Andino was the first Hawk to ever win the award. Collins also earned Coach of the Year while guiding the Hampton Pirates in 2005. ACCOLADES FOR MYERS: Departed Hawk Michael Myers won the Riley Wallace National Player of the Year Award given to the nation s top transfer. In addition, Myers was nominated three different times as an All-American. During the season, he earned the Lou Henson National Player of the Week Award for the final week of December, presented weekly by CollegeInsider.com to the nation s top mid-major performer. NEW FACES: With a target on their backs as a team to be taken seriously this season, UMES will look to a fairly inexperienced group at the outset of the season. Even though there are only five true freshmen on the roster, Coach Collins has nine new players in the program this season and he returns only two starters from last season s post-season run. BEYOND THE ARC: Though the Hawks relied on the inside scoring of Mike Myers last season, outside shooting lifted the Hawks to several wins. UMES led the MEAC with a 38.2% three-point percentage, while the Hawks hold their opponents to a 32.5% mark from long range, third-best in the conference. Devin Martin, Ryan Andino and Devon Walker were all in the top 6 in the MEAC for 3-point accuracy. Walker s 70 made three-pointers were the most by a Hawk since 2008. UNIV. In an overtime victory over Sacred Heart on Saturday, Jonathan Kasibabu and Jerry Johnson stole the show. Kasibabu notched his first career double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds, while Johnson Jr. chipped in 16 points off the bench. Between his clutch effort against Sacred Heart and a 12-point night against Northwestern earlier in the week, Kasibabu took home his first career Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week Award. He is currently the top rebounding freshman in the conference, averaging 7.5 carroms per contest. DONT BE FOOLED: While the Stags are only 1-3 on the season, the Hawks can t take them lightly. Much like UMES, the early season schedule for Fairfield has been a significant challenge, including a matchup with then #1 North Carolina a week and a half ago. They hung with the Tar Heels for most of the game before UNC puled away late. Additionally, the Stags lost by only seven points to a Big10 team in Northwestern. They will also play host to a very good Columbia team before their MAAC schedule opens with the daunting task of going to Iona, who is ranked among the top mid-major programs in the nation. VETERAN LEADERSHIP: After being named to the Third Team A;;- MAAC a year ago, senior Marcus Gilbert was nominated to the pre-season ALL-MAAC team prior to the start of the season. He started 31 games a year ago and has been a staple so far again this season, averaging over 32 minutes per game. Gilbert leads the team with a 15.8 points per game average and he is second on the squad with five rebounds per contest. FAIRFIELD NUMERICAL ROSTER NO NAME Pos. Ht. Wt. Yr. 2015-16 UMES HAWKS MEN S BASKETBALL Winston-Salem State (2006-2014): Collins took over the Rams program for eight seasons, leading the team to consistent success in the CIAA in his last four years. In that time, Collins went 79-35 with the Rams, including two trips to the Division II Regional First Round. Overall, Collins posted a 116-116 record at WSSU. Hampton (2002-2006): Collins was promoted to head coach of the Pirates for four seasons, winning MEAC Coach of the Year in 2005 and earning an NCAA tournament berth in 2006. Collins lost to Monmouth in the Opening Round of the NCAA Tournament, finishing his career at Hampton with a 65-57 overall record. Hampton (1995-2002): Collins spent seven seasons as an assistant coach for the Pirates. In 2001, Hampton upset the 2-seed Iowa State in the first round of the NCAA tournament, only the 4th victory for a 15-seed in NCAA history. On April 8th, 2014, Bobby Collins was introduced as the 19th head coach in the 66-year history of the men s basketball program at UMES. Collins enters his second year at UMES, but his 14th season as a collegiate head coach. Collins made the move back to Division I and the MEAC, having coached most recently at Division II Winston-Salem State University in the CIAA. In his last four years at Winston- Salem State, Collins distinguished himself as a premier head coach. The North Carolina native led the Rams to sustained success, compiling a 79-35 record in those last four years back in Division II. Collins had originally joined WSSU as they attempted to transition to Division I, though the team struggled with the jump in competition. Collins is no stranger to the MEAC, having coached at now three different institutions in the conference. Prior to Winston- Salem State s three-year membership in the MEAC, Collins headed the program at Hampton University. His last two years with the Pirates saw Collins and the team earn Head Coach Bobby Collins Hometown: Southern Pines, N.C. College: Eastern Kentucky, 91 Experience: 2nd Season at UMES 14th overall as collegiate coach several accolades. In 2004-2005, the Pirates went 17-13 with a 13-5 record in conference play. Collins received the MEAC Coach of the Year award for his efforts that season. The next season, Collins led the Pirates to a MEAC Tournament title, earning a berth to the NCAA Tournament. With a loss to Monmouth in the Opening Round, Collins finished his tenure at Hampton with a 65-57 overall record and a 45-27 mark in MEAC play. Prior to taking over as the head coach, Collins spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Hampton. During that time, Hampton recorded one of the most memorable upsets in NCAA Tournament history, defeating the 2-seed Iowa State Cyclones in 2001. Collins was on the bench as the Pirates became just the fourth 15-seed to ever defeat a 2-seed. Collins began his coaching career as an assistant at Old Dominion University in 1994. A graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, Collins was a four-year starter for the Colonels, where he earned Ohio Valley Conference All-Freshman and Honorable Mention All-OVC as a senior. COLLINS VS.
