RADIO: ESPN 103.3 FM and KTCU 88.7 FM in Fort Worth/Dallas Brian Estridge (play-by-play) and Herb Stephens (analyst) will call the game on the TCU/ESPN Sports Network. The broadcast also can be heard online at www.gofrogs.com. THE SERIES: TCU leads the all-time series 3 games to 2. WHAT S NEXT: A TCU first-round victory would mean that the Horned Frogs would advance to the quarterfinals of the C-USA Tournament to face top-seeded Louisville, who had a first round bye, at noon on Thursday. Setting the Scene For the second consecutive year, the TCU Horned Frogs (18-12, 8-8 C-USA) and Marquette Golden Eagles (19-10, 7-9) meet in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament. Last year, the Golden Eagles were the eighth seed and TCU was the No. 9, while this season the schools have flip-flopped positions. TCU has won three straight games against Marquette, including a 63-62 decision in Fort Worth exactly one month ago. TCU is attempting to reach a postseason tournament for the first time since the crew advanced to the NIT in 1999. The Horned Frogs are just 4-9 away from home this season, but 1-0 on neutral courts. Series History TCU owns a slim 3-2 advantage in the all-time series after the Horned Frogs edged the Golden Eagles 63-62 on Feb. 9 in Fort Worth. Last year, TCU upset the NITbound Eagles 85-79 on Feb. 3 in Milwaukee, then ousted Marquette from the Conference USA Tournament by a 64-62 count on Mar. 10 in Cincinnati. It was the first league tournament victory for the Horned Frogs since 2000. In all, the Frogs have TCU vs. Marquette Game-By-Game Jan. 23, 2002 L 72-83 Milwaukee Feb. 22, 2003 L 68-79 Fort Worth Feb. 3, 2004 W 85-79 Milwaukee Mar. 10, 2004 W 64-62 Cincinnati Feb. 9, 2005 W 63-62 Fort Worth won three straight games in the series, but by just a total of nine points. The two schools had not met prior to becoming C-USA league partners in 2002. Marquette won each of the first two meetings, one in Milwaukee and one in Fort Worth, by 11 points apiece. TCU Individuals vs. Marquette Corey Santee has averaged 12.2 points, 5.0 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game in five meetings against the Golden Eagles. Santee was the hero in both of TCU s wins in 2004, scoring a total of six points in the final 30 seconds at Marquette, and the final four in the last minute in the conference tournament. Aaron Curtis scored a career-high 15 points at Marquette in TCU s upset victory last year and has averaged 9.7 points over three games. Marcus Shropshire has posted 16.0 points per game in three outings on 13-of-30 (.433) shooting from 3-point range. Marcus Sloan has averaged 4.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in his last two outings versus the Eagles, while Femi Ibikunle has averaged 2.0 points and 4.7 rebounds in three games. Nile Murry tossed in 15 points in his first career try this past February. The Most Recent Meeting vs. Marquette (Box Score Below) Marcus Shropshire buried a 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining to give the Horned Frogs a thrilling 63-62 victory over the Marquette Golden Eagles on Feb. 9. TCU forced a turnover by Dameon Mason before Marquette could attempt a game-winning shot. It was the second straight meeting between the two teams that went down to the wire and resulted in a game-winning shot by TCU in the final 10 seconds. Shropshire led the Frogs with 17 points, and was joined in double figures by Nile Murry (15) and Corey Santee (12). Marquette outrebounded TCU by a 34-23 count, but the Frogs forced 19 MU turnovers. Marquette owned a 10-1 home record at the time and had won 41 of their last 43 in the Bradley Center over the last three years prior to the Frogs win. Before TCU, the only teams to leave Milwaukee with a W in the last three years were then-no. 2 Louisville (73-70) on Feb. 15, 2003 and thenseventh-rated Cincinnati (85-73) on Jan. 14, 2004. Then in the Conference USA Tournament, the Horned Frogs earned the program s 1000th victory with a 64-62 triumph after Corey Santee sanka high-arcing floater with 8.1 seconds remaining. It was the Frogs first conference tournament win since 2000, when the school was in the Western Athletic Conference. Neil Dougherty Head Coach 3rd Year Division I Coach 20th Year Is the 18th head basketball coach in school history and is in his third year at TCU. Has an overall record of 39-48 in his first three seasons with the Horned Frogs, including a 18-30 mark in the highly competitive Conference USA. Has improved the Frogs win total to 18 this year, up from 12 in 2003-04 and nine in 2002-03. Is looking to take TCU to the postseason for the first time since the Frogs advanced to the NIT in 1999. In 2003-04, led the school to its first victory over a top-10 team since 1990 and first league tourney win since 2000. In 2004, the Horned Frogs went 7-9 in