We join together to help grow and promote the 4-H program! Spread the word about 4-H tell everyone the things you have learned and experienced through 4-H! Wear your green and the 4-H clover proudly! Be Loud and Be Proud for 4-H! National 4-H Week will be October 4-10! Who says we can only celebrate one week out of the year? Let s celebrate 4-H the whole month of October or better yet how about all year long! Join me during 4-H week and the month of October as we gear up for a fun and exciting 4-H year and show your green 4-H pride! Let s fill the schools with 4-H green by wearing your 4-H shirt on Wednesday, October 14! Come out on Saturday, October 3 to Prairie s Edge Nature Center from 4-6 p.m. and enjoy a game of kickball, volleyball, or bags with your Howard County 4-H family! Bring your friends! Awesome job to everyone who turned in Record Books! Mark your calendars to come celebrate the achievements of Howard County 4-H ers on Sunday, November 8! The event will be held at the Cresco Movie Theater being followed by a private showing of a movie! As we begin planning for events and deadlines, make sure to mark your calendars! COUNTY NEWS National 4-H Week We will once again be celebrating National 4-H Week during the week of October 4 th - 10 th! The theme will be 4-H Grows Here. This is a time for you to show your 4-H pride and dare your friends to discover the endless opportunities 4-H has to offer! Get creative and promote 4-H decorate your car, create posters at school or community businesses, and/or use social media! Show youth across the county, state, and nation the fun and opportunities 4-H can provide! Mark your calendars for a 4-H Family Fun Night on Saturday, October 3 rd at Prairie s Edge Nature Center shelter from 4-6:00 p.m.! Come celebrate the accomplishments of last year and kick off the new 4-H year by playing kickball, bean bag toss, volleyball, and enjoy a light meal! Come as a club, family, or bring your friends to show them the fun that is and can be had in 4-H! If you plan on attending, RSVP to the Extension Office by Wednesday, September 30 th with the number of people attending! Re-enrollment on 4H Online Re-enrollment has begun for the upcoming year! Please go to https://iowa.4honline.com/ to sign-in and complete the process for reenrollment after September 1 st. You have until November 30 th to complete or risk losing the assistance for your annual fee. If you need help enrolling online or would like to apply for membership dues assistance please contact the Extension Office! Leaders if you have new members have them come in or call the Extension Office. Citizenship Year 1 Begins Our focus on state government and citizenship will begin with a kick-off meeting on Sunday, October 18 at 3 p.m. at the Howard County Extension Office. The five-part series will prepare youth as they gear up their studies on the state level and get ready to travel to the State Capital in March. Youth in grades 7-11 th, it is not too late to sign-up! If you are interested in joining the citizenship group, contact the Extension Office at (563)547-3001. Don t miss this great opportunity! Recruitment Pizza Party It is once again the time of year to work on new 4-H recruits for the coming 4-H year! Let s share the Howard County 4-H program with others! If you know friends or families in your area, personally invite them to your next meeting. Howard County 4-H Clubs will be competing for the most new members enrolling in their club by November 30 th. The club that recruits the most will receive a pizza party! Remind your friends they don t have to live on a farm to enjoy 4-H! Recruit all ages! 4-H Awards Program Come join us on Sunday, November 8 at the Cresco Movie Theater at 1:30 p.m. as we honor 4-H members, volunteers, and supporters on their many accomplishments this past year! After the awards program, kick back with some popcorn & pop and enjoy a private movie showing! MISSION STATEMENT 4-H EMPOWERS YOUTH TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL WORKING

COUNTY NEWS SAVE THE DATES Important event dates have been set for the upcoming 4-H year! Mark your calendars early so you can plan to participate. We realize everyone has busy schedules so it is important to plan early! Watch your mail and online for more important dates for 2015-2016! SPRING FAIR When: Saturday, April 16 Where: NICC Cresco Center HOWARD COUNTY FAIR When: June 22-26 Where: Howard County Fairgrounds LIVESTOCK INFO Beef Weigh-In Attention 4-H and FFA beef exhibitors mark your calendars for the beef weigh-in going to be held on Saturday, January 2 nd at the Cresco Sale Barn from 9-11 a.m. If you know you cannot attend, please let the Extension Office know ASAP, so we can help you make other