Lake Charles Yacht Club The Tacking Times Newsletter THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE LAKE CHARLES YACHT CLUB 2017 Board members Commodore: Guy Richards Rear Commodore: John Harris Vice Commodore: John Kalna Treasurer: Sheron Faulk Secretary: Laura Gayfield Newsletter: Philippe Girard Race: James Latour Harbor: Scott Cesar Grounds: David Sargent Social: Summer Rice News November 2017 The board met on 14 November. Here are highlights: Summer Rice is planning our Christmas social for December 16th. The club will provide some brisket. Please bring an appetizer (last name A-F), a side (G-M) or a dessert (N-Z). Drinks at 5:30, dinner at 6. If you want to participate in our white elephant gift exchange, bring a gift (value of $20-25 approx.) please, no gag gift says Summer! Our new board members for 2018 will be elected at the social. All current members are running for a new term except our commodore Guy Richards; Ralph Unglaube has expressed interest in becoming the new commodore. All members can also put their name forward at the social if they want to run for one of the positions on the board. Eric Summer donated a fridge to replace the one lost in the Harvey flood. Thanks! From race director James Latour: the next Winter series race will be on Dec. 2 nd at 12:30. Al Rees prepared official race instructions for the Winter Series: see page 3. James is also replacing / fixing some damaged or missing items: the X and F marks, the starting horn, and the red starting buoy. The city also has a lighted boat parade the same day as our next race (2 Dec.) at 6:30 pm. See page 2 for the official announcement and the entry form. Another boat parade will take place in Kemah, TX on 9 Dec. There are currently piles of concrete blocks near the harbor: these will be used to shore up the banks on the harbor side. Clubhouse: the board hired a carpenter to fix the guardrail on the stairs leading to the upstairs room. Bill Shearman donated a Dolphin Sr. to the club. The Club cannot take ownership of another boat (we only manage a fleet of SunFish), so we ll be happy to pass it on to any member interested in sailing it and paying the slip fees. Contact Sheron Faulk for info. Schedule Sat. Dec 2 Winter Series, Race 3. Skippers meeting at 12:30, race at 1 on the water. Sat. Dec 2 Xmas boat parade (LC). 6:30 pm on the boardwalk. Sat. 6 On the water: Wednesday series 5 results (overall) On the water: Winter series race 2 results (Unofficial) This was an eventful day on the water! The race began in pleasant weather: sunny with moderate winds and some stronger pockets of wind. First mark was D. Mark F had to be skipped because it was missing. David Sargent and Al Rees were doing quite well, close to the front pack at the third mark (H) despite a high Portsmouth number. Then just before the finish a nasty dark cloud brought sudden gusts and rain. David didn t have time to adjust his sails and flipped over. We couldn t get him back up because the mast was deep in the mud. Eventually Stuart Thibodeaux managed to free the boat with the help of the club boat, and David bailed out his boat on the public beach before returning safely to the club (see photos next page). I and Rémy crossed the line first but Stuart won overall on corrected time.
