Downey Fly Fishers January 2014 Newsletter Join us for our January Program: Fly-Fishing the Seychelles By: Ray Sugiyama Upcoming Events Jan 14 Club Meeting featuring Ray Sugiyama Feb 21 Board Meeting at Hof s Hut Feb 8 Fly Fishing Film Tour at the District in Tustin hosted by the Calico Syndicate Feb 8 Fly Buy at LBCC hosted by the FFF SEYCHELLES One of the greatest fly fishing destinations on earth This month's program will feature DFF member Ray Sugiyama's trip to the Seychelles, a group of islands and atolls in the Indian Ocean, east of Kenya and below India. Ray went by himself taking an 18 hour flight from LAX to Dubai, then another 4 hour flight from Dubai to Mahe which is the capital of the Seychelles. His final destination was Farquhar Atoll, 2 more hours from Mahe. Ray met three fly fishers from Redding, California on the trip. One of them was Michael Caranci who works in the Travel Center of the Fly Shop. Michael is also Director of Research and has led many groups to study the Steelhead and Trout in Russia. A group of eight fly fishers from South Africa were also on the trip. The group caught 34 different species of fish during the week from small reef fish to large tuna, Sailfish and many species of grouper. While wading and fishing for bonefish with his 9 wt rod, Ray spotted, hooked and landed a record Bump Head Parrot fish that weighed 80 pounds. Ray photographed many of the fish he and the group caught and will present a very interesting Power Point presentation you will not want to miss at the January meeting.

For more information or to register for the class, contact Tim Lawson by phone at (323) 303-7438 or by e-mail at tlawson11@hotmail.com. The cost for the four class series is $65.00 for IFFF members and $85.00 for non-members. A California Department of Fish and Wildlife Newsletter Welcome to the latest edition of Eye on Invasives, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's newsletter dedicated to providing the public with new and important information about invasive species in California. As you may have noticed, we have changed the way you receive our newsletter, which can now be accessed here: https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/filehandler.ashx?documentversionid=124125. This issue of Eye on Invasives focuses on invasive species issues in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. Inside, you will find a Research Spotlight article by Evyan Borgnis and Dr. Katharyn Boyer of the Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies, San Francisco University, discussing the potential impacts of climate change on native and invasive pondweeds in the Delta. This issue also features a Partner Spotlight article on the Aquatic Weed Control Program implemented by the Boating and Waterways Division of the California Department of Parks and Recreation. We hope you enjoy reading our latest issue, and encourage you to share it with others who may be interested in learning about California's invasive species and their impacts. We also welcome suggestions on invasive species related topics for future editions, which may be submitted toinvasives@wildlife.ca.gov.