Conference USA, which was one of just four leagues in the nation to receive six bids to the 2004 NCAA Tournament. Led TCU to a 25-point win over No. 10 Louisville, just the school s fifth top-10 win ever. Held Louisville to just 46 points, the lowest output by a Rick Pitino team since his Boston University squad was defeated 48-46 by Canisius in 1982. Last year, became just the third team in three seasons, and the first not rated in the nation s top 10, to win a game against Marquette in Milwaukee, Wis. Has played 13 top-25 teams in 87 games after TCU played just seven top-25 teams from 1998-99 through 2001-02, a span of 124 games. Was named the best-dressed coach in college basketball by CollegeInsider.com in the 2004 Runway to the Fashionable Four. Spent seven seasons at Kansas as an assistant coach under Roy Williams. KU averaged nearly 30 wins per season, earned four conference championships and made one Final Four appearance. Was recruited by and played one year at Army for legendary Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski. Received his undergraduate degree from Cameron University (B.A., 1984) and his master's degree from the University of Oklahoma (M.S., 1987). Dougherty and his wife, Patti, have three children: daughter, Megan, and sons, Neil and Ryan. Neil is a sophomore guard for the Horned Frogs. Thinkin Bout Postseason TCU is looking to make its first postseason tournament appearance since the 1998-99 season, which was capped off by a showing in the 1999 NIT. That year, the Frogs finished the campaign with a 21-11 record and reached the third round of the NIT after victories over Kansas State and Nebraska. TCU was upended by Oregon just one game prior to reaching the NIT semifinals in New York City. TCU s lone trip to the NCAA Tournament over the past 18 seasons came in 1998. Planting the Seed This is the highest seed that TCU has earned in the Conference USA Tournament since the school joined the league in 2002. TCU s previous best was a No. 9 achieved last year. Prior to that, the Horned Frogs were the No. 10 seed in 2002. TCU s Conference USA Tournament History TCU has played in just two Conference USA Tournaments previously, as the team did not qualify for the 2003 postseason tournament. In 2002, the 10th-seeded Horned Frogs suffered a 110-86 defeat in the opening round to seventhseeded Louisville. Last year, No. 9 TCU defeated No. 8 Marquette by a 64-62 count in the first round of the tournament for the school s first league tourney win since 2000. In the quarterfinals, TCU was downed by DePaul, who reached the C-USA championship game, by an 89-64 result. The final score was not indicative of the game, which was an eight-point contest with 7:21 to play before a 21-5 DePaul run to end the game. TCU s All-Time Conference Tournament History Since conference tournament play began for the Southwest Conference in 1976, TCU owns an all-time postseason tourney record of 22-33 (.407). TCU was 16-25 in the SWC, went 5-5 in the Western Athletic Conference and is 1-2 in Conference USA action. Prior to last year s triumph over Marquette, TCU s previous postseason win came in 2000, when the Horned Frogs defeated WAC foe San Jose State 84-71 on Mar. 9 in Fresno, Calif. TCU has never won a conference tournament title and has played in the championship game just twice. The last time TCU advanced to the final game of a league tournament was in 1997 when the Horned Frogs suffered an 89-68 loss to Utah on Mar. 8, 1997, in Las Vegas, Nev. Delivering in FedExForum TCU has played just one game in Memphis FedExForum, but had a successful outcome as the Horned Frogs upset the Memphis Tigers, 61-59, on Jan. 15. With the game tied at 58 with 5.1 seconds left, TCU s Corey Santee received an inbounds pass, dribbled it down court and hit a running 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds remaining to lift TCU. The Horned Frog bench received a technical foul for leaving the bench area and celebrating prematurely. Memphis hit 1 of 2 free throws, but Memphis couldn't get a shot off in the final 0.2 seconds. TCU, which had never beaten Memphis in nine previous meetings, fell behind 5-0 before going on a 17-5 run to take control of the game until the closing minutes. The Horned Frogs persevered despite shooting 33.3 percent and squandering a 12-point second-half lead. Looking to Accomplish Big Things TCU is just two wins away from its first 20-win season since the 2000-01 campaign (20-11). TCU has posted a total of 10 20-win seasons in the school s basketball history. TCU has had at least 18 wins six times in the past 13 years. Up to 18 On March 2 against USF, TCU recorded its 18th victory of the season, which is already six more than last year s win total of 12 and double the 2002-03 figure of nine. TCU s 18 victories are the most since the 2000-01 season, when the