M en' s Indo or Tr ac k a nd Fiel d Antonio Wood and Jacob Lysher won conference titles to lead the Keydet men's track and field team during the 2012-13 indoor campaign. Wood claimed the title in the heptathlon, doing so for the second consecutive season. He would go on to a top-eight finish at the IC4A indoor championships in his final collegiate indoor season. Lysher, meanwhile, rebounded from multiple years of injury-related struggles to take the 800-meter title. It was the first conference individual title of his career. He went on to post a personal best at the IC4A meet in early March. In other news, one of VMI's stalwarts, Andrey Dmitriev, had difficulties returning to the States after visiting his home country of Russia over the winter break. Dmitriev did finally return in January but was not at peak effectiveness until the outdoor season, although he did finish fourth in the 800 and fifth in the 3K at the Big South's indoor meet. W omen's I n do or Track and Field The VMI women s track team posted several notable results during the 2012-13 indoor season. Senior Jenna Moye was not only among three Keydets (Kelsey Newcomb and Renee Reives) to qualify for the ECAC Championships, but Moye also won her first conference title at the Big South Indoor meet, prevailing in the mile. Moye won in 5:04.43 despite not having competed in over a month. The Keydets wound up tied for 9th at the meet with 25 total points. Also earning all-conference honors indoor was Renee Reives, who finished second in the shot put. Earlier in the indoor campaign, Reives closed to within a foot of Mildred Cooper s school shot put record set in 2005. Kelsey Newcomb and Amanda Okani also earned individual points at the conference championships, with Newcomb placing sixth in the 800-meters. In the preliminary round, Newcomb (2:15.29) had broken Moye s school record and recorded the top overall qualifying time for finals. Newcomb went on to finish 20th in the 800 at the ECAC meet, while Moye finished eighth in the mile and Reives placed 11th in the shot put. M en' s O ut do or Track and Fiel d Youth was served during the 2013 VMI track and field outdoor season, while veteran Antonio Wood ended his career and Andrey Dmitriev qualified for the NCAA Preliminary Round for the first time. Dmitriev was the last of the major stories standing, as he advances to the quarterfinals (second round of preliminaries) at the NCAA Preliminary Round in Greensboro, N.C. in late May. He entered as the 41st seed of 48 declared and qualified athletes in the 1,500-meter, and finished fourth in his first round heat to advance. He did not qualify for Eugene, Ore., however, finishing 12th in his second race of the weekend. The redshirt junior's season also included his first individual All-IC4A honor, a third-place finish in the 1,500-meter, and two all-big South laurels, second place finishes in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter. Wood was the Big South runner-up in the decathlon for the third consecutive season, and earned an IC4A qualification spot in the event as well. He scored 17 individual points at his final outdoor conference meet, as in addition to the second place effort in the decathlon, he placed fourth in the long jump with a new personal best (7.22 meters) and also finished fifth in the high jump. He was one of three Keydets to score in that event, a trio that included freshmen Korey Bullard, who finished eighth, and title winner Avion Jones, who became the first Keydet to win a conference high jump title outdoors since current assistant coach Garrett Brickner did it in 2005. The freshmen class was not limited to high jumpers, however, as sprinter Aron Long qualified for the IC4A Championships in both the 100 and 200, and throwers Jordan White and Joel Hoisington, who were each competing in their first collegiate seasons (Hoisington had redshirted the previous year) enjoyed solid campaigns. Sophomores Quincy Murphy and Hartnel Paultre also had standout performances, with Murphy earning his first career all-big South laurel in the decathlon and Paultre scoring conference points for the first time at those same Championships, thanks to a 50-second personal record in the 10,000- meter. W omen's O utdoor Tr ac k a nd Fiel d The VMI women s track and field team set five new school records during the 2013 outdoor season, including three at the Big South Championships. Renee Reives bested Mary Grace Lemon s former mark in the discus, while Lemon herself broke Ketra Alexander s hammer throw mark by some 12 feet. Lemon became the only Keydet woman to ever surpass the 50-meter barrier, and did so three times at that meet. Both Reives and Lemon earned top five finishes with their school record efforts, while Amanda Okani was seventh in the heptathlon with a school record effort. Reives was one of two all-conference performers at that meet, as she earned her second straight runner-up finish in the shot put (after finishing second indoors as well), and Kate Collins earned her second career Big South title in the pole vault, winning in dramatic fashion on misses over rival Mary Lawrence of Coastal Carolina. The other two Keydets school records fell in the middle distances, as Kelsey Newcomb wrapped up a banner freshman season with a 2:14.25 clocking in her final race of the year, the 800-meters at the RU Invitational, and Jenna Moye posted a 4:32.56 1,500-meter time in her final collegiate event to break the former mark in that discipline. Moye s time was some two seconds quicker than any Keydet had ever run the 1,500, was a three-second personal best and the fastest time in the Big South all season. She was also named to the Big South All-Academic Team, making it a clean sweep of VMI s spots on the XC, indoor track and outdoor track academic squads.
