The Official Publica on of South Shore Yacht Club AUGUST 2015 Commodore's Comments by Paul Bahan July saw our first-ever Duffy Reciprocity Cruise - and it was worth waiting for! BCYC was good to their pledge of holding dock space for us and came through with great appetizers and strong drinks. BYC was unable to accommodate us due to hosting a sizable race. So we tootled our 2 Duffys off to he Balboa Bay Club where we surprised them with 19 hungry members-wholunch. They were up to the task. And given how nice a day on the bay it was, we pressed on to that Newport Beach iconic bar on the bay - Woody's Wharf. It is always nice to drop in on brain cells we've all left behind over the years. But I fear I'm stepping on Joe's toes - so let me leave this topic with another way to go Joe, Commodore that is; another successful cruising event. Thanks. Work kept me from our July dinner, but I'm told it was a ton of fun. And our first-ever no-host Last Friday at the Bar made for two innovations in one month! Thanks Juli and Tina and everyone who makes these things go. Very cool. We've made real progress adding stand-up paddleboards to our retinue; the by-laws revisions progress; and several prospective members delivered applications. So what's not to like about July 2015? Losing the Dorn's to Florida; that's what! But they'll be with us in spirit and will undoubtedly visit from time to time. Besides, we've now a Clearwater stop-over in hand! IMPORTANT NOTES: NBYC has asked that we take extra care to make sure that all their glassware is returned promptly to the upstairs bar. We will be cruising to Catalina again this month. Due to changes in the Harbor Department and policies regarding the anchorages, the Great American Raft Up will not be happening this year.. PJBahan - Commodore Vice Commodore by Tina Simmons August starts off the month with Sad News, but Good News! Our lovely and fun Rear Commodore, Linda Dorn, has resigned and moved to Clearwater, Florida with her husband Gene. They are looking so forward to enjoying their new home on the water with their very own boat dock and they may even buy a boat! The Dorns were the first members I met when I joined and they will be missed by everyone. So now the Good News is that our very own Board Member, Sarah Commodore has been chosen as our new Rear Commodore! We have given her the list of responsibilities, and there is quite a list. She ll serve as third in command, presides in the absence of the Commodore and Vice Commodore, helping Juli King with some of the Social Activities, updating the Bylaws and.still coordinating activities with the Cruise Director, her husband, Joe Commodore. We waited to inform her of these responsibilities until after she said yes and there is just too much more to mention. More Good News is that Brenda Jenkins will be replacing Sarah Commodore s position. She also will have more than just one thing to do! Jerry and Brenda Jenkins have been SSYC members for many years now and are very active in the club activities. With Brenda being as busy as she is with work and travel, we appreciate her stepping up to the plate to keep us all in line! And a thanks to Jerry for letting us borrow her! So, A Very Big Welcome for Sarah Commodore and Brenda Jenkins as we are very fortunate to have them on our Team! We have a lot of new members and existing who are all joining together to make SSYC the great club that it is. If you enjoy sailing, racing, cruising, paddle boarding and all of the other social functions that SSYC has to offer, you could not have picked a better club to join. The large numbers attending the club social functions are all signs of a growing and thriving club. Summer is not over and there are many more activities ahead in 2015. It s your club, get involved and have a great time! See you on the water. Tina Simmons -Vice-Commodore The Sheets
Social by Juli King I hope everyone is enjoying our summer activities and this amazing California weather. I know I am! It always seems like the clock turns faster this time of year, but have no fear, we will extend this summer fun and keep the party and activities rolling! In July, we managed to extend America s favorite holiday, Independence Day, with our very own Star Spangled Banner party. A virtual parade of red, white and blue SSYC members joined us for this patriotic evening. Many new members were in attendance and several new members were introduced at this event, signaling a bright and colorful future for SSYC. Our next Second Friday Dinner quickly approaches. Join us for cocktails at 6pm and Dinner 7pm August 14 th. Come dressed as your favorite Gilligan s Island castaway. Remember to brush up on Gilligan s Island and the stars trivia and don t forget to bring a raffle gift. This is sure to be a fun night that you won t want to miss so RSVP today for this 3 hour tour. Our first SSYC monthly happy hour held on Friday July 31 st was a huge success with over 25 revelers coming and going. It was a great opportunity to say farewell to Gene and Linda Dorn. Our next SSYC monthly happy hour, Thirsty Thursday will be held in the upstairs bar area on Thursday August 27 th, from 6pm till whenever. This is a casual, non-hosted, no RSVP, no costume required event. So just swing in to say hi at your leisure or stick around for some cocktails. (thanks to Shell, for the name) Stay tuned for additional September events: Endless Summer Beach Party (coming soon) Second Friday Dinner - Football Theme (this event is on Sept 11, so be prepared to honor the fallen) The Sheets 2
