Mike Spaid was also the first heavyweight All-American in school history. He has also seen two of his former wrestlers, Spaid and Mike Sees, both move into the top 10 all-time in school history in victories.under Stutzman s leadership, the Huskies have produced three Eastern Wrestling League champions. Stutzman started at Bloomsburg in 2002 as an assistant and helped lead the Huskies to 8-8 record after a one-win season the year before making it one of the best turnaround s ever. That year the Huskies also produced an EWL champ in George Carter. Known as a great recruiter, Stutzman s 2003 recruiting class ranked as high as 14th, nationally, by Intermat. That season, Stutzman also helped the Huskies to their first win over Edinboro since 1993. Prior to becoming the Huskies head coach in 2005, Stutzman spent two years as the recruiting coordinator at Northern Illinois. He helped the Huskies of NIU post two consecutive winning seasons withthe team s 2001-02 record of 14-4 being the most wins for the school since 1976. From 1998-2000, Stutzman served as the assistant coach at Buffalo helping coach the school s first Mid-American Conference champion. Buffalo qualified six wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in those three seasons and compiled a 19-10-2 record. A 1998 graduate of the University of Buffalo, Stutzman was 95-27 in a three-year career for the Bulls and left as the school s all-time leader in career wins. His best year for the Bulls was the 1996-97 season when he posted a mark of 35-4. He was a threetime East Coast Wrestling Association place winner and a two-time alternate for the Division I championships. 2008-09 Preview The sport of wrestling is unique. It is a one-on-one battle for seven minutes that most athletes could not or will not endure. It is a single-focus that drives both the athlete and their coaches to be best. For Bloomsburg University head coach John Stutzman it is that drive to be the best that motivates both he and his team each day as they go through grueling workouts striving to reach their ultimate goal a top 10 fi nish in the nation team. We are right this close to being where we want to as a program, said Stutzman holding his fi ngers just an inch apart from each other. The guys are working hard each and every day and now we have wrestlers who can compete with the best in the nation in many weight classes. We just need to put it all together. Leading a strong group of returning wrestlers is 157-pound All-American Matt Moley. Many folks would have been surprised by the junior s sudden rise to All-American status, but not Stutzman. He feels what Moley has achieved to date is just the tip of the iceberg as far as his potential goes. Matt can be a national champion if he wants because he is that good, said Stutzman. But our strength this year is that we have balance throughout our lineup. We have a quality wrestler at each weight class this year. If we wrestle to our capabilities then our goal is certainly achievable. If we stay healthy, catch a break or two along the way, then this could be a very special season for the Huskies and our fans, said Stutzman. 125 Ian Moser lead the way for the Huskies here at this weight. An EWL-wrestler of the week last year, Moser is already ranked in the top 20 in one national poll. Jeremiah Biddle, a transfer from Brockport State, and Matt Snyder a three-time PIAA state placewinner will back up at the weight. 133 Jason Guffey had a breakout year last year winning 21 matches. For him to go to the next level, he will need to be more consistent. Alex Lauffensburger, a spot starter last year, will back him up. 141 A deep weight class for the Huskies is led by former NCAA-qualifi er Rick Donald. A red-shirt year ago, Donald has lots of big-match experience and will be a key in the lower weights for Bloomsburg. Behind Donald are senior Darren Kern, Ian Del Sol, Kyle Vincelli, Frank Hickman will compete for time at this weight. 149 George Hickman gets the nod at this weight for the Huskies. A fi fth-year senior, Hickman has the potential be an NCAA-qualifi er. Behind Hickman are P.J. Barch, a former Delaware State Champ, and Josh Roosa. 157 Moley, the returning All-American, fi nished last season with a mark of 34-11. He took second at the EWL championship to earn his second straight berth to the NCAA championships where he turned in an eighth place performance. Moley is a wrestler with no fear and who hates to lose. Behind Moley will be Dennis Bermudez, and Dustin Tancredi giving the Huskies great depth at this weight. 165 Rick Schmelyun, who has won 54 matches in two seasons, returns as a starter at this weight. With more Schmelyun consistency he could make his fi rst trip to NCAAs. Behind 9 14394 BU Wrestling.indd 9 3/13/09 9:51:30 AM

2008-09 Preview Schmelyun will be Mike Wechsler, a two-time PIAA state placewinner from Northampton High School with Keith Hynson, a state champ from Delaware waiting in the wings. 174 Nate Graham, a former New York State champ, will start at this weight with Brian Shaw, a spot starter last year, competing for time. 184 Jesse Hasseman returns at this weight class. A fourth place fi nisher at the EWL championships a year ago, the coaching staff will be looking for more consistency out of him. Jake Dabushinky is the backup here. 197 Eric Shaw or Ryan Sutton will see time at this weight. Shaw was a spot starter and a fi fth place fi nished at EWL s last year, while Sutton is a former junior college All-American at Meramec College in St. Louis. 285 A new face at this weight after the graduation of former All-American Mike Spaid. Zac Walsh, who wrestles hard each match, will start with Eric Shaw the backup. There will be a dog-fi ght each and every night in this league, said Stutzman. Edinboro is loaded as is West Virginia and Pittsburgh. We will have our work cut out for us with those teams. I do think, though, we can make a run a title. What impresses me about our team is how hard the guys are working each and every day, Stutzman continued. They know our goals and they are working to get there. Overall, this is one of the best groups of guys I have ever worked with. Alongside Stutzman this year will be a new face as Scott Owen takes over the assistant s role. Owen is a former All-American at Northern Illinois and come to Bloomsburg after a few years at the United States Naval Academy. National Wrestling Hall of Fame The National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum held its annual induction ceremony on May 31st with former Bloomsburg University great Ricky Bonomo 92 one of the four inductees for 2008. Bonomo was the greatest wrestler in the history of Bloomburg University. For three straight years (1985-87), Bonomo won all of the major events on the schedule, capturing the NCAA Div. I title, along with the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) title and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) title at 118 pounds. He was named the EWL and PSAC Wrestler of the Year all three of those seasons. Ricky s career record was a stellar 116-12-3. Ricky and his brother Rocky were the first twins to win Pennsylvania state titles side-by-side in 36 years when they won Class AA titles for Lake Lehman High in 1981, wrestling for the legendary Floyd Shorty Hitchcock. Rocky was also an All-American for Bloomsburg, making the Bonomo brothers the most feared lightweight tandem in college wrestling at the time. Joining Bonomo in the 2008 inductee class were Mike Houck of Victoria, Minn.; Wayne Martin of Tulsa, Okla. (deceased)and Bobby Weaver of Easton, Pa. Eastern Wrestling League Since the Eastern Wrestling League was formed in 1976, Bloomsburg has enjoyed much success, both as a team, and individually. The Huskies won the team championship in 1981 and 1993 and has never placed lower than sixth. Individually, Bloomsburg wrestlers have compiled 34 titles. In addition to Bloomsburg, the league includes Clarion, Cleveland State, Edinboro, Lock Haven, Pittsburgh and West Virginia. Bloomsburg wrestlers hold three of the four fastest EWL tournament fall times. Heavyweight Mel Sharp holds the record with an 18-second pin in 1979, while Al McCollum, a 1982 title-winner, recorded a 36-second fall in 1981. In 1977, Leszek Radon pinned an opponent in 39 seconds.
