April 2009 THE STARTING LINE Official Monthly Publication of Cowtown Mopars HELP WANTED Apply within Mopars At The Motorplex 2009 April 18th is fast approaching. By now everyone who has read any club newsletter in the last four months knows about it. Thanks to the hard work of a dozen or so club members, it looks like this will be a great event. But it doesn t end at planning. The event will require some manpower to make it all come together the day of. Gates open at 8am, and we need to be at least set up to take registrations and park vehicles. The tents, tables and class layouts need to be set up prior to the gate opening. People will also be needed to help park vendors, racers and sponsors. Back at the show area, people will be needed to help run registration, sell 50/50 tickets and T-shirts, and we will be needing at least 12 judges to help things go smoothly. All of these things can t happen with club support. Whether you plan to come early, or to show up after the gates open.if you want to help out at least for a little while, let us know ahead of time so we can plan. The more people that volunteer, the less any one person will have to do...and we all want to have time to enjoy the event. Contact Mike Miller, Mark Buchanan, Kirk Maisenbacher, Dave Mandato or Ken Key if you are planning to help out. Also, the video from last year was pretty popular. This year, in addition to pictures and trackside video, I would like to get some in-car track footage. I have a camcorder mount that works very well, and I would like to move it from car to car through the day to get some in-car video that can be used in this years DVD video. Let me know in interested so I can get with you the day of the event. Kirk Maisenbacher Newsletter Guru
April has arrived and it is time to hand over the reigns to the club after the Mopars at the Motorplex. It has been a great year for me and I have enjoyed every minute of it. We have had some good times and some new activities this year and I hope the Club has enjoyed the year. It has also brought us a Sponsorship change and I hope that our new relationship with Allen Samuels will be a long one. I hate to have had to step down this year but if I can t be sure that I can give 100% it isn t fair to the Club. I know Kevin will fill my shoes well and help the Club grow and take us down some new roads. I want to thank everyone that attended the Car Show at Allen Samuels. It was an incredible event and the turnout from Cowtown Mopars was better than expected by all. I hoped for a good turnout and once again, Cowtown did not let me down. There were a lot of nice cars, both Old School and New School. Our Dealership show will be held there on September 27 th so mark that on your calendar and lets show them what one of our shows are. We were challenged at the Ronald McDonald House Promotion by the Dallas Mopar Club to see which club could collect the most money for the Charity between now and our September Show. Let s come up with some ways to help collect money for this cause. Win or lose, the Ronald McDonald House will be the big winner. My thanks go out to last years Board and all the members that stepped forward and helped through the year. Everyone s help makes the job a lot easier to do. I am going to miss leading the group, but believe me I am not going anywhere. I am going to do my best to participate in all the events. Thanks for a great year. April 2009 Car Of The Month Art Crump s 1966 Barracuda The car as it is today is the combination of two cars acquired by my dad in 1972. His intent was not to build a show car but to provide a second family vehicle. Chosen for its body style, he began work on putting the better of the two cars together to make one car. Best parts included an original 273 engine, power steering, power brakes and air conditioning. Very soon after that premium gas became unavailable. Thus, its current 318 engine was installed. Three paint jobs later, it s now Plymouth Arrow blue. About this time, my mom passed away and most of the interest in the car was lost. Years passed, the car sat and I finally inherited the car. The first job was exhuming a long dead rat s skeleton, so I guess you could say the Barracuda was at one time a rat rod. Dad and I worked to get the car legal and moved it to my house. The ultimate goal is a total restoration, but for now, it s a work in progress. I love it and have plans to show ad enjoy it. The first trophy went to my dad and in my heart, it will always be our car!