team went 20-11. In the past 13 seasons, TCU has won more than 18 games just four times. Close Encounters For the Seventh Time Seven TCU games this season have been decided by six points or less and the Frogs have a 3-4 mark in those contests. In the three years under Neil Dougherty, 28 games have been decided by six or fewer points. TCU is 11-17 in those games, but 10-9 in the past two years after going 1-8 in the first season. After falling to Southern Miss by a 66-64 count on Mar. 5, TCU is now to 7-6 all time under Neil Dougherty in games decided by three points or less. After suffering defeats in three of the first four one-possession games under Coach D, the Horned Frogs have been victorious in six of their last nine games that have been determined by three or less and have won four of the last six. Down to the Wire Four TCU games during the Conference USA season came down to shots in the final 8 seconds of the game. TCU In Tight Games TCU is 5-6 in games decided by 10 points or less this season. The Horned Frogs had four tough league road losses, falling by eight points at Saint Louis, seven at Charlotte and just two at DePaul and Southern Miss. Just one of TCU s last six games has been determined by fewer than 10 points after six of the previous eight games were single-digit contests. 2004-05 TCU Storylines Remembering Molly Hesselbrock - A Purple Angel On Monday, Feb. 21, the TCU family suffered a tragic loss when Molly Hesselbrock, the daughter of longtime Associate Athletics Director Jack Hesselbrock and TCU alum Angie Hesselbrock, lost her courageous battle with cancer. The 14-year-old known for her infectious smile, positive attitude, love of family and ability to dance was diagnosed with non-hodgkin s lymphoma eight months ago. Due to an overwhelming number of community members wishing to attend the memorial service, TCU Chancellor Victor J. Boschini offered the use of Daniel- Meyer Coliseum for the service, which took place on Friday, Feb. 25, and was attended by more than 2,000 people. TCU wears a patch on the team s uniforms with the letters MH in her honor. About Chudi s Knee On Monday, Dec. 13, TCU head coach Neil Dougherty confirmed that a left knee injury sustained by junior forward Chudi Chinweze would force him to miss the remainder of the season. Chinweze s injury occurred with 3:08 remaining in the game at Kansas on Dec. 9. Through eight games, Chinweze was leading the team in rebounding (6.9 rpg) and ranked third on the team in scoring (11.1 ppg). A Lot on the Line The TCU Horned Frogs have been to the charity stripe 791 times in 30 games and their trips per game average of 26.4 ranks second in the league, behind only Cincinnati (27.4). The bad news is that the Frogs have struggled converting the shots this season, shooting a league-low 59.0 percent (467-for-791). TCU has gone to the line an average of 29.6 times in its victories compared to 21.5 trips in defeats. TCU Statistically Among Conference USA (All Games) Category Avg. Home Was Where the Wins Were TCU finished with a 14-3 mark at home this season, which were the most home victories in a year since the 2000-01 squad went 15-1 in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Since the building s opening in 1961, TCU has amassed a 370-214 (.634) record at home. Over the past 11 seasons, TCU s homecourt advantage has been even more pronounced, as the Frogs have posted an overall home mark of 132-44 (.750). TCU s 14 home wins rank tied for the third most in school history. Have Ball, Will Play Cincinnati was the 13th ranked opponent that TCU has played in Coach Dougherty s 87 games at the helm of the program (1 per every 6.7 games). Prior to his arrival, the Horned Frogs played just seven ranked teams from the 1998-99 season through the 2001-02 campaign, a span of 124 games (1 per every 17.7 games). During the entire decade of the 1990s, TCU competed against just 19 ranked teams in 303 games (1 per every 15.9 games). TCU is 1-12 against top-25 teams under Dougherty. All-Time Against the Top 25 The TCU Horned Frogs are 11-85 (.115) all time against teams ranked in the nation's top 25 and 0-3 this season after an 89-74 loss to No. 24 Cincinnati on Feb. 26. TCU is 10-40 (.200) against top-25 teams in Fort Worth after dropping the game to the Bearcats. You Gotta Know When to Hold Em TCU is holding opponents to 67.5 points per game, which is the lowest figure since the 1991-92 squad limited teams to 66.3 points per contest. In addition, the Horned Frogs are forcing opponents into just 42.4 percent shooting, which is the lowest percentage allowed since the 1989-90 team (42.2 percent). What Have You Done For Me Lately? Since starting out the 2003-04 season with a 4-8 record, the Horned Frogs have gone 25-21 (.543). Included in that mark are a trio of wins over Marquette, a 25-point upset victory over 