SAILING ASSOCIATION OF MARCO COMMODORE S CABIN Ken Bardon, Commodore ADVICE FROM THE VICE Micki Gobeil, Vice Commodore I am writing this article aboard Moonbeam on our way to Sanibel for Moonbeam s final SAMI cruise of the winter season. The sun is out and the wind is almost non-existent or slightly on the nose (Oh! I forgot, we are a sailboat, and when you have a destination, that always seems to be the case). Last weekend was the Bud Light Regatta. It went off very well, and a good time was had by all at the awards party on Sunday. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting on May 10 at the Capri Community Center. Our Vice Commodore Micki, as usual, has a fun theme planned: Derby Day. In addition, some of the items I will be addressing will deal with attracting new members, filling positions on the Bridge for next year and financing for our club. I wish everyone a good summer, wherever you will be, and look forward to reuniting in the fall with an active new season. In this Issue. Page 2 Cruising About Around the Buoys Pages 3-5 Pictures from Bud Light Regatta events WHEW! How the time flies. Here it is spring time already, the Bud Light Sailing Regatta has just been run and on May 5th the 144th Kentucky Derby horse race will be running. So, let's get ready to celebrate this traditional event with FLAIR! Dressing for the occasion is optional but wearing a fancy hat and colorful attire makes for more fun and laughter. A taste of Mint Juleps helps also along with Kentucky Bourbon Style food. So, mark your calendar and everyone plan to attend the SAMI Membership Dinner Meeting on Thursday, May 10 th at the Capri Community Center from 6-9pm. Remember, Guests are always welcome and often become new members. With so many of our winter resident SAMI Members leaving soon for the summer, this will be our last event to be together as a club. So please try to attend and continue to be actively involved in supporting SAMI. After all, ACTIVE, PARTICIPATING Members are the LIFE BLOOD of our traditional sailing club. RSVP as soon as possible to mickigo@embarqmail.com or 642-4241 to confirm your attendance on May 10 th and decide which dish you will provide. Thank you in advance for your continued interest and support of SAMI. Page 6 May 10 meeting notice & Upcoming Events Page 7 SAMI Membership application
CRUISIN ABOUT AROUND THE BUOYS Peter Coggins, Rear Commodore Rob Reiley, Fleet Captain The Bud Light Regatta was a great success! The weather was beautiful and all of the events were well attended. The racers might have hoped for a little more wind, but the Race Committee still managed to run 4 races on Saturday. The Pursuit race on Sunday was only 7.68 miles, but that was a good distance considering the light air. The Speakeasy was an excellent venue for the Awards Dinner. Over 70 people attended and a good time was had by all. The only low point of the weekend was that no SAMI boats raced on Saturday and Moonbeam was the only SAMI boat to race on Sunday. Hopefully, we can get more Club participation next year. Wendy and I are so happy to finally be back in Marco, away from the seemingly endless winter up home. However, to bring us back to a bit of reality we, too, have had to deal with a lot of significant home restoration and repairs down here it sure beats the alternative!! SAMI has just hosted a nicely attended Joint cruise to Sanibel Island with the Marco fleet departing all together then a quiet and relaxful weekend. I want to thank those of you who were considerate enough to respond to our request for a response as to your coming on the cruise or not. This year we had a very nice increase in attendance of sailors coming by boat and road, and guests, too. Just around the corner is our favorite cruise to Punta Gorda and Fisherman s Village which is our final SAMIhosted cruise of the season. So MARK your calendar (May 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 and...). This has to be the most picturesque cruise venue with an infinite variety of shore-side activities. You can get easily caught up in the action or simply stay off to the side or simply alternate the environments! You certainly won t be bored guaranteed! The new SAMI Cruise Guide for Punta Gorda ( poster ) will be forthcoming via email (if not out already). Realize that SAMI is the host for this a Joint SWF Cruising Event so we will have all of our sister YCs represented as well as some guests coming from further north (PGSC). Wendy and I have a granddaughter up in Spartanburg, SC who is graduating from Clemson on 10 May, and then she is to be married in October, so we will be busy before we see you again. SAMI racers are invited to participate in the following local regattas: NSYC Most Memorable Regatta May 18-19, 2018 NSYC Return to Reality May 25-26, 2018 If you are interested in participating in a Southwest Florida regatta as a registered competitor, or as a crew member, contact me at 443-280-1500 for more information. See you around the buoys! SAMI mourns the recent passing of Life Member Joe Douglas in March 2018. A memorial service is being planned. Former member John Harkless on April 7, 2018. John was SAMI s Fleet Captain in 2011 and 2012. Services were private. 2
