BBC Young Dancer 2017 We want to give everyone a chance. We would like dancers who are deaf and disabled to take part. The competition is open dancers aged 16-21. For deaf and disabled dancers the age limit is 16-25. We will be able to pay for some of the support you may need to take part in the competition. We will pay reasonable travel expenses for you and your dance partner if you are bringing one. There are 4 categories: Ballet Contemporary South Asian Dance Street Dance 4
If you are under 18 years of age we need your parent or guardian to sign that they have given their permission. You must live in the UK. You must not be: A professional dancer. Closely related to any BBC staff. There will be 3 competitive rounds. Dancers will be judged on technical command, creative and expressive ability. The final will be at Sadler s Wells. 5
How to apply You need to: Complete the entry form Enclose a copy of your birth certificate or passport A Email photo of you a link where we can see a video of you dancing Or post 2 copies of the video on a memory stick or DVD You must get your entry form to us by Sunday 2 October. 6
The video should be no longer than 6 minutes and be of you dancing 2 different dances. We will look at all the videos and decide who will go through to the second round. 80 dancers will go to the second round. We will email you within a week to let you know that your application has arrived safely. If you don t receive an email from us - please get in touch. 7
The second round The second round will take place in October/November 2016. You should prepare two solo dances. Each should be between 1 minute 30 seconds and 4 minutes long. 5 dancers from each category will go through to the category finals. That means that 20 dancers will go to the category finals. The second round will be filmed and may be used on the television. 8
Category finals The category finals will take place in January 2017. Five dancers in each category will perform in front of an audience and a panel of judges. The category finals will be filmed and shown on BBC Four. The winner of each category will receive a specially-commissioned trophy, and 1000 to help support and further their dance studies. They will also go on to take part in the BBC Young Dancer Grand Final. 9
Workshops If you are chosen to be in the category finals you will go to workshops with famous dancers and teachers. You will work through and develop your dances at the workshops. This will be in early January 2017. If you are chosen to be in the Grand Final you will work with a professional choreographer in March/April 2017. The choreographer is the person who makes up the dance. They will create a new solo dance for you to perform at the Grand Final. 10
Grand Final The Grand Final will take place on the main stage at Sadler s Wells in London in front of an audience and a panel of professional dancers who are known all over the world. The Grand Final will be filmed for broadcast on BBC Two. Finalists will dance a total of 4 dances in the Grand Final. This will include a solo and a pas de deux / duet. These can be the same as have been performed previously, or they can be new ones. This part of the programme should not last more than 9 minutes. 11
Finalists will also dance the new solo they have created with a professional choreographer. All of the finalists will also perform in a short group piece together, created specifically for the Grand Final. This will not be assessed by the judging panel. The winner will be awarded the title of BBC Young Dancer 2017, a prize of 3000 to help support and further their dance studies and a specially commissioned trophy. 12