10th-ranked Louisville during the 2004 Conference USA season, a 15-point victory over Texas Tech this fall, a road win this season at Memphis and a home victory over UAB. Not Really Starting at the Beginning In addition to possessing players with multiple years of experience in the Neil Dougherty system, the Horned Frogs also boast a bevy of players who own collegiate starting experience. Here is a list of the 10 Frogs who have started a total of 407 games at the Division I level: Corey Santee (108), Marcus Shropshire (60), Femi Ibikunle (57), Corey Valsin (55), Nile Murry (48), Marcus Sloan (40), Chudi Chinweze (31), Aaron Curtis (11), Art Pierce (1) and Brent Reese-Hackett (1). A Balancing Act The Horned Frogs have shown depth and balance in points and rebounds this year. Through 30 games, TCU has been led in scoring by six different players: Corey Santee (11 times), Nile Murry (8 times), Marcus Shropshire (7 times), Judson Stubbs (2 times), Aaron Curtis (1 time) and Chudi Chinweze (1 time). In addition, nine Frogs have paced the team on the glass: Femi Ibikunle (8 times), Chinweze (5 times), Marcus Sloan (5 times), Aaron Curtis (4 times), Stubbs (4 times), Murry (3 times), Art Pierce (1 time), Shropshire (1 time) and Santee (1 time). A Little Bracketology Seven TCU opponents are picked to advance to the 2005 NCAA Tournament according to Joe Lunardi s most recent Bracketology report on ESPN.com (Mar. 7). Lunardi s current tourney teams on the Frogs 2004-05 schedule and their predicted seeds include: #2 Kansas, #3 Louisville, #6 Charlotte, #6 Cincinnati, #9 Texas Tech, #10 DePaul and #12 Old Dominion. TCU is currently 1-6 against those teams, but played four of the games on the road. In addition, Horned Frog foes YAB and Vanderbilt appear on the Last Four Out and Next Four Out lists. Enjoying Home Cookin TCU is giving up 73.9 points per away contest as compared to just 62.5 points per home game. Grambling State, Memphis and Cincinnati are the only three of the 17 visitors to break the 70-point plateau against the Horned Frogs in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum this season, while seven of the 13 teams have scored at least 70 on the Frogs in games played outside Fort Worth. Opponents are shooting 5.4 percent poorer against TCU at DMC this year (40.1 percent vs. 45.5 percent). The Horned Frogs are 14-3 at home this season and 4-9 outside Fort Worth. TCU still has one scholarship available for the 2005 class. Dallas Hunter, a 6-5, 200-pounder, averaged 18.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.5 blocks as a junior at Plano East High School. Hunter is rated as the No. 18 prospect in Texas by Mike Kundstadt s Texas Basketball Review. In addition, local product Clarence Masters (Cedar Hill, Texas/Cedar Hill H.S.) has inked with the Horned Frogs. Masters, 6-5, 200, is rated 38th in the state according to Texas Basketball Magazine. He helped Cedar Hill to a 35-2 record and a runner-up finish at state in Class 5A last year. Aliou Kane, a 6-10, 245-pounder who is currently a sophomore at Collin County Community College, will have two seasons in Fort Worth. He played one year for Minnesota of the Big 10, averaging 0.5 points and 0.6 rebounds in 17 games. Another big man joining the Frogs will be 6-9, 270-pound Allen Taylor of Irmo, S.C. He was an all-state player as a junior after averaging 20 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots. Commitment to Hoops Since Neil Dougherty was named head coach, TCU s facilities have received major upgrades. Inside Daniel-Meyer Coliseum, TCU has built a new locker room (Summer of 2002), installed a new playing floor (Summer of 2003) and upgraded its lighting system (Summer of 2004). In addition, the school completed work on the Ed & Rae Schollmaier Basketball Complex in April of 2004. The Schollmaier Basketball Complex is a $5 million facility which features two full-length practice courts, a basketballonly weight room, coaches offices, coaches locker rooms, conference rooms, a lobby and a courtyard. Playing With a Full Deck For the first time since taking over the TCU program in 2002, head coach Neil Dougherty has a full complement of 13 scholarship players at his disposal. TCU had been handcuffed by the 5-8 scholarship rule over the past two years. TCU finally would have been at full scholarship strength this year even before the NCAA voted to get rid of the 5-8 rule, which allowed a maximum of five scholarship student-athletes in one year and a maximum of eight over two seasons. Congraduations Marcus and Marcus Two TCU senior basketball players were awarded their diplomas from TCU Chancellor Victor J. Boschini, Jr. in December. Marcus Shropshire earned a Bachelor s degree in General Studies and is currently pursuing a Master s in Liberal Arts, while Marcus Sloan was awarded his Bachelor s in Speech Communication. Staying Close to Home Of the 15 players on this year s roster, 12 hail from Texas, which is up from six just two years ago. Of the 12 players who have come to TCU since Dougherty arrived, 10 are from within state borders. Senior-ity TCU has a five-person senior class in 2004-05, with three of the members (Corey Santee, Marcus Sloan and Corey Valsin) on their way to being four-year letterwinners. Since 1980, TCU has had just 21 players earn four varsity letters for the Horned Frogs. TCU s other seniors include Marcus Shropshire, who transferred from Texas Tech, and Aaron Curtis, who transferred from Lon Morris J.C.

