Next project design will be chosen by March 1, 2017. First contest no sooner than 2018. This is enough lead time for the kit designers and builders to be ready. C) ALOT: Copeland SAM does not understand and does not know what is going on. Most pilots don t seem to under stand it. Most people already have suitable models. We need two managers on site and have plenty of information avail able. Brian Sargent suggested we use ALES soaring stuff that is readily available rather than SAM specific hardware ALOT is one of the most popular events at the Euro Champs. Lescher also brought up the subject of not knowing how to go about the electric motor stuff. No experience in this area! A broad discussion was held about getting help and that this is one of the foremost benefits of belonging to a club. Alan Peterson also felt passionately about this subject and as a result was rewarded with the title Class Instructor Organizer. From The June Meeting Notes From The Right Seat Greetings: I was extremely pleased that the proposed Boxcar/San Jose event at the Flying Electrons Field, scheduled for September, 24 was approved at the July meeting. Last year this (now annual?) event had very good attendance and this year a competition combining the two models should prove even more fun. There is some thought being given to including the Simplex to make it an all build and fly project event. In addition, there was consensus approval of the proposed relaxed project building schedule. The first steps have already been taken to test the practicability of the Committee approach to the choice of the next project model and scheduling of the first contest to test the new build. Above: The rich and famous Dr. Joe Poco is either showing off his new headphones or he has finally stumbled onto the proper sized wheels for his Boxcar... Above: Brian Chan demonstrates his newest toy, which he explained is a mini camera on a stick. Claims it is useful for closely inspecting your lost parts, or your mistakes. Says it is also handy for looking in places where your head won t fit. Henry Smith, left, seems to be wondering where Brian is going to point it next and is preparing to scoot back in case the stick gets aimed at him or explodes Actually the mini cam has many useful features (I assume you can tell which one is Brian and which one is Henry) In the meantime, while all the politics are being exercised, based on the success of the Clash of the Titans event, I suggest we start right away to make further use of the project models by discussing the possibility of scheduling as many as two similar events in 2017 - perhaps one at the Schmidt Ranch and the second in Livermore. Question: How about a nod to the far North enthusiasts by getting approval to locate one of those events at Woodland/Davis? I was pleased to receive a reply to my rant in this column last month from SAM President, Allen Heinrich, who assures that several of the suggestions made in the column are either being implemented or studied. Of major interest includes the publication of SAM Speaks quarterly electronically, as we do with the Clipper, which will save a very large sum of money presently spent on printing and mailing. Allan also has taken up the matter of requiring a report in each issue from each of the district Vice Presidents on activities of Chapters in their districts a very good way to increase communication to promote some important events that now happen in a sort of vacuum thus leading to up to date innovation and other SAM related activities being lost to the general SAM membership. (the One Design Build/Fly project being an example) Another issue that is being reviewed is the Board Position of Chapter Coordinator, presently vacant, to more clearly define the responsibilities of the position and determine if it is useful or just needs propping up. We will keep an eye out for results, and if nothing happens, we will nominate and run Pres Ken for President :) AMA 27944 - SAM 5534 Over and Out The The CLIPPER CLIPPER - official - official - newsletter newsletter of SAM of SAM of 21 SAM 21 21 July April, 2016 August, 2016 2016 Page Page Page 4 4 4

Strings Too Short To Save Left: The dotted line approximates the place that the firewall, with motor and other related parts of the Jon Poco beautifully restored Comet Sailplane, went missing after an unfortunate gust driven ground loop during the rainy SAM 21 Annual.. As can be seen the missing parts have been successfully grafted back where they belong. The Sailplane rises from disaster to fly again Originally Built by Dad, Dr. Joe Poco, this model has endured several different lives. Right: Another puzzle. Can anyone identify this well known modeler seen at the recent SAM 21 Schmidt Ranch Annual? Could it be another Henry?
