I needed his help. He kept the vendors Happy, Happy, Happy by feeding them Little Debbie Snack Cakes! ARKANSAS DISTRICT TEAM: The men and women of our District Team did an outstanding job. This was their first year, as a Team, to host a District Convention and they all did an outstanding job. It takes an army to host a rally and our SOLDIERS came forth, teamed-up and we got the job done! I m forever grateful to you all and YES, you can all help me out next year! Love you all. Dan & Sandy Slimp Assistant Chapter Directors Wings Away Page 13 Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Who would have believed we would have snow in May. But that did not stop Chapter B from having our garage sale. We did have a lot of fun. Dan kept trying to sell Hazel s Mustang but no takers even at $25.00. Hazel and Connie Hall got even with Dan they tied him to a chair and rolled his hair in curlers. Then to top it off they put a red hat on him and took his picture, all in great fun. After our Monthly Gathering several of us took off on a ride that took us into Missouri and Oklahoma. I am not sure in which state we were in but we stopped to have lunch at a Mexican Grill. The food was great and the company was even better. We made a quick stop to fill the gas tanks and then off to get some ice cream. Thanks to Connie Brandon for planning such a great ride. On Sunday, which happens to be Mother s Day, several riders gathered for our Sunday Evening Ride. We were not too sure about the weather, was looking like rain. So all agreed to take a short ride to Cracker Barrel at exit 412. Like usual the ladies were on one side of the table and those lucky husbands were seated across from their beautiful wives. The guys had one waiter and we had another. Well according to the guys waiter he was faster at taking orders so needless to say all the guys were served first. Now that just is not right. Ok folks the writing above was written by my lovely bride, just saying. On a personal note I want to say thank you to all our veterans that have served and are serving. For those who haven t served, over the years I am noticing more and more are showing their support. I want to also thank them because without those folks we cannot and would not be the nation we are now. God Bless and Ride Safe June, 2013 DAN S DOODLIN S Dan and Sandy

We had a really nice time. Everyone worked real hard to make the rally a success. Chapter B received several first place awards. The weather was beautiful and the food was good. What more could you ask for? We re getting ready to leave for the Missouri District Rally in Branson. We had a good time last year, so we hope this year will be also. Just wanted to let you know that I got my splint off Tuesday (5/28). But my arm, wrist and thumb are really sore. I still have to wear the splint when I ride the trike. So it s not gone completely. Page 18 June, 2013 Wings Away DISTRICT NEWS Welcome from your District Directors Man does Arkansas know how to have fun or what?!!! We had a great convention because of you and enjoyed seeing so many friends. All Arkansas Chapters were represented during the convention. We hope that everyone found something fun to do. There were 11 Districts present, along with the Region Chapter of the Year OK-X and the Region Couple of the Year Tim & Becky Dinnel. High mileage was 1100 miles-ken Breen from Williamsburg, VA. Largest Chapter-AR-B and the largest District was Arkansas. ARKANSAS ROCKS!!!! We are very proud of our chapter couples. They all do a fantastic job of representing their chapters and Arkansas. We had two great couples in the District Couples Selection; it was a hard decision for the judges to make. Congratulations to Bobby & Arleen Webb from AR-D on becoming the new District Couple of the Year. Thank you Sam & Belinda for all you have done in the last year. The chapter tanks and pride booths looked GREAT!! We had some super looking chapter baskets. The helicopter maneuvers were a lot of fun and very challenging, much harder than you might think. We know you are wondering what we have in store for next year. We are still working on a few issues, but we will let you know very soon. If you are going to Wing Ding please go to the Region H website and sign up for a time to help with the bike show. It takes several people to help with this bike show; you do not have to be a judge. Again, we say Thank You to everyone that attended the Arkansas District Convention and we hope to see you again soon. RIDE OFTEN AND RIDE SAFE!!!!