The Line Between Winning and Losing In TCU s 18 victories, the opposition is just 391-for-1013 (.386) from the field, but in the Frogs 12 losses, teams have shot 48.3 percent (316-for-654). The Horned Frogs are scoring 10.1 points per game higher when the team wins (75.1 vs. 65.0) and are allowing 15.2 more points per game in losses (76.6 vs. 61.4). More on the Line TCU s free throw percentage of.590 is the lowest by a Horned Frog team since the 1967-68 squad went 415-for-810 (.512). TCU has not shot lower than 60 percent from the stripe since the 1992-93 season (.595). Excluding the Frogs top two free throw shooters, Marcus Shropshire and Nile Murry, who are a combined 140-for-168 (.833), the rest of the team is just 327-for-623 (.525). If You Come to a Fork in the Road, Take It TCU, 2-6 this year in league road matchups, finished 7-25 (.219) all time in Conference USA road contests since joining the league in 2002. TCU s wins are over UAB and Tulane in 2002; Houston, Marquette and USF in 2004; and Memphis and Tulane in 2005. TCU has had just one.500 or better league road record in the past 12 seasons, owning a 31-66 record (.320) over that time. Top Guns TCU senior Corey Santee (225) is the fourth TCU player ever to make 200 career three-pointers. He now trails only Ryan Carroll (233) and Michael Strickland (231) after surpassing former teammate Bingo Merriex (217) against Tulane on Feb. 23. Teammate Marcus Shropshire has made 150 threes in just two seasons to scoot into eighth place on the school s all-time list. Breaking Down TCU Wins and Losses Wins (18) Losses (12) Total (Avg.) Santee now owns 560 assists in 118 career games (4.7 assists per game). Santee also ranks second in career steals at TCU with 148. Against USF, he scored five points to move past Carven Holcombe (1,734) into second place on the school s all-time scoring list. In addition to his rankings in school history, the senior will finish his career among the top 10 in Conference USA history in both categories (he is currently sixth in points and third in assists). He had his 78-game starting streak snapped on Jan. 19 against Houston due to an illness, but after rolling out of bed just before tipoff, he got dressed and entered the game immediately with 9:35 remaining in the first half. Santee led the Horned Frogs to victory after posting 10 points in 23 minutes of work in a 58-51 victory. The Nile Isn t Just a River in Egypt TCU junior transfer Nile Murry has started 28 games this season, and currently ranks second on the team in scoring (12.6). Murry garnered his first career double double against USF when he led the team in both points (19) and rebounds (10). Over the past two games, he has averaged 14.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per contest. Earlier this year, he poured in 26 points against Grambling State, a figure that matched the best individual game by a Frog player this season (Santee 26 vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi). His only bigger career game came his freshman season at Temple, when he scored 33 vs. Fordham. TCU s Shrop Shooter TCU senior guard Marcus Shropshire currently ranks third on the team in scoring at 11.9 points per game. He has made at least three 3-pointers in five straight and eight of his last nine ball games. Shropshire is 56-for-61 (.918) from the free throw line and has made 104 of his last 111 (.937) from the charity stripe dating back to last year. He had made 31 consecutive attempts until missing the front end of a 1-and-1 against Memphis on Jan. 29. Who Turned on the A.C.? Senior forward Aaron Curtis has averaged 8.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game over his last 20 contests after posting 4.6 points and 2.9 rebounds per game over the Frogs first 10 games. Curtis has reached double figures in points seven times over the past 21 games after reaching that mark just twice in his first 39 contests in purple. He had 13 points and a career-high nine rebounds at DePaul and 11 points and eight boards vs. UAB, narrowly missing his first career double-doubles. He netted a career-high 22 points against Cincinnati on Feb. 23, easily breaking his previous high of 15 set last year at Marquette.
