Mischa Salkid-Pearl Oceas: waves merge with the bright sky or Masaki Hasebe ive cellos
Perormace Istructios: Accidetals: There are several quarter-toe ad microtoal accidetals used i this score. They are as ollow: = 1/4 toe higher = 1/4 toe lower = /4 toe hight = ca. 1/8 toe higher (this ad the ollowig are essetially just shadigs o the itch o eed to be exact) = ca. 1/8 toe lower (see above) Rhythms: The rhythms i this iece are rarely meat to be layed with total accuracy. I act, accuracy may detract rom the eelig o a uihibited low o itch that I wat this iece to dislay. For istace, whe oe erormer is asked to execute quitulets lastig a bar, while aother layer has setulets, I am ot askig or a ercetible iterlay o rhythms resultig rom s ad s; istead, these devices are used because they oer dieret ways to write the same soud. Dyamics: Whe layers use mutes, the dyamics writte rereset the eort used. For istace, a layer readig with a mute will lay soter tha a layer readig with a mute. *ote: Cello 2 requires a ractice mute or art o the iece. Ideally this will ot make a roouced soud whe attached ad removed. Executio: A ew techiques are ehasized throughout this iece. Oe is glissadi, which should always be layed as careully as ossible, maitaiig a cosistet rise ad all. Aother techique is the use o vibrato uless seciied, light vibrato may always be used; geerally the degree will be seciied. Fially, layers are asked at times to execute vibrato which corresod to seciic rhythms each "ote" ca be layed as a ull eriod o vibrato; that is, both dow ad u agai. I the rhythms are too ast, each "ote" may be treated as a hal-eriod. Eect: I mea or this music to cature both the uredictability ad soothig regularity o water. Whe the music shits rom a thi texture to thick, or rom sot to aggressive, I am ot lookig or "musical" executio I wat it to seem almost as though the erormers are uaware o where the waves o soud will take them. Glossary: The ollowig abbreviatios are used:.s.. oco sul oticello s.. sul oticello s.t. sul tasto m.s.t. molto sul tasto.o. ordiary bow ositio
Oceas waves merge with the bright sky Program Notes Oceas belogs to a small set o my ieces i which the aimlessess o the music betrays a traditioal musical exeriece. Here the music drits rom stilless to violece with disregard or exectatio. I love the eelig that a work o art commuicates ot what the artist desires, but oly what he is able to erceive; the work, like ature, is a iece o somethig ar more vast tha we ca imagie. This iece is artly based o the Sea Orga (morske orgulje) o Zadar, Croatia. A boardwalk covers immese uderwater chambers which react acoustically to the waves agaist the shore. The souds are rojected above-groud or edestrias to hear, ad the result is amazigly beautiul throbbig, getly rockig harmoies stretch ad become wared at the whim o the ocea. Recordigs o this sculture isired the harmoies ad straied itoatio o this iece. Aother isiratio is a oem by the Jaaese oet Fujiwara o Tadamichi: As I row over the lai O the sea ad gaze Ito the distace, the waves Merge with the bright sky. This oem succictly coveys the vastess o water, ad also the ways i which ature's immesity ca disguise itsel. Nature both commads attetio ad rejects it.