Cruising by Joe Commodore Ahoy South Shore Yacht Club Cruisers and wanna-be cruisers! Our July Reciprocity Cruise the first of its kind for SSYC was a smashing success! There was so much interest in participating that for the first time in Club history, we had to turn members away! Due to the excitement of visiting the reciprocal clubs in our own backyard, we were forced to rent two Duffys to transport the lucky members. Our first stop, Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club. Even though it is only located about 500 yards from our Club, few if any members had visited this very well established club. As we approached the guest dock and tied up, the excitement began building! We had left our Club just moments ago with 14 members but before we would depart, our group would grow by an additional 5 members! After signing in at the front desk, we met up in the lounge for drinks and appetizers to share. After whetting our appetites, enjoying the comradery and atmosphere, we pushed on to our next port of call, the infamous Balboa Bay Club host to such luminaries as John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Jerry Seinfeld and many more! As Paul alluded to in his article, the Bay Club staff met us with smiles, an affinity to make our stay memorable and a willingness to quench the thirsts and appetites of the motley crew that had just descended upon them! The service and food was superb and as expected! Several members left our table and flocked to the outdoor/poolside/bayside bar to partake in just one more for the road! Once we departed the BBC, we made our way to that infamous hole on the bay, Woodies Wharf to continue the merriment! After more drink and food really? Who actually had room for more??? Anyway, the afternoon light was starting to fade, so the reluctant members once again boarded our rented Duffys to make the return trip to our clubhouse. Revelers disembarked and the Duffys were returned to Windward Sailing. But did the party end? Of course not! Several members continued the party out on the patio until NBYC finally shouted out last call! Stand by for a repeat on some future date!! Our August cruise will see us return to Catalina Emerald Bay and Two Harbors to be specific, where we are anticipating a Beach Blanket Bingo Party!! You don t want to miss that!! The dates for August will be the weekend of the 20 th thru the 24 th. Dig out your best Frankie and Annette costumes and get ready to shimmy and shake! Our cruise in September will be led by the one, the only Commodore himself, Paul Bahan! This is planned to be a trip to Descanso Bay and Avalon. Make your reservations now!! To make mooring reservations online for Two Harbors or other west-end coves, check out this link: http://www.visitcatalinaisland.com/camping-boating/twoharbors-boating/mooring-fees For you boat-less members, if you d like to join the trip, boats can be rented or chartered from the following vendors: Marina Sailing: 949-548-8900 (bareboat or captained charters) Newport Beach Sailing: 800-609-3203 (captained charters), mention that you are a member of SSYC and receive a 10% discount on your charter. Windward Sailing: 949-675-0827 (bareboat charters) Those members without boats but desiring to participate in the festivities either in Avalon or Two Harbors can catch a ride to the island via Catalina Express (Avalon and Two Harbors) or the Catalina Flyer (Avalon only). There are plenty of hotels and B & B s in Avalon and a very limited number of rooms in Two Harbors. You could even choose to camp at Two Harbors. If you are interested in staying at Banning House, I ve included the website link below: http://www.visitcatalinaisland.com/hotels-packages/two-harbors/ banning-house-lodge Looking forward to seeing you on one or more of our adventures! Racing by Matt Steele It s been a busy mouth of racing with the Crew of 2 and the ongoing Summer Hibachi Series. We would like to send out a special thanks to all the race committee volunteers and folks that donate their boats and time to allow this to happen. Without you guys we could not do this. I would say the Superstar s for the Crew of 2 were John Marshall and Crew of 2 Finish Line Committee volunteers who took shifts throughout the night and the following morning. John Marshall took the bull by the horns and organized another great race! The Solo Superstar for the Hibachi Series is Commodore Bahan for donating his boat and time for the first eight Hibachi races! This year s Crew of 2 offered three race starts; Around Catalina, Around Ship Rock and the Double Dash. The Around Catalina and Ship Rock are self-explanatory but the Double Dash was a little different, this race sent racers around the Long Beach offshore oil islands, Emmy and Eva. The winner for the Around Ship Rock was Seth Hall on Marisol with a corrected time of 10:02:03 hours (10:43:00 Elapsed time). The winner of the Double Dash was Jeff Burch on Hot Ticket with a corrected time of 02:38:22 (02:54:06). (That s right! Long Beach and back in less than 3 hours. I can t even power there and back in three hours!) Due to light wind conditions zero boats finished the 90 nautical mile Around Catalina Course. The July Hibachi Series was another great month of racing! We re up to nine boats entered in race. The interesting thing is this year we have skippers swapping boats, taking turns at the helm fine-tuning their skills and rigging. The July Winners were the Newport Sea Base Olson 30, J Bird, skippered by Tom Hartman for the A Class; Our very own Mike Inmon on the notorious Macgregor 28, Sleeping Beauty. We have two months of racing to go and if you haven t been involved it s not too late! Whether you want to crew or join us on the Race Committee, there s a spot for you. Can t make the 6PM race? Come join us for our epic after race parties where we ve had as many as 25 people join us for fun and camaraderie. Next up is the inaugural South Shore Sunday Sailing Series. Many boats have already entered the race and it s shaping up to be a hit! First race is Sunday, August 9 th. The race format is much like the Sunkist series which has been around for years and very popular. The racers start is inside the harbor then racers head outside before returning inside to the finish line. Great race to practice your spinnaker flying skills! If you or you know someone who would be interested in this race, which is shaping up to be a great one, visit our website www.southshoreyc.com for more information. The Sheets 6
