Indy Mopar Club News www.indymoparclub.com September 2014 Jan Peel Editor 317.357.5760 Tom Kelly, President 317.439.1727 Evan Springer, Vice President 317.416.3727 Mike Leyes, Treasurer 765.524.0326 Dave Opel, Secretary 317.850.1834 Dave Watt, Communications Director 317.696.6071 Meetings are the last Thursday of every month except November & December. Next regular meeting: Thursday, September 25, 2014 will be held at MCL Cafeteria, 3630 South East street Indianapolis (US 31- N of Southern Plaza between Sumner & National). Meet for dinner at 6pm, meeting at 7pm. A Map Quest link is available on the IMC website www.indymoparclub.com. From Indy Mopar Club (IMC) President: Many, many thanks to all who participated and helped in making the Westgate Chrysler Cruise-In on Sept 6, another wonderful success. Bob Davidson and the staff of Westgate put on a fantastic show with delicious food and crowd pleasing music. Bob even hammered the drums to a number of songs to the pleasure of the crowd. Club members pitched in to oversee parking, registration and the door prize process. Bob added a few novel touches this year photos of each car or truck and a video interview as each participant drove in that day. JDRF donations were accepted throughout the day. The weather was a bit soggy the morning of the show so it may have scared off a few vehicles but we had 71 show up that day. Though a bit lower than we hoped, we are proud to say that the cruise-in raised $1334 for JDRF this year. Subsequent to the show, Bob informed us that the dealership s owner wrote a check to round up the JDRF gift to $1500. Another outstanding gesture from the fine people at Westgate Chrysler in Plainfield. Now next up, we have the Sept 27 th, Finer Details car club get-together at Ken Mosier s restoration facility in Danville. RSVPs are required for what looks to be a great time. Don t forget to pencil in Saturday October 4 th for the Club turnout for the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) Run/Walk in Military Park. We ll need 10 vehicles for display so please contact the IMC email if interested. Please support this noble event and sign up for the IMC Team at the JDRF Walk at the web address: <http://www2.jdrf.org/site/tr?team_id=163344&pg=team&fr_id=3948> Last note, Club officer nominations will be coming up next month. I d urge you to consider helping the Club in some capacity. We can only grow and improve with everyone s input. See you at the MCL on Thursday 25th th. Best wishes, Tom Kelly Sept 2014 IMPORTANT NOTICE Ken Mosier's Finer Details (old US 36, Danville, IN) Sept 27th Cruise-in and Cookout is open to the Indy Mopar Club, the Modern Mopars of Indiana and the Street Machines, Ltd car clubs with Ken also inviting limited others. It will start around 11am, with the band "The Elect" starting at 1pm. It will run through evening. Bring your own folding chairs, your own cooler & drinks. The "regular" vehicles will park across the street at the insurance agent's lot with the Classics, Muscle cars, Hot Rods, etc. parking around his shop. All attendees should bring a covered dish or snack. Ken will supply BBQ sandwiches. We can set up a JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) donation bucket to help our club charity. There will be no flyers as the individual clubs will notify their membership to keep it from getting too large a turn-out. IMC September 2014 Page 1

RSVP IS REQUIRED SO KEN WILL HAVE AN IDEA OF THE NUMBER ATTENDING so he has ADEQUATE BBQ PREPARED. IMC members may RSVP to the club site at indymoparclub@indymoparclub.com, and we will turn in the IMC count to Ken. Members Information It was good to see Larry & Susan Mayes and Tony Fields at the August meeting. Larry has had rotator cuff surgery but is doing well. And Tony looked great. 2014 Mopar Nationals by Steve Wisdom I have always heard the old saying, the older you get the faster time flies. That is true to me. I can t believe that the 2014 Mopar Nationals have come and gone. The weather was good, partly sunny, with a little breeze, and no rain. If we would have listened to the one forecast, with rain all day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday we all would have left our cars at home. Well I did leave my 1970 Roadrunner at home, but not because of the weather. The Saturday before the Nats, I took the Bird to a Car Show in Shelbyville, IN. Driving the country roads the car was drifting all over the road. So the car went to the shop to have the front end rebuilt. I drove my 1999 Dakota R/T to the Nats instead of the Roadrunner. The Indy Mopar Club was well represented with around 13 cars. We had around 25 club members, family and their friends, at the Nationals. We all met at our tent city and then went different directions; the swap meet, car corral, drag racing, or the Manufacturer s Midway. Planning meeting, should we go to the swap meet or the drag races Kelly family reunion We all enjoyed watching the drag racing part of the Nationals. And we had two of our club members to watch as Dave Watt and Mike Leyes were both were racing their cars. Not sure how they finished, but it was fun watching someone you know. Mike Leyes Dave Watt IMC September 2014 Page 2

Brian Berkowitz, Bill Bratton, and Dave Sanders had their cars parked at the Hemi Tribute Section. Mike Leyes and Dave Watt parked their cars in the pits since they were drag racing their cars. The rest of the Mopar Club cars parked together at tent city. Six of our club members cars Tom Kelly s baby 1968 Hemi Roadrunner We all had our yearly Mopar Nationals naps. But some were not able to avoid the camera. Rick Zimmerman checking his eye lids for holes Tom Kelly s annual nap. The attendance seemed to be down this year. Also a few vendors were missing as well. But the star of the show to most of us was the 2015 Challenger Hell Cat. I know we have more than a few club members who would love to have one of the awesome machines. 2015 Challenger Hell Cat Engine bay.. It was a treat watching a 1969 Daytona Charger do its numbers on the dyno. This car was brought back to life on the TV Show Graveyard Cars. IMC September 2014 Page 3

I would love to see more Mopar Club Members at the 2015 Mopar Nationals. We all had a great time together and enjoyed all the Nationals had to offer. I am lost. Rick and Ginger Zimmerman have been so nice to bring me every year, so my original owner can find me. If this is your chair, the Zimmerman s won t charge you any storage fees. Author~~~~ Steve Wisdom Mopar Nats- Tom Kelly s scattered thoughts We had another great time with friends, family and the awesome Mopars at Columbus again this year. Got to visit with my good friend Kent Wallace, a past IMC VP now living in Michigan and still working at the Chrysler Tech Center. By the way, he is making progress on the restoration of his silver 67 R/T convertible so it may be at the Nats next year. I got to tour my niece Sophia who came over with my youngest brother John for her first Mopar Nationals. Of course we had to quiz her on what car she d like to have if she could pick just one. Turns out to be a 1965 Dodge Coronet Sedan Super Stock. She was also very specific not a hardtop it has to be a 2 door Sedan. Guess I need to start looking so we find one by the time she finishes college! Brother Dan drove his Viper straight through (just under 19 hours straight) from his new place in Naples FL. Pretty obvious we re die-hards about the Nats. Brother Rick and cousin Pat LaGrange came over with their sons in Rick s 383 64 Plymouth. Rick s son Patrick has been talking about the Hellcat Challenger since the internet buzz announced it so he got to see it. Really wished it made a pass down the quarter mile but if it did, we missed that. Still cool to see it. He did get a Hellcat shirt. A little more affordable IMC September 2014 Page 4

And last, thanks to Rick and Ginger Zimmerman for sharing their new travel trailer home on wheels with us this year. Just shows what great friends for life you can meet though this wonderful club!
