Lakewood built a 7-1 lead and Delmarva began a comeback bid, but fell short. Cam Kneeland hit a three-run home run in the eighth to cut the lead down to two runs. Delmarva eventually brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Matt Hockenberry closed out the save for Lakewood. TODAY S OPPONENT: Tyler Viza will start game two for the Lakewood BlueClaws on Friday night. Viza has pitched much better this year, but he continues to receive poor run support and overall bad luck for a 5-9 record despite his 3.28 ERA. Last year, Viza led all of minor league baseball with 17 losses, and he s been much improved. This will be Viza s sixth start against the Shorebirds this season, having gone 1-3 with the lone win back on June 1st. WINNING TIME: Delmarva has won 14 of its 20 games to climb four games over.500 at 69-65. At 69 victories, the Shorebirds have surpassed their win total from 2014 with five games remaining on the schedule. It is already most wins since 2008, and they only need one more victory to clinch their first winning record since 2008. GOODBYE HOME RUN: Since the All-Star Break, Delmarva s offense has seen an uptick in power output, particularly in long balls. In 65 second-half games, the Shorebirds have hit already hit 38 home runs compared to 28 in the first half. Delmarva s 66 total homers are the most since 2012. ORIOLES WATCH: The Baltimore Orioles got a much needed win on Wednesday night, 7-6 over the Tampa Bay Rays. Former Shorebird Jonathan Schoop tied the game in the 9th inning with a two-run home run, forcing extras. Chris Davis won it for the O s with a walk-off home run to center, his second long ball of the night. PLAYER TO WATCH IVAN HERNANDEZ P The Shorebirds reliever has been lights out recently, having not allowed a run in his last eight appearances. Since August 12th, Hernandez has pitched 11 consecutive scoreless innings. Since the promotions of Garrett Cortright and Donnie Hart, Hernandez has assumed the closer role with three saves in three chances. WHO S HOT/WHO ELSE WHO S HOT ELIER LEYVA The Shorebirds outfielder just concluded an 11-game hitting streak, his longest of the season. On Monday, Leyva won the 1-0 pitchers duel vs. Hickory with a solo home run in the 7th inning. WHO ELSE CAM KNEELAND The Shorebirds utility infielder has been a consistent force in the lineup, leading the team in a multitude of offensive categories. He s tops in hits (105), RBIs (61), triples (5), total bases (155) & runs scored (63).

Game #137 Delmarva Shorebirds at Lakewood BlueClaws (Phillies) FirstEnergy Park MANAGER RYAN MINOR Minor, 41, returns for his seventh season on the Shorebirds coaching staff, and his fifth as the team s manager. In 2014, he led the Shorebirds to 66 wins, the most victories for the franchise since 2009. This is Minor s second stint in Salisbury, having previously managed the Shorebirds for three seasons (2010-12) and spent two seasons (2008-09) as the hitting coach for the Shorebirds. In between, he managed the Frederick Keys (Advanced-A) in 2013. During his tenure as manager of the Shorebirds, the team compiled 232 wins, the most of any Delmarva manager. Minor aided the development of current Orioles, Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop, who played for the Shorebirds in 2011. Minor, a longtime resident of Salisbury with his wife Allyson and two children Reagan and Finley, enjoyed a four-year run in the major leagues from 1998 through 2001. He spent his first three years with the Orioles and his final season with the Montreal Expos. Minor s playing career is best remembered for replacing Cal Ripken, Jr. at third base on September 20, 1998 when the consecutive games streak of 2,632 came to a close. The Orioles drafted Minor in the 33rd round of the 1996 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Oklahoma. In 1997, he played for Shorebirds and was an SAL All-Star third baseman. He batted.307 with 24 home runs and 97 RBIs. Minor still owns the franchise single season records for doubles (42). Minor also owns a decorated college basketball career. He is sixth all-time in scoring at Oklahoma with 1,946 points. He was selected in the second round (32nd overall) of the 1996 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.
