NEWSLETTER MARCH 2017 Lake Harris Cruise 2/4/2017 COMMODORE S COMMENTS Ahoy Sail Club members. It s already the month of March and Spring will be upon us soon. Shiver me timbers - last month sailed by like the fastest month ever. And oh, the activities we had were more than most months. Aside from Races and Cruises, we also attended a surprise Mardi Gras event. In a Memorandum from T.H.E. Admiral dated 2-1-2014 it is noted that the holder of T.H.E. Admirals Gavel could be keel hauled for not passing it on. Our meeting at Amy Bonnert s Lake Camp was memorable to me because I finally passed that blasted thing on to a selected couple of many possible sailors whose mishaps were monumental in the recent past. Liz & Dan Schnebel earned it for blowing off the February Rum Race which was blessed with the most perfect sailing weather in recent years. Sail on Liz & Dan! The clock is ticking the Moons cycle. I hope to see you all at the next Buccaneer Night. All of our activities are in this newsletter of which I get an advance copy thanks to the Publisher, Editor and our very own Secretary, Captain Art Twitchell, which, b-t-w, does an Outstanding job of it and also, b-t-w, was one of the many Captains who narrowly missed receiving T.H.E. Admirals Gavel. Blimey - for tearing off the hitch from his land vehicle while launching his Sailing Ship. The thing is for Captain Art, that it s actually a major part of his skills as a Sailor. He does things like this for fun there s a strategy involved It s all part of his master plan. Yo ho ho OSC OFFICERS Commodore: John Cicio jscicio@gmail.com Vice Commodore: Jim Edens jledens@gmail.com Secretary: Art Twitchell artmai2@gmail.com Treasurer: Jan Cole jc4551@cox.net Your Commodore, John Cicio MARCH 2017 EVENTS Mar 2 Buccaneer Nite 6:30 PM / Pasta Faire / Belleview Mar 4 Trans - Monroe Race / LMSA / Lake Monroe, Sanford Mar 16 Pot-Luck Dinner Meeting 6:30 PM / Sandra Harton s Mar 18 Shamrock Regatta / GATC / Palatka, St John s River

John greeted folks by asking if they wanted one of his Nectar of the Gods drinks that he had prepared for the occasion. This was a certain give-away that John was planning to pass on the Gavel that night. Herbert Lucy, a new visitor, came as Art Twitchell's guest. He became actively engaged with our catamaran sailors; Bob Cole, Jim Edens and Dan Schnebel as Herbert has a 17 trimaran. It was dark and cool outside but very cozy inside and we soon set to enjoying the many pot-luck selections that gathered in abundance on the Amy s table. The time was 8 PM when John Cicio called the meeting to order and gave a "Thank You" to Amy for being our host and opening her house to us. Big applause and cheers from all! John acknowledged the February birthdays: Amy Bonnert, John Hult, Mark Statler, Herb Moore and Jim Edens. He asked how things were going on our OSC Website and there were no objections. He had Jan Schumacher review the password again so members could access the "Members Only part of the Website. Jan Cole gave a treasurer's report of $2667.87 at the beginning of Jan and a balance of $2672.27 on Jan 31, 2017 The Report was approved with only one Nay. The Secretary s January Minutes which were in the February Newsletter was approved in spite of 2 Nays. Old Business was moved to pass as there was none offered. New Business: Art mentioned that on Saturday, February 25th the Friends of Silver River State Park was having a pancake breakfast if anyone was interested. He pointed out that it would be a good opportunity for kayaking if any one was interested. He would put out a reminder email prior to the event. Page 2

