CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Pinehurst Chapter - American Singles Golf Association May 2008 President s Message "Golf is the cruelest game, because eventually it will drag you out in front of the whole school, take your lunch money and slap you around." ~Rick Reilly in "Master Strokes," from Sports Illustrated. We ve definitely had our April showers and are looking forward to May flowers, and greens and pars and..hopefully not being slapped around! Our busy schedule in April was a taste of things to come: as the weather improves we plan to be out on the courses or sampling the local restaurants with gusto! Thanks to Mikey for setting up last month s dinner meeting at Ashten s: their downstairs area is now available for private groups, and was perfect for both dining and the meeting! Please join us this month on the 8 th as we give Rhett s a try: once again we ll have the place to ourselves. Thanks to Mary Barnicoat for hosting the Masters party and to Mikey and Hollie for their cooking expertise! Great fun was had by all! Welcome to our newest members! Margee Anawalt, Ron Kelly, Patti Moffat, and Rich Williams. Attached to this newsletter is the entry form for the North South Challenge, this year being held in our back yard: Longleaf is the site for the actual Challenge, and Legacy is the site for a captain s choice tournament. We finished in third place last year, relinquishing the trophy won in 2006 to the Myrtle Beach chapter. Let s get it back this year! See you soon on the links! Live, laugh, love GOLF! ~Jean Peters, jeanlawsonpeters@nc.rr.com Golf Committee Report Golf Clinics Our golf clinics continue to be well attended. Our next clinic is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21 st where we will be practicing our short iron skills (8, 9, & PW). Due to the high turnout for these clinics Dale Briggs, Knollwood s Director of Golf, will try to provide a third instruc- tor for these clinics. In addition, because so many of our members are able to arrive early he or one of his instructors may start the some of the one-on-one portions of the clinic experience prior to the group lesson. For those of you who would like to receive more detailed help with your golf game please consider using Dale and his staff and their private instructions classes. Many of our members have benefited greatly from their lessons. 18 Hole Outings We have started the season with some bad luck when it comes to weather and our weekend outings. After false starts at Little River and at Hyland Hills over the past few weeks we were able to complete our first 18 hole outing on Sunday, April 20 th. Despite threatening skies and a few holes of driving rain most of the participants were able to complete their rounds. We had 22 people begin the round playing a best ball format with teams for 4 players. The social was held at Tripp s Restaurant following play. The following people were awarded Next Big Event: Reunion at Pinehurst, May 22-25. 400 ASGA members attended last year! On Thursday, April 17 th we played nine holes at Knollwood Golf Course and met for dinner afterwards at Giovanni s Pizzeria and Restaurant in Southern Pines. On Tuesday, April 29 th, we returned to the Southern Pines Country Club (Elk s Club) for the first time in awhile to play nine holes. 25 people signed up for golf and dinners to play one of the most improved courses in the Sandhills. Southern Pines CC has always featured a great Donald Ross layout but had fallen into disrepair lately. That is all in the past as we found the fairways lush and green, the tee boxes level and firm, and the greens fast and difficult. Despite an unseasonably cool evening everyone enjoyed the golf. Especially Dan: see the article below on his hole in one! Spring Weekend in Myrtle Beach There were 12 ASGA members who played 3 days of golf at Murrell s Inlet in Myrtle Beach, SC on April 25-27 th. The weather was perfect and the courses were in tiptop shape. Five members from Pinehurst and 7 members from the Triad Chapters enjoyed three days of camaraderie, golf and good food. We stayed at Ellington Villas at Wachesaw Plantation East. These condos were first rate and I would recommend you check them out for any individual plans you may have when golfing or vacationing in this area. Next planned weekend trip will be in early August with our Mountain Getaway Weekend. Details coming soon! Watch for your Evite. And all who attended dinner at The Bell Tree thank Dan for the drinks! Social Committee Report Hooray, hooray it s May! Get out your calendars, we have a lot of things planned. Our monthly meeting and dinner on May 8 th will be at Rhett s, 127 W. Pennsylvania

Avenue in Southern Pines. We will have the restaurant all to ourselves. The menu will be listed in the Evite so make sure to include your choice in your reply. After golf on May 10 th at the Carolina, golfers can gather at Squire s Pub on Route 1 in Aberdeen. Nine & Dine on the 15 th we can stay right where we play at Whispering Woods in their café. Thursdays is rib night for $10.95 (includes salad & 2 vegetables) or you can order off the menu. After golf on May 18 th at Foxfire let s go to Ironwood on Midland Road. On Sundays Ironwood has no corkage fee so bring your own wine. The clinics though well attended not all people go out to dine so on May 21 st we may just go back to Pine Needles for drinks and sandwiches. Service and food is good and it seems we have the bar just for us. Last on the calendar is May 30 th Nine & Dine at Longleaf so we will stay and enjoy dinner at the Paddock. As always it is important to RSVP for golf and dinner so the restaurants can be prepared for their tired and hungry golfers..that s us! ~Mikey Delle, Mikeydelle@nc.rr.com Communications Committee The calendar on our website has what events are coming up, so take a look at it once in a while for new events being added. www.pinehurst.singlesgolf.com Thanks again for responding to your Evites in a timely manner as it really helps Doug with pairings for golf outing and Mikey letting the restaurants know how many will be attending. Please call Doug s cell phone to let him know if you can t attend an outing at the last minute. If you need his number, please contact me and I will give it to you as it isn t on the roster. ~Hollie Thomson ASGAGolfpinehurst@nc.rr.com Other News Blue Jean Ball The annual Blue Jean Ball, for the benefit of the Cancer Care Foundation at First Health, is held this year on June 7 at the Fair Barn. Just for Laughs A young man and a priest are playing together. At a short par 3 the priest asks, "What are you going to use on this hole my son?" The young man says, "An 8 iron, father. How about you?" The priest says, "I'm going to hit a soft seven and pray." The young man hits his 8 iron and puts the ball on the green. The priest tops his 7 iron and dribbles the ball out a few yards. The young man says, "I don't know about you father, but in my church when we pray, we keep our head down."

After Pinehurst, Look Forward to These Trips ASGA, through its member chapters, offer other events which allow you to meet singles from other chapters. All members are invited and encouraged to attend these Multi-Chapter Events. There s nothing like meeting up with a bunch of other singles for a weekend of golf. Each package is basically the same but there are differences, so we suggest you visit the website for the event. And, if you re chapter s interested in hosting one of these events, prepared to put a lot of work into it. But the reward of having singles play in your city and play your favorite courses is a life experience, well, hopefully! Contact ASGA to clear the date and then get your Board of Directors to give local approval. Then, start putting it together! It s real easy; just follow the simple instructions and we ll send it to you. Do We Sell Our Mailing List? Absolutely not. We get asked this question from time to time because people get unsolicited mail and e-mails from others thinking it might have come from us. Since Day One, we ve made it a policy not to sell, trade, barter, give-away or any in way pass along your information to others. Likewise, we ask that members refrain from using their chapter s roster for non-asga related solicitations, mailings, jokes, etc. We all get enough e-mail. Please don t assume everyone wants to read your anecdotes or any other type of dote. - - Tom Alsop, President/Founder, ASGA Phone 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE GolfASGA@aol.com
