Issue 60-09 September 2018 In This Issue From the Helm Misc. Ramblings GTYC Elections Melges Report Aunt Wauneena Uncle Homer p1 p2 p3 p5 p6 p7 Just got back from the Red Fox Regatta where once again GTYC yachts shined. Congrats to all who participated, including the 10 racers and 6 cruisers/support boats from GTYC. It's always fun to take our comradery on the road. First of week of September brings us the Fall Series, and with luck an extended summer with wind. Speaking of wind, this is a good time of year to check and update your mooring pennants, throw a third one at it just to be safe against those Nasty Fall Northerlies. Submissions due by the 4th Tuesday of the month prior to publication waterlines@gtyc.org The Commodore's Ball is in September this year, we wanted to have it before we're through the sailing season, California Beach Party theme, good food, good music, good friends. Tickets are available online, please purchase yours in advance, it helps us plan the evening. And we'll have fun, fun, fun, 'till Heather puts her Redwing away. Let's enjoy the end of the 2018 sailing season. See you around the club. Commodore Bob Clark
Misc. Ramblings PC40 Miscellaneous Ramblings..PC40 As I write this we have 10 boats on their way to Charlevoix for the Red Fox Regatta. Jeff and Mary Ann Maier will be flying solo this year as Judge and PRO. Good luck to them both. Full report next month or go to yachtscoring.com for tonight s Nucore Triangle Regatta or the Red Fox Regatta on Saturday and Sunday. Here are a couple of interesting articles from Sailing Scuttlebutt this week. The first one is about the Optimist Dinghy Canadian Nationals held at Squamish, B. C. I found it interesting as it compares Squamish to Lake Garda in Italy. I learned some interesting things about both venues. The next article is about Terry Hutchinson being inducted into the Maryland Sports Hall of Fame. Many of us remember Terry from when he worked for Ed Reynolds at the old Shore Sail Loft on Cherry Bend Road. He has gone on to become one of the top sailors and tacticians in the world. The other night while you were all out Nan-C- Jaying Ed regaled our table with some entertaining stories about Terry and how he can be a bit intense at times. Congratulations Terry!!! Thanks to Jed Mooney, Sam Bender, and John Nelson for helping me with the buoys for the Watershed Center s Open Swim event and to Dave Phelps for the use of his Whaler. It was another successful event with about 80 swimmers completing the 2 statute mile course. Only 2 had to be picked up at the 2 hour time limit. Not much else to report this month. See you all at the Club!!!

Melges 24 GTYC Invitational MO-18 Tom Babel s Two Pair Aces & Fours takes the hand at the 2018 GTYC Invitational. The Grand Traverse Yacht Club, Traverse City, MI. hosted it s 21st Annual Invitational Regatta on August 18-19, 2018. On the beautiful waters of West Grand Traverse Bay, twentythree teams from across the United States and Canada gathered to be challenged in what would become a predominantly light/medium air regatta. Four races were held on Saturday, with no races Sunday as The Bay glassed off. Tom Babel skippered Chris Lamb s PADAWAN 3 to a score line of 1-4-4-1 (Two Pair Aces & Fours) to win the regatta. With crew Mike Elcoate (trimmer), Richie Ellis (bow) and Jean Risk (caddie), P3 was able to stay away from a big number which was clearly the key to a podium finish. Babel was followed by Canadian Dan Berezin on SURPRISE with a score line of 2-2-7-7 (Two Pair Deuces and Sevens). Completing the podium was fellow Canadian Mike Gozzard and his crew on RUSH (The Pretty Red Boat) in third with scores 12-3-2-3 (One Pair of Threes). Local favorite and regatta host Mike Dow and his TOASTER TEAM, along with Fred Rozelle on RUSTLER rounded out the top five places. The sailing conditions were quite challenging to say the least. The light air of the first two races was accompanied by substantial differentials in breeze velocity and direction. The weather mark boat later described it as two breezes opposing each other from the top left and the top right. Trying to determine which breeze to set up for was really making some tacticians brains swell to an uncomfortable condition. Things settled down later in the afternoon and by race #4 there was a very nice 10-12, full hiking breeze. No wind, No racing on Sunday. One of the great traditions of The Invitational is the Saturday night prime rib dinner,,,,and it did not disappoint again this year. Many thanks to the GTYC staff, volunteers, race committee and membership for hosting another great event on THE BAY.