Someone from the floor asked if the date on our calendar was correct for the Shamrock Regatta at Palatka on March 18th. Art said he would check and confirm it for the next meeting. Sandra Harton will host our next Pot-Luck dinner on March 16th. The Sims announce they would have to offer a new date for the Meeting of the Induction of Officers on May 20th. They will let us know well in advance of the event. We need still a host for the April 20th Pot-Luck Dinner/ Meeting, any volunteers please contact John Cicio or Art Twitchell. Our annual April Regatta is coming up and Art pointed out that because of the current low levels of the lake and launching difficulties if we should market the event to small sailboats and multihulls that could be launched from Kiwanis Beach. John Cicio pointed out we don t have an official Racing Commodore this cycle, but Bob Cole, Art Twitchell, Jim Edens and and Ed Sims gave a nod to getting together perhaps on-line and do some brainstorming. Bob said he has crafted the NOR and will email something to the committee for starters. The new business was officially ended. John turned the meeting over to Jan Cole for the Raffle and 50/50. The Winners were: Anchor line - Amy Bonnert, Scratch-offs - Mark Ciraco, Jan Schumacher, Amy Bonnert, Ed Sims and Dan Schnebel. The 50/50 of $43 was won by Jim Edens-$23. OBRS meeting started at 8:39. John explained that he was prepared to hand over the GAVEL and kept everyone in suspense till he announced the new recipients as Liz and Dan Schnebel. He said it was an act of love and that the reason was that they did not enter their catamaran in the Rum Race. Perhaps there will soon be another act of love, this time by the Schnebels. Many of us will be holding out breath. It was a great meeting and a good time! Respectfully submitted, Art Twitchell Secretary See our Website at: www.ocalasailingclub.org (Also visit http://ocalasailingclub.shutterfly.com for photos.) February s Buccaneer Night Dinner at TooJay s Little did we know that it was Mardi Gras night at Spanish Springs on the town square February 2, the date planned to dine at TooJay s. Many streets were blocked off and the parking was crowded. However, 14 of our loyal buccaneers fought their way through the mobs and we had a most pleasurable time. TooJay s rewarded us with free deserts for our perseverance and patience. Page 3

Cruise on Lake Harris to the Hideaway Restaurant Saturday, February 4th 2017 We had 2 sailboats and a shadow motorboat this year with 12 mariners. Lynn Sims, her mother and May Lynn met us at the Hideaway for lunch, our destination. The weather was great and the wind generous. We were pleased to see a plethora of other sailboats at the dock sharing our same vision for the day s adventure. Ed Sims skippered Point Blank Hunter 23 with crew Paul Straub, Jim, Lisa Edens and daughter. Photos by Bobbie Ciraco and Lisa Edens Page 4

The Cruise and Restaurant continued: Art Twitchell skippered Wyndrifter Catalina 22 with Amy Bonnert, Wendy Richards and George Galindo. Mark and Bobbi Ciraco shadowed our flotilla with their trusty Whaler with Lydia Galindo as passenger. Page 5

Rum Race # 2 / Spring Series / Feb 18, 2017 The appointed day of Rum Race II started out beautifully with temperatures in the high 60's as competitors started arriving at "Sims Beach". The wind was light but the promise from the weather man was for temperatures in the high 70's and wind in the 10 knot range. For once the promise was kept and the competitors enjoyed another great sailing day. The first race ended with Bob Cole and crew Herb Lucy on Hobie 17 Sport finishing.05 minutes ahead of Ed and Paul on Harpoon 5.2 followed by Art and crew Wendy and Penney on Harpoon 5.2 Last came Jim Edens who is still trying to conquer the tacking procedure on his 18 Square catamaran. The second race ended with Bob at the front followed by Ed, Jim and Art. Race 3 was threatened by rain but held off until the end. Bob once again led the way around the course with Ed, Jim and Art chasing after. All in all a great sailing day with great friends and competitors. At the end of the second round the points are: Ed - 12, Bob - 16, Jim - 23, George - 23, Art. - 29 (Note. Low point is in the lead. Also, Bob, George and Art have missed one regatta.) Ross Martin Races in the 2017 RS Aero FL State Championship earlier this month of February. It was the first time he raced this class of sailboat and said it was great fun! Events coming up soon in March: Buccaneer s Night Dinner will be at Pasta Faire in Belleview on 441. The parking will be very convenient compared to last month at TooJay s where we competed with the Mardi Gras event crowds. This has been one of our favorites in the past but was skipped over last cycle. Should be a lot of fun, be sure to sign up on the Evite if you haven t already. See you there March 2nd 6:30 PM! Our Rum Race #3 of the Spring Series is Sat. April 8th, These races are the best chance to get your boats out to practice for the April Regatta. Also for members who want to sail and don t have a sailboat. Come out to jump on board or crew. It s casual, competitive and builds camaraderie! There is a large bottle of rum and placing certificates that are at stake so join in for the last race before the Regatta. Meet us at Sims Beach for the 11:30 am Skippers Meeting. Page 8
