August 2005 www.cowtownmopars.com The Starting Line Newsletter for Cowtown Mopars Performance Team Instead of reporting the routine monthly minutes, I'd like to report to you two events that I attended this past month. One was the Great Texas Balloon Races held in Longview, the other the annual W.P.C. Club National Meet held in Burbank, California. The Great Texas Balloon Races is an annual event held on the second/third weekend in July. Over 75 registered crews attended with a grand prize of $10,000. To anyone able to ring the pole, in addition to the other competition events. If you are not an early bird this event was not for you as the competition starts at 6:30 am. The skies are full of hot air balloons with the pilots, some with over 12,000 hours of flying time, jogging for position over the Gregg County Airport. It was an awesome sight to see 75 balloons in front of a red morning sunrise sky. The other event, the W.P.C. Club National Meet, was held in Burbank, California. A wide variety of cars and trucks was there, including the 20's, 30's, and 40's antiques and collectors. Gangster 1933 Plymouth's complete with tommy guns, and town and country cars were there as was a good representation of 50's, 60's, 70's, up to modern drivers. Two E- body modifieds were driven to the show, as was an elderly couple who drove from British Columbia in their 1934 Chrysler convertible. Lunch at the show field, Johnny Carson Park across from the Burbank NBC Studios, was supplied by In and Out Burgers. A fantastic cruise night was held on Thursday at Bob' s Big Boy, a cultural treasure, at this 1949 restored building. This historical landmark is visited by car clubs on Friday and Saturday evenings and has car hop service also. Other tour attractions included the Petersen Museum, Los Angeles Farmers Market, Universal Studios, San Sylmar and Nethercutt Museums, and the last tour, in which Jay Leno calls it his mechanically significant collection. He loves vehicles that are powered by interesting methods, are extremely fast, or has some historical significance, or just interest him in general. The awards and banquet dinner was held on Saturday evening. Thirty- four classes of vehicles were listed on the itinerary, final announcements were made after the awards ceremony. President Bowman's last request was for all to drive carefully, keep good health, and hope to see all at our next national meet in July 2006, at Williamsburg, Virginia. Page 2 From the Vice President It is summer and you can tell by the amount of people that are off on vacation. Turnout to the meetings and cruise nights have been a little on the thin side. The TMCCC races are on summer vacation also and there isn't another one until late september. So... what is a person to do? Match race! Willie and I went out to Texas Raceway for a little fun and grudge match race. I did the no no and redlighted on the two passes we made handing Willie the best two out of three. Being the gentleman I am I handed him my pink slip... it was a womans pink slip, but a pink slip none the less. We did have a lot of fun. Alan Vasut is still receiving more info for our club history page so we anticipate having it completed in the near future. If anyone has any old photos or even a good story to tell, just let any of the board members have them and we will make sure they get to Alan! Page 3 Activities I don t have much to report this month. I can say that it has been hot enough that I don t move away from the air conditioner much. I do want to remind everybody about the Second Saturday night at Gene Quicks. This month we are going to have the scavenger hunt that was postponed from last month. And we are going to have breakfast food. We are asking everyone to be there by 6:00 so we can start the scavenger hunt at 6:30 and eat at around 8:00. So clean up your car and grab some friends and come on down. We will have the fans blowing in the shop. I guess that is about it for now. I have not been in several years, but I'm able to go this year. After all it is the year of the Road Runner. If I did not go it would be like Rick Mariano missing the year of the Dart. Or Mike Miller missing the May tag Nationals. Some things just go without saying. Beep Beep!! While some of us are at the Nationals many of you will be enjoying good ol' bacon and eggs at Gene's. Gary has prepared a scavenger hunt for us that will start at 6:30, don't be late. After the scavenger hunt we will eat breakfast for supper. The club will provide eggs, bacon, sausage, bread a cooker and something to eat on and eat with. The shirt will be free to all club members and race team members. If you are a club member and do not race with the race team I would like for you to be at the August club meeting and give me your shirt size. If you are unable to attend the August meeting please contact me and let me know your shirt size. email bbuchanan8@juno.com or 972 617 2068. Thanks for your cooperation! The Dallas Mopar Club will be having their annual show on Labor Day weekend again this year, but it will be at a new location. We will have a map and directions soon. The show will be September 3rd & 4th at Central Park in Garland. It is said to have more room and more shade. Sounds good to me. We will be giving a club patriotic shirt to everyone who participates, be sure and see me at the show. We supported our Dallas Mopar brethren in a big way last year; let's do it again this year.
