Dance Innovations FALL NEWSLETTER 2018 info@danceinnovations.com Miss Tammy and the staff of Dance Innovations would like to welcome everyone to the studio. For the new families, we know you will find a warm welcome from everyone here at the studio and to all of the returning families, welcome back. The 2018-2019 dance year will be better than ever. Whether it is your child s first try at pointing their toes or their first shuffle ballchange shuffle hop step, we know that dance is so much more than just learning steps. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your child s dance education and therefore life education. We are so happy that you have chosen to walk through our doors and to trust us with your child. Now off we go - to see where Shuffle Ballchange Shuffle Hop Step will lead us to this year!!.congratulations to our winner of the $30 dance credit LINDSAY ALLIN Thank you to all of those who shared our registration post and attended our Open House

LITTLE PEOPLE CORNER HALLOWEEN FUN During the week of October 24-30, the following classes will dress up in the favourite Halloween costume: Tuesday: Primary 1 Ballet Wednesday: Mini - Combo, PP Ballet Thursday: Creative Dance On Saturday, October 27, our Saturday classes (Combo, Pre-Junior Combo) will both combine from 9:30-11:30 so that we can bring you some Halloween Fun. Creative Dance students will come at their regular time. Dress up in your costume and be ready for tonnes of exciting activities.

A GROOMING REMINDER FOR BACK TO DANCE Dance is a special place and we ask that parents encourage their children to dress as if getting ready for a special place. This includes proper attire, shoes, and especially hair. We know as adults that when our hair is done with care and we are dressed for the occasion, we feel better. The same is true for a child. Please remember the following BALLET Please no ballet skirts except for Creative Dance, PP and Primary Ballet. Grade 1 and up please don t forget your character skirt and shoes. Hair should be in a bun for our girls Pre-Primary Ballet and up *Here is a little hint: use HAIR PINS rather than bobby pins. They work much easier. Please also use hairnets and hairspray for a polished look. JAZZ/TAP Suntan tights and royal / ink blue bodysuit are required for exams. We ask that all children in competitive classes wear these bodysuits / tights to their technique classes. Lululemon / Triple flip etc can be worn to Friday s supplement classes. Please no sweats or baggy clothing. Hair should be in a pony or bun using hairspray. Proper shoes for the genre. SUPPLEMENT CLASSES During supplement classes, we also work on Classical Technique. Children are asked to always wear either leggings or convertible tights so bare feet are available when necessary. Please note, if your child is running from one class to another, they do not need to change tights. It is fine to wear their hair in a bun as well for all classes.

INFORMATION REGARDING EXAMS Students in Junior 1, 2B, 3, PI1-3 and Senior Tap / Jazz as well as students in Grade 1,2,5,6 Senior and Primary 2 are currently preparing for exams. Our ADAPT Jazz and Tap exams are scheduled for November 24-25 and our RAD exams are TBA. Mock exams are set for November 4 or 12 for Primary 2 & G1-2 Ballet as well as Junior 1-3 and Pre-Inter 1 Jazz / Tap candidates. When selecting students for exams, instructors consider everyone on an individual basis and only select students who we feel are prepared to present their exam to their potential. It is important that students feel confident going into their exam and proud of their result. Having said that, we do encourage those who have been selected to present their exam, to participate. Examinations are a "goal setter". They are a memorable experience and present an opportunity for dance students to be critiqued and evaluated by professional dance master examiners yearly. The preparation through hard work helps build character and offers a student the opportunity to challenge themselves to be the best they can be. Exams are a part of the growing process in dance and as we always say, dance lessons = life lessons. Dance Innovations recently posted a great video on our Facebook Page regarding the benefits of exams. A good watch for students and parents! Please note, if your child is new to Dance Innovations or new to a specific genre of dance, they will not be asked to participate in exams to allow them time to get familiar to the new material. left: Last year s Primary students below: Intermediate Exam candidates Miss Madeline, Miss Emma and Miss Jennaya GOOD BETTER BEST NEVER LET IT REST UNTIL YOUR GOOD IS BETTER AND YOUR BETTER BEST - MS. Work Hard, Be a Good Person and Always Say You re Welcome This section of the newsletter will be dedicated to our Star Students as well as our special monthly team project. We know that dance isn't only about a shuffle ballchange but also teaches students skills on challenging oneself to work hard, being a team player, and being a good person. This month we are focusing on the health and well being of our dancers. Over the past few years, we have noticed the concept of stress in our pre-teens and teens increasing. Dance expectations have not changed & school expectations have not changed. We at the studio can t help noticing the correlation between this stress level and the increase in technology with our students. After all, being aware of how many people like you on social media is something we should not be concerned about, but are. Of course we are not scientists or physicians, but working with students for this many years, we cannot help but make some speculations. We have recommended a no cell phone rule 30 minutes before and after class and are also excited about our Refresh, Recharge and Run activity this coming weekend. Make sure you register your child 10+ for this event. A night surrounded by positive thoughts, positive energy, dance friends all finished off with a morning walk or run. What could be better for your tween / teen and even for our parents? COMPETITION / 202O TRIP MEETING Parents and students in Grade 2 and up Ballet as well as Junior 2 and up Jazz and Tap are invited to our competition meeting on Sunday, September 30 at 7:00pm All information regarding our competitions will be discussed at that time. Parents of Primary 2-G1 Ballet as well as Junior 1 families are invited to attend our meeting for 1st time competitors Wednesday, October 3 at 5:00pm COMPETITION DATES TO KEEP IN MIND ARE CURRENTLY ON THE SUMMARY OF IMPORTANT DATES ON THE BACK PAGE

MEMOS FROM THE OFFICE PARKING We understand that parking can be frustrating at times. Please work together to ensure everyone can drop off and pick up their child safely. Please respect the loading zone at the front of the studio. There are 3 spots available for students to drop off and pick up but only stay for 10 minutes please. If stopping across the street for drop off, please walk your child in. We had a close call last week that resulted in a phone call to the studio concerned for the students safety. If you are parking, please park down the street, in the parking lot across Smith, or in the back. Please do not park in the back if you cannot pull up to the front. If parents in a class work together, we can have 9 cars in the back parking lot, however, we have seen at times 3 vehicles take up the lot. DROP OFF AND PICK UP It is true that we love having all of the children at the studio, however, please understand that instructors and office staff are busy teaching other children both before and after their class. We would appreciate parents staying with their child in the lobby until they are called into class, and being at the studio on time to see their child come out of class. Children are supervised during their class time only. We also ask that students wait inside the studio for a parent. We do not feel that it is safe for students to sit out on the step in the evening. Please help us keep our DI students safe. FORMS AND FEES Please ensure all forms and fees are handed into the office on time. Often we must adhere to a deadline ourselves which makes it impossible to accept late entries. If Laurel is unavailable, please place in the white mailbox provided in the lobby. We are not responsible for forms and fees left on the desk. LAUREL S OFFICE HOURS: MONDAY - THURSDAY 3:30-6:00 CLASS CHANGES The studio is closed for Thanksgiving. There are, however, classes as scheduled on Saturday, October 6 and Tuesday, October 9. There will also be no regular classes on Wednesday, October 31st. Special Notes
