TROY HIGH SCHOOL WARRIOR WEEKLY January 26, 2018 It has been a busy first three weeks of our spring semester, and the fun continues today and through the weekend. At Troy, I don t think we know any other way! To keep up with the numerous events and important dates, please check out our website! https://www.fjuhsd.org/domain/13 Do not let the final deadline for Open Enrollment pass if interested! Open Enrollment is only for students living within district boundaries for the 2018-19 school year. All Open Enrollment paperwork must be completed and turned in by today January 26, 2018 at 3:00pm. This is the last weekend and opportunity for incoming 8 th graders to Troy High School to take the Troy Tech / Honors Test. We have already held two of three testing dates, and the last one is on Saturday. Prospective 8 th graders, this is your last chance! The next testing date is tomorrow morning, January 20, 2018. Plan on arriving at the North Gym around 7:00am and students will be testing until approximately noon. Troy s Open House was last night and despite it being a little cool in the Quad for the various musical, singing, dancing, and cheerleading performances, the crowds of families made for a nice evening. Thank you to all the teachers, counselors, classified, administration, and

parent PTSA / TSO volunteers that also helped make the event nice for everyone. It is always fun to showcase the many great things we are doing as a school community. It is also important to be able to just check in with our teachers and see some specifics that our students work upon in their classes. Seeing how they have been using their 1:1 Chromebooks to access the curriculum and take advantage of all the new electronic resources was also fun! World Language teachers, Ms. Johnson, Ms. Breault, Mr. Fritz, and Ms. Romero. Warriors, our next Red Cross Blood Drive is Monday, January 29 th from 7:30am until 12:30pm! Any student over the age of sixteen with parent permission and seventeen without parent permission, are eligible to donate along with interested parents and staff members! Let s beat our total number of donated units from the last Blood Drive! Troy football coach, Mike Echaves passed on information regarding Troy senior, Cole Thomas. On Monday he played in the Blue-Grey All American Football game in Dallas Texas! I also spoke with his father, Mr. Mike Thomas, aka Troy s Visual and Performing Arts Department Chair, about how Cole played in the game and apparently Cole was impressive with some big yardage gains off pass receptions. It will be interesting to see where Cole is playing football next year as a college / university freshman. Congratulations and good luck, Cole!

Beginning next week our Troy Theatre Ensemble presents the Neil Simon play, Rumors. This event will have a run over two weeks, but I would not wait. This is going to be a popular theatre performance and I think these could easily become sellouts. Get your tickets now! Monday evening we held our Troy Tech Information night in the North Gym. Troy Tech Coordinator, Ms. Laurie Downum stated that about 300 people attended the event. All the attendees were treated to information about Troy and Troy Tech from some of our best and brightest students. All of our students were very well spoken and had some great stories regarding being a part of Troy Tech. Ms. Downum had previously thanked all of our students and I would like to also do the same. Ahmed Abdalla, Sonali Chugani, Jared Flroes, Jojo Liang, Sharleen Loh, Steven Lim, and Zina Patel, all did a fantastic job using their personalized experiences to accurately represent Troy High School. Thank you for a job well done! Last weekend our cyber defense teams had an outstanding round of competition in CyberPatriot! Coach, Mr. Allen Stubblefield reported that our Open teams are in good shape and it looks like ten of our nineteen platinum level teams should advance to the semi-finals, and one gold tier team will advance. For our NJROTC cyber teams, the top three teams advance to nationals after the February round and right now our teams are nationally ranked at 1 st, 2 nd, 4 th, 7 th, 8 th, and 9 th! We are in good shape. Lastly, our partnership with Beechwood and Ladera Vista is really working for these middle school students! For Beechwood, four of five teams look like they will make the semi-finals next month. The Ladera Vista team is on fire with all five of their five teams likely advancing to the national semi-finals! This next competition will be huge for them as they are in great shape to set themselves up for a national championship!

Congratulations to all the Troy students that have been nominated for the OC Artists of the Year Award! In Drawing and Painting, students Angela Wang, Iris Kang, Eunice Chun, Esther Kang, and Shari Qiaoer Wei are the nominees. In Film/Animation Directing, Alyssa Goh and in Film / Animation Editing, Sonali Chugani are the student nominees. Lastly, In Theatrical Design, student Sonham Patel is the nominee. Again, congratulations and good luck! We have a great Girls Basketball team, coaches, fans, and parents. The twenty-six year win streak for Troy was broken by Sonora on Tuesday night. What does this mean? We get to start a new win streak. Even the greatest teams and organizations lose games and then they pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and learn from their losses. If great teams never lost, the Yankees, Lakers, Penguins, and Patriots would win every game and every championship. (In the case of the Patriots this may remain true from here on out ) Tonight we play Buena Park and we still have a great Girls Basketball team, coaches, fans, and parents. Go Warriors! It might be a tough night to be a Coyote. Yesterday our NJROTC had their 3 rd quarter Change of Command ceremony. At the beginning of lunch the outgoing command seen at the front of the picture in officer s uniforms were relieved of command and assumed command for the current term. Upon the conclusion of the very formal ceremony, all cadets retreated to the NJROTC squad bay and celebrated by

eating cake. Who said the Navy does not know how to party? Congratulation to our new student leadership command! National Honor Society adviser, Ms. Kasey Grant reported that last Saturday, forty-five members of the NHS club participated in the 5K Warrior run. This event helps raise money for families in need of financial assistance during cancer treatments. This is a very good cause and our NHS members helped set up the course in Yorba Linda Regional Park and then were cheerleaders for the runners! Thank you to all the participating members for being a part of giving back to our community and helping support this very good cause! Most Troy staff members have had the opportunity to meet our new counselor, Ms. Sonia Diaz. She has a wealth of experience both within Fullerton Joint Union High School District and also from her time as a counselor in Northern California. Ms. Diaz replaced Ms. Cindy Osborne and assumed her student caseload upon Ms. Obsorne s retirement in December. It has only been

three weeks, but already Ms. Diaz is fitting right in, and without losing a step has picked up right where Ms. Osborne left off! Thank you for joining the Troy High School family! Last weekend our Troy Science Olympiad defending National Champions finished 1 st and 8 th place at the 2018 MIT Science Olympiad Invitational! Our 1 st place team that won the competition finished 85 points ahead of the 2 nd place team. This is a very good team and they are continuing to hone their performance as we continue down the road to the national championship! The following list contains some of the contested events in which our team won medals during this competition: Herpetology, Thermodynamic, Astronomy, Forensics, Anatomy, Helicopters, Chemistry Lab, Ecology, Rocks & Minerals, and Remote Sensing. Congratulations Warriors and we look forward to the next competition! Next week on February 1, 2018 our new Troy High School E-Sports team will compete in their first League of Legends match against La Quinta High School! The league has been formed by the Orange County Office of Education and provides the framework for this new form of competition. This will be a super exciting event and I look forward to reporting how our very first Troy E-Sport team performed in their very first competition! It is going to be a fantastic weekend! It is my understanding that by Sunday it is going to feel much more like spring and by Monday it is going to be 90+ degrees. Yikes. I am not ready for summer yet. Have a wonderful weekend and take advantage of the weather! I will see everyone back here bright and early on Monday morning! W.V. Mynster
