THIS WEEK The University of Hawai i men s volleyball team concludes its season-opening homestand with a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches against UC San Diego, Friday, Jan. 24 and Sunday, Jan. 25 at the Stan Sheriff Center. Friday s match begins at 7:00 p.m. while Sunday s match is slated for 5:00 p.m. The 10th-ranked Rainbow Warriors (3-2, 1-1 MPSF) enter the series following a split of then-fourth-ranked Long Beach State last week in Honolulu. Junior opposite Brook Sedore led Hawai i by averaging 5.00 kills per set in the series, including a season-high 24 kills and 11 digs in the UH s five-set victory. UCSD (0-5, 0-4) has dropped four of its five matches in straight sets, including last Saturday s home opener to Brigham Young. The Tritons nearly won at Cal Baptist, holding three match points before succumbing 20-18 in the fifth. Opposite Johl Awerkamp leads the team with a 2.71 kill average. UH s 45 all-time wins over UCSD is the most against an opponent in school history. SERIES VS. UC SAN DIEGO: UH leads the overall series 45-4. UH swept the series last season winning the first night in four and the rematch in five. Prior to last season, the teams split the series in 2011 and 12. UH had won the first 39 matches in the series before the Tritons swept a two-match series in La Jolla, Calif., in 2009. RECAPPING LAST WEEK S LONG BEACH STATE SERIES: The Rainbow Warriors split a twomatch series with Long Beach State, falling in three in the opener and rallying to win in five in the rematch. Brook Sedore led the way with match-highs of 16 kills in the straight set loss and 24 kills in the win. The Grande Praire, Alberta native also posted 11 digs in the rematch for his second career double-double. In the opener, the Beach dominated the match, hitting.363 as a team while totaling 12.5 team blocks. UH rebounded the following night, taking the first set before dropping the next two. The Grande Prairie, Alberta native notched match-highs of 16 kills in a three-set loss and 24 kills in a fiveset victory. He also recorded his second career double-double with 11 digs in the rematch and averaged 5.00 kills per set on.337 hitting during the series. Sedore is averaging 4.07 kills, 1.33 digs, while hitting at a.299 clip and has eight service aces. During the season-opening Outrigger Invitational, Sedore was benched during the team s matches against Penn State and UCLA. Last season, he averaged a team-best 2.96 kills per set and tallied 45 aces. BACKROW PHENOM: Sophomore Kolby Kanetake has not only secured the starting libero position, he is proving to be one of the best in the conference. In five matches this season, the Honolulu native has three double-figure dig contests, including a career-best 15 in UH s five-set win over Long Beach State. Kanetake is averaging 2.63 digs per set, good for sixth in the MPSF. During last week s LBSU series, he averaged 3.25 digs per set. FRESHMEN TO THE RESCUE: Freshman outside hitter Kupono Fey and freshman setter Jennings Franciskovic have played vital roles for the Rainbow Warriors this season. Fey has sparked the team off the bench during last week s series against Long Beach State. The Punahou School product tallied 13 kills in six sets (2.17 kps) on.296 hitting with eight digs, two blocks, and one ace. He had six kills on.364 hitting and five digs in UH s five-set victory in which he entered the match in the third set. Fey posted seven kills, three digs, two blocks, and one ace in the loss. The 6-foot-5 Franciskovic has been a blocking replacement for starting setter Joby Ramos and has seen action in all five matches with his most productive outing in the straight-set loss to LBSU in which he tallied 13 assists and three blocks. SETTING TO PERFECTION: With second-year starting setter Joby Ramos at the controls, the Rainbow Warrior offense has been much more balanced this season. As a team, UH has hit.350 or better twice in five matches. Hawai i opened the season with a.360 hitting percentage against Ohio State and followed that with a.350 clip against Penn State. Ramos is averaging 10.33 assists per set while five players averaging 1.68 kills per set or better. INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR: The Rainbow Warrior roster features players from six different countries and three U.S. states. Among the five international players include Sinisa Zarkovic of Belgrade, Serbia; Iain McKellar of Macclesfield, England; Hendrik Mol of Sand Norway; Johann Timmer from Auckland, New Zealand; and Brook Sedore from Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada. Both Zarkovic and Sedore were regular starters last season while Timmer saw extensive action as a serving specialist. Among the Americans, nine are from California, five from Hawai i, and one from New York. VETERAN EUROPEAN COACH JOINS STAFF: Milan Zarkovic, the father of sophomore outside hitter Sinisa Zarkovic, joined the coaching staff as an assistant coach. Zarkovic has more than a decade of national team coaching experience, most recently as head coach of Belarus Senior National Team from 2011-12. He was also head coach of the Serbian Junior National Team (formerly Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro) from 2001-13, leading the team to a bronze medal at the European Junior Championships in 2010 and a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships in 2011. UH PICKED 9TH IN PRESEASON MPSF: UH was picked ninth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Preseason Coaches Poll. The Warriors finished ninth in the final league standings a year ago. BYU and Long Beach State were tied atop the poll followed by defending national champion UC Irvine, who ironically was No. 1 in the preseason AVCA Poll. HOME SWEET HOME: Hawai i has an all-time record of 225-116 (.659) overall and 139-62 (.692) in MPSF play in the Stan Sheriff Center. HEAD COACH CHARLIE WADE 5th season Alma Mater: CS Fullerton, 1991 In four seasons as head coach of the University of Hawai i, Charlie Wade has led the Rainbow Warriors to three appearances in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament, including last year s quarterfinal loss to top-seeded Brigham Young in Provo. After rebounding from a disappointing 7-20 season in 2012, Wade guided the Warriors back to the postseason and not for a controversial call at match point in the fifth set against the Cougars in that quarterfinal match, UH may have pulled off the most improbable upset in tournament history. Under Wade s guidance, the Warriors have made a return to the national title scene. UH returns five starters and 10 lettermen from last year s squad and are poised to advance further in the postseason. During his tenure, Wade has emphasized recruiting and bringing top talent to the islands, even if it means several oceans away. Two-time All-American Jonas Umlauft of Germany led the nation in kills during Wade s first two seasons. UH s roster also features players from Germany, Serbia, Canada, Norway, England and New Zealand. Wade has also lured several of the state s top recruits, including Punahou s Kupono Fey from last year s class and Moanalua High s Kolby Kanetake last year. In 2011, Wade guided the Warriors to their second straight Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament appearance and finished fifth in the final league standings. Prior to Wade s arrival, UH had missed postseason play the previous two seasons and suffered through three straight losing seasons. In his inaugural year as coach, Wade led the Warriors to a 19-10 mark and a trip to the MPSF Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2003. UH doubled its win total from the previous year and snapped a two-year postseason drought.
