Their campaign commenced in the Round Robin stage where they topped their group with 3 wins + 61. Then onto the knockout draw and the draw they had could only be described as brutal. First up they defeated Lee Schraner who is current Australian Champion of Champions Singles Champion by 15-12. Their next opponents were Jeremy Henry and Cabramatta s Ray Pearse and both were superb to win 19-11. Onto the next round against Grandview favourites in the Rowe brothers and in a tight affair they were victorious 23-17. Onto the Round 16 and their hardest game of the campaign saw them win on an extra end. Down 3 shots playing the last bowl, Healey was able to draw shot to win the game 16-15. From now on Herden and Healey s draw was against the who s who of the game. The quarter final was against Jayden Christie and Aron Sheriff. They were down early but won the second half of the game 14-4 to win by 18-14. Onto the semi-final against the local favourites and current internationals in Scotland s Kevin Anderson and Canada s Ryan Bester. They played fantastic draw shots and always had the answers to win the match 20-14 and a place in the Final against Warilla s Harley McDonald and Aaron Teys. It took the guys a few ends to adjust to the green as McDonald and Teys led early. It all started to turn around on the 7 th end with scores 4 all and 1 down on the end, Healey played controlled weight to take out the shot bowl clean and scored 3 shots. McDonald and Teys fought back to level the scores at 7 all after 10 ends, Herden and Healey held 3 shots on the 11th and 12th ends but both times Teys missed his drive and they skipped out to a 13-7 lead. The guys grew in confidence and it was seen as they extended their lead with fantastic draw and conversion shots to win the title by 21-10. On reflection over their win Chris Herden said This is by far the biggest achievement in my bowls career and it s awesome to do it with a great mate. Carl Healey said on winning the event I m absolutely ecstatic to have achieved something so prestigious and to win the title with a great mate in Herdo makes it even better. We put in a lot of practice and it just goes to show that hard work and practice leading up to the Open can get the results. 1

VAN ASCH AND ANDERSON TASTE SUCCESS AT THE OPEN St Johns Park Rebecca Van Asch has taken out the Australian Open Ladies Singles title at Broadbeach BC by defeating Western Australia s Kristina Krstic 21-19 in an unbelievable final. To reach the final, Van Asch defeated Cabramatta s defending champion Ellen Ryan in the semi-final. Van Asch was down 17-12 in the game that is first to 21 but held her nerve over the final few ends to secure the title. Van Asch was over the moon in winning the title to join her two golds medals at the Commonwealth Games and announcing the impending birth of her first child. Congratulations to Cabramatta s Carmen Anderson as she was runner up in the Ladies Fours title. ZONE 12 PENNANTS THE FINALS SCHEDULE The Zone Match Committee has released the Pennant Finals Schedule for Grades 2-7. The matches will be played at St Johns Park Bowling Club on Saturday 21 st and Sunday 22 nd July. There is a spare weekend on 28 th and 29 th July. LOCALS EMBARK ON AUSTRALIAN TOUR OF UK Bowls Australia have chosen a new generation of players to represent Australia on a 3-week tour of England and Wales. Six players of the ten players chosen come from clubs within Zone 12 and Lansdowne District. Cabramatta s Aaron Wilson, Ellen Ryan and Corey Wedlock are with St Johns Park s Kelsey Cottrell, Ben Twist and Rebecca Van Asch (all pictured). The tour is designed to take a mixture of established and development players so they can gain exposure on UK outdoor greens in preparation for the 2022 Commonwealth Games at Birmingham, England. Mount Lewis Steve Glasson (Coach) and Cabramatta s Gary Willis (Assistant Coach) are also part of the tour. After their mammoth trip of 30 hours to get to their first playing destination of Birmingham, the coaching staff had the side straight out onto the greens against a couple of local s sides before they tackled the mighty England side in a 5 test match series. Results were mixed over the first 2 days as the players were getting over the jet lag and use to the slow 10 second greens. They may also have been in shock as they were greeted with heat wave conditions, well for England standards, as temperatures were over 25 degrees most days. The side then took on the might of the English in a 5 test series at the home of England Lawn Bowls, Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa, the site for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Prior to the commencement of the First Test, St Johns Park s Ben Twist, with great mate in Warilla s Jesse Noronha, were handed their international caps. Australia won the First Test, lost the Second test narrowly but adjusted to the conditions to defeat England in the remaining 3 Test matches to win the series 4-1. They now travel to Wales for the second half of the tour. 3

SENIOR INTER ZONE COME UP SHORT After a strong trial against Zone 13, the Zone Selectors picked a very strong Senior Inter Zone side to contest the Bowls NSW Senior Inter Zone Championships at Figgo Bowling Club. The side approached the Championships determined to go one better than last year where they were Runners Up to Zone 2. They commenced their campaign against local rivals in Zone 5 and were always in control of the match to win on all three rinks. Julio Posadas (Chester Hill RSL) and his rink won 28-18 and the team were victorious 80-58 (10-0). The second match was against the very strong Zone 4 (Mid-Western) side and this was a very tight contest from the beginning. Gerard Short (St Johns Park) and his rink were in a real fight though the other two rinks countered this and over the final few ends it was neck and neck with many lead changes. The guys dug deep and scored many shots over the closing ends to be victorious 69-67 (9-1). Tony White (Chester Hill) and his rink were victorious 30-14. Heading into Round 3, Zone 12 needed one rink victory to secure a semi-final spot. They were up against the strong Zone 13 side, a team they had met in the trial. Gerard Short s rink was on fire early and skipped out to a good lead and hoping this would be the point required s the other two rinks were down. At the end of the match Short was victorious 23-21 and the point to secure a semi-final berth. The other two rinks lost marginally and eventually the side lost 61-51 (9-1). Onto the semi-final and the side were up against arch rival in Zone 10. There have been many matches between the two Zones over the years and they are always hard fought to the end. And this was no different as the lead changed on many occasions throughout the contest. Though going down closely on two rinks, Julio Posadas and his rink had an excellent 23-11 rink win to bring Zone 12 side home 55-52 and a spot in the Final. The Final saw the side up against the extremely strong Zone 15 (Central Coast) team. Zone 15 led early by 23-11 after 20 ends but Zone 12 fought back to be only down 29-25 after 35 ends. Then Zone 15 applied massive pressure to skip away to a 43-28 lead after 43 ends. Zone 12 fought back again to be down 49-42 after52 ends. It seems every time Zone 12 had the chance to score, Zone 15 would play the perfect bowl and secure shot. Over the closing ends the fight continued but Zone 15 keep playing the big bowl to run out victorious 58-53. The side was Back Row left to right: Julio Posadas (Chester Hill RSL); George Bakulic (St Johns Park); Warren Ryan (Birrong Sports); Tony White (Chester Hill RSL); Chris Tindall (St Johns Park); John Roach (Moxon Sports); George Humphries (Manager St Johns Park); Col Strudwick (Cabramatta). Front Row: Alan McLachlan (Cabramatta); John Boniface (St Johns Park); Gerard Short (St Johns Park); Geoff Rymer (St Johns Park) and Steve Smith (Cabra Vale Diggers). Senior Inter Zone side 4
