Talking Trash and Recycling at Trash Bash 2016 Harrison Industries Vice President Jim Harrison, Agromin CEO Bill Camarillo and I trekked up to Sacramento to attend the Trash Bash 2016 on May 11. It was a long and tiring day - we took a 5:30 a.m. flight up and a 10 p.m. flight back and got home after midnight - but the trip was worth it. Page 1 The annual event is sponsored by the California Refuse Recycling Council and held in the Senator Hotel Lobby of the State Capitol. We had a chance to meet with Senator Hannah Beth Jackson and Assembly Member Jacqui Irwin and talk trash and recycling issues with them. Assemblyman Das Williams was the speaker at lunch and called out Jim Harrison s name. Das also complemented Harrison Industries as one of the top progressive haulers in the state. We got the chance to talk to him before lunch. We will miss Das in the Assembly - term limits are driving him out - but he is running for Santa Barbara County supervisor representing Carpinteria and surrounding areas in the fall, and we wish him well. Bill Camarillo was a very popular figure at the Trash Bash because everyone wants Agromin s help with marketing their green waste material. Overall, the Trash Bash proved to be very productive. We learned a lot and met with many influential people in Sacramento, including CalRecycle s Deputy Director Howard Levinson. We re glad we attended. Director Sellars to Lead 70th Ojai Music Festival You re not going to want to miss the 70th annual Ojai Music Festival. It s set for June 9-12 under the stars at beautiful Libbey Bowl. Artistic Director Thomas W. Morris has invited opera and theater director Peter Sellars to serve as Music Director. Sellars is noted for his unique contemporary stagings of classical and contemporary operas and plays. He is a professor at UCLA, where he teaches Art as Social Action and Art as Moral Action. The event will feature new works by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, including her new chamber version of The Passion of Continued on page 2 Peter Sellars

Bullock will also be the center of a unique and poignant evening honoring the brilliance, daring, public courage and private tragedies of Josephine Baker, the American-born French dancer, singer, and actress who came to be known in various circles as the Black Pearl, Bronze Venus and even the Creole Goddess during the 1930s. As a longtime corporate sponsor, Harrison Industries encourages music lovers of all kinds to attend this culturally enriching event. Tickets are available now starting at $55. For ticket information, call 646-2053 or visit www.ojaifestival.org. Attention wine lovers, beer enthusiasts and even non-drinkers: the 30th Annual Ojai Wine Festival is set for June 12, from noon to 4 p.m., at the Lake Casitas Recreation Area. The event is put on by the Rotary Club of Ojai West and offers wine connoisseurs 60 award-winning wineries with more than 250 selections of wine from which to choose. Beer lovers can enjoy a selection of 30 premium craft beers and microbrews. Non-drinkers will have use of the VIP Lounge, which offers premium shaded seating along the lakefront and a selection of refreshing non-alcoholic beverages and bottled water along with tasty hors d oeuvres. There also will be great food, musical entertainment and a free boat ride for those who want to go on a half-hour tour of Lake Casitas. Free shuttle service from Ojai will be available as well as private shuttle rides for a price from Ojai, the Ventura train station or certain local hotels. Harrison Industries is a Community Support Sponsor and also will be providing trash and recycling pickup service for the Ojai Wine Festival which since its inception has raised over $1 million for local and international causes. Net proceeds go to aid many important Rotary of Ojai West projects, in particular science-based field trips for elementary school students on the Rotary Floating Classroom at Lake Casitas. In addition, The Rotary of Ojai West Foundation, Inc. supports many international projects that help protect the environment and drinking water, implement literacy programs, combat poverty, eradicate polio worldwide and support grants for peace projects. So, while enjoying a fun-filled day, you re also helping people in need around the world. How can you beat that? Tickets are available online at www.ojaiwinefestival.com. Tickets at an added charge are available the day of the festival. I have one word of advice to those who attend: Enjoy!