arrangements! Thank You Notes Please remember if you received a trophy, plaque, or participated in the Ribbon Auction, to send a thank you to your sponsors or buyers if you have not already done so! CLOVER KIDS Clover Kids on the Horizon The Howard County Clover Kids program will be beginning in November! A brochure was sent out through the school. We have a bunch of fun and exciting topics we will be learning about this year from aerospace to art! We will have three locations for the program this year. The locations are the following: RICEVILLE Date: 2 nd Monday of the month Location: Riceville school lunchroom ELMA Date: 1 st Saturday of the month Location: St. Paul s Maple Leaf Church Time: 9:15 11:15 a.m. Looking to sign-up and did not receive a brochure contact the Extension Office. Registrations are due Friday, October 16. CRESCO Time: 3:15 5:15 p.m. Date: 1 st Tuesday of the month (except November will be 1 st Monday) Location: Notre Dame Church Basement Time: 3:30 5:30 p.m. 4-H IS BASED ON RESEARCH

LEADER S CORNER Thank You Thank you to all who attended the fall meeting on Monday, September 21! There was a lot of great discussion and ideas! WHAT S DUE? Club program books and financial reports are due Friday, October 2. National 4-H Week Theme In Howard County, we will be using 4-H Grows Here as the theme for National 4-H Week! Encourage your clubs to do something over National 4-H Week to promote 4-H and recruit new members :) Enrollments & Enrollment Fees Please continue to encourage your youth to reenroll in 4hOnline. The deadline to receive financial assistance is December 1. The enrollment fees have been subsidized by the Extension Council, Youth Committee, and Alumni Committee so the youth is only responsible for $7.00. Please continue to recruit! Schwan s Fundraiser Again this year, we have decided to continue with the Schwan s Fundraiser! The opening date will be November 16 and the closing date is TBD, but most likely towards the end of December. You will receive a follow e-mail with more information soon! New Volunteer Training For those volunteers, that are new within the last 3 years offered this year are new volunteer trainings. There will be 19 locations and dates spread throughout the state between October and March. All new volunteers need to attend the training once. Registration is now open at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/ volunteertraining. Closet location is at NICC Dairy Center in Calmar on January 9! COUNTY COUNCIL Remember to arrive at 3:30 p.m. to help setup for the Family Fun Night on Saturday, October 3! Bring a friend! NEXT MEETING Mark your calendars our next meeting will be Saturday, October 24 th at 6pm at Erica s house! We will be having a meeting and then Haunted Housing! Wear a costume! We will be discussing leadership projects, awards program, and county event dates! Things to remember to bring to meeting: Date for Jr/Int Fun Night Finalized leadership project (if you are doing this year) & potential adult mentor Calendars Costume & Money for Haunted House ($10) BEYOND THE COUNTY Free Tire for Farm Equipment Restoration Thinking about restoring a tractor or other farm equipment? Titan Tires has an opportunity for you to submit an application to receive free Titan Tires for your restoration project. The application can be found at http:// www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/projects/mechanics in the green 4-H Resources box. Application requires signatures from 4-H member, parent/ guardian and county extension staff. Also, a before photo and an in progress photo of the equipment is required! BEYOND THE COUNTY Capture the Heart of America Photo Contest Livestock Judging Contest Do you like capturing photos of agriculture? The Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) is hosting their annual photo contest. Photos may be taken anywhere in the United States, except for one category dedicated to SSNHA Partner Sites. Entry limit of 5 photos per contestant and an entry fee of $5/photo. Entries are due by October 28, 2015. For online entry form and complete contest rules/guidelines, visit http:// www.silosandsmokestacks.org/get-involved/ photo-contest. Calendar OCTOBER 2015 NOVEMBER 2015 A 4-H/FFA Livestock Judging Contest is being held by the Linn-Mar FFA & Kirkwood Community College! Youth in grades 4 th -10 th are eligible to compete! The contest will be held Tuesday, October 6 beginning at 5 p.m. at the Tippie Beef Education Center on the south side of Kirkwood Community College Cedar Rapids campus! Entry fees are $10 per team or $4 per individual. Tentative classes will be 3 class of beef, 3 classes of swine, 2 classes of sheep and/or goats, and identification of animal parts class or knowledge test.
