Eagle Express S A Y D E L A C T I V I T I E S D E P A R T M E N T Cross Country 0 7 / 1 1 / 2 0 1 4 The Saydel Cross Country season is well underway and it is shaping up to be a very successful one for the Eagles! The Eagles return multiple letter winners from last year's boys and girls teams, including team MVPs Casey Roberts and Lyndsay Bianchi. The girls team is lead by returning seniors Gabby Richards and Emma Bowman. Also returning are letter winners Cassie Chubb, April Knight, Jordan Johnson and Lyndsay Bianchi. Newcomers to the team this year include Mackenzie Pyles, Ada Miklus and Jayda Tolentino. Emma mentioned, "I'm really excited for another year of XC. We have a great team and always make tons of great memories." The boys team only loses one senior from last year's team and brings back senior and 2013 state cross country meet participant Casey Roberts. Casey noted, "We've been putting a lot more miles in per week to start the season this year, which is going help us a lot down the road. It will make the races feel shorter." Also returning to the team are letter winners David Parker, Joey Hassett, Justin Roepsch, Alex Scott, and Kole Walker, and Joe Smith. The team adds a group of hard working athletes this year as well, including Cody Boozell, Josh Green, Nathan Nelson and Zach McKee Each year the team has grown larger and stronger. Now at 20 runners between the two teams, Saydel Cross Country is looking to improve and make more and more strides toward a Heart of Iowa Conference Championship, alongside numerous individual goals as well. Find the Saydel Cross Country Schedule at www.heartofiowaconference.org. Runners pictured from left to right: Front: Emma Bowman, April Knight. Second row: David Parker, Nathan Nelson, Zach McKee, Joe Smith, Lyndsay Bianchi, Mackenize Pyles. Back: Casey Roberts, Josh Green, Cody Boozell, Alex Scott, Justin Roepsch, Kole Walker, Gabby Richards, Cassie Chubb, Jordan Johnson, Joey Hassett. Not pictured: Ada Miklus, Jayda Tolentino.

S A Y D E L A C T I V I T I E S D E P A R T M E N T P A G E 2 FOOTBALL The 2014 football season is nearly here and the Eagles are preparing daily to take the field. Next Friday the Eagles host Clarke in the first game in the newly remodeled Saydel Stadium. Last year the Eagles and Indians played a hard fought game that ended with a Saydel win. The Eagles look to start the season off on the right foot with another victory over Clarke. Saydel returns a number of players this season that saw significant time last year. The Eagle offense brings back over 1,500 yards of offense along with 16 touchdowns. Seniors Clayton Sommers, Grant Sherman, Zach McBride, and underclassman Jacob Philipsen, Dylan Coffin, and Devin Porter all bring offensive skill position experience back to the Eagles. Up front the O-line returns Tanner Newell and Brandon Hill to a group that saw great improvement from a year ago. The Eagles will need to continue the improvement if they want to build upon a drastically better offensive performance last season. Defensively the Eagles spent many hours this summer implementing a new defensive scheme. The Eagles look to improve on this side of the ball as seven of last year s top ten tacklers return, including senior Marshall Anderson who moves from linebacker to the secondary, joining fellow senior Corey Denning. The Eagles lost a key weapon from a year ago in the leg of punter/kicker Jake Sherman. Younger brother Grant Sherman is hoping to duplicate the efforts that earned Jake All-State and All-American honors last season. The Eagles will need these efforts to continue to change the field position during the game in their favor. This season looks to be exciting as many Eagles compete for playing time. An athletic group of underclassmen look to push their older teammates. In addition, the opening of a new stadium with turf, press box, bleachers and sound system, make this season one worth checking out. Go Eagles!! E A G L E E X P R E S S

VOLLEYBALL This 2014 season is looking very promising! We have 11 returning seniors with many games under their belt! Finally this year we have a team with great chemistry and good attitudes! All summer we have been putting forth the effort to rebuild the volleyball program here at Saydel, and with myself being a new coach here believe this is going to be the start of something new! I am so excited to be coaching this group of girls at the high school level, they are showing growth each and every day in the weight room, with speed and agility drills. We are sure to turn heads this year and reconstruct the volleyball mentality in our community! We would love to see packed stands cheering all these girls on during this season! Our first home game is September 4th, hope to see you there!

CHEERLEADING The cheerleaders have been practicing and getting ready to fire up the Eagle fans at our first game against Clarke. There are 18 girls on the squad. Most of the girls are returning cheerleaders with lots of experience. We have a few new ones that are working hard to know the many cheers that will be performed. The girls have many ideas to make this a great football season for all! Trivia Question: How many SENIORS are on the Cheerleading Squad? (See Answer on Last Page)