22nd Ventura Music Festival Offers a Wide Variety of Acts It s still two months away, but it s not too early to make plans to attend the 22nd annual Ventura Music Festival. Festival Artistic Director Nuvi Mehta has put together another outstanding lineup of musical artists who will perform the weekends of July 15-17 and July 22-24 in venues in Ventura and Oxnard. Vadym Kholodenko, winner of the gold medal at the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, and Ute Lemper, known for her interpretations of Berlin cabaret songs, will be featured artists. Kholodenko will perform on July 16 and Lemper on July 17 at the Ventura College Performing Arts Center. But also mark down July 22. That s when legendary Brazilian composer and keyboardist Sergio Mendes, a three-time Grammy winner whose musical career has spanned over 50 years, performs at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center. Harrison Industries is proud to sponsor the concert by Mendes, who plays a unique blend of bossa nova crossed with jazz and funk. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2012 as co-writer of the song Real in Rio from the animated film Rio. Page 3 In addition, the festival s ever-popular Tea & Trumpets concerts featuring the Festival Brass Quintet will take place July 15 and July 22 at the Pierpont Inn. Sergio Mendes There s more, a whole lot more. For information on the festival s other performing acts or for tickets, go to www. venturamusicfestival.org or call 648-3146. Tickets also are available at the Ventura Music Festival office at 472. E. Santa Clara St. See you at the Ventura Music Festival! Garden Party Raises Funds for Ventura s Boys and Girls It was a beautiful day at the historic Olivas Adobe on April 30 when the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Ventura held its annual Garden Party fundraiser. Close to 200 guests enjoyed great music and good food, including a delicious barbecue lunch, beer, refreshments and desserts. The day also included an inspiring speech by Sarah Ruiz, the B&GCGV s Youth of the Year, and a fond farewell to Sam Navarro, who is joining the military after working at the organization s Robert Addison s Center for 10 years. Harrison Industries is a longtime sponsor of the Garden Party that raised $7,000 for Ventura s youth. Harrison President Ralph Harrison attended the fun-filled event with his wife Jenny, as did Harrison Sales Manager David Harrison, who brought along his sons Orion and Cameron. David serves on the B&GCGV s Board of Directors. The B&GCGV s next fundraiser is its 33rd annual Golf Classic on Aug. 8 at Saticoy Country Club. We ve reserved a table, and we hope to see you there! Boy Scouts 40th Annual Dinner Gala and Auction is June 10 The Ventura County Council of the Boy Scouts of America is holding its 40th annual Dinner Gala and Auction on June 10 at the Camarillo Ranch House. Ralph, Jim and Myron Harrison particularly enjoy sponsoring this fundraiser because they were all Boy Scouts and their father, company co-founder E.J. Harrison, was a Boy Scouts pack leader in Ventura 70 years ago. Did you know that The Ventura County Council of the Boy Scouts of America was officially chartered way back in 1921? The Boy Scouts of America is one of the largest youth organizations in the United States, with over 2.7 million youth members and over 1 million volunteers. Since its founding in 1910, more than 110 million American boys have been members. The BSA s goal is to train youth in responsible citizenship, character development and selfreliance through participation in a wide range of outdoor activities, educational programs, Continued on page 5

Camarillo Fiesta in Old Town Has Something for the Entire Family Summer s around the corner, so that means the Camarillo Fiesta & Street Fair is not far off. There will be plenty of music, food and fun for the whole family when the four-day Fiesta takes place July 7-10 in Old Town. There will be about 200 craft and food vendors, carnival rides, a farmers market and the popular Rotary Beer Garden. Special activities include a Carnival Special Dollar Day on Thursday night when all rides cost just $1, a Friday Night car cruise featuring classic automobiles, the opening of the Camarillo Street Fair on Saturday, and a classic car show on Sunday. Boys and girls will enjoy a Kids Fun Zone, pony and camel rides, and a petting zoo. Music acts will include tribute bands to Neil Diamond, the Rolling Stones, the British Invasion of the 1960s, David Bowie, the Eagles and the California sounds of the 1960s and 70s. Other acts will play jazz, country, bluegrass, mariachi, funk, reggae, blues, punk - you name it! The Camarillo High School band also will perform. For times and dates of all musical entertainment and other special events during the Camarillo Fiesta & Street Fair, go to www. camarillofiesta.com. The Camarillo Fiesta Association organizes and operates this fun-filled fair to showcase Old Town and raise money for nonprofits serving Camarillo-area residents. Harrison Industries will be in charge of waste collection. Please help us help the environment by placing trash and recyclables in the correct containers.
