FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE JUNE 2017 ISSUE 303 GOLDWING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION, REGION A, FLORIDA DISTRICT Here it is June already and the heat is upon us, remember to keep hydrated. Best to drink water and more water, coffee and soda tend to not work so well. Monthly Gathering First Thursday of each Month At 582 Blanding Blvd 6:30 pm Eat STAY IN TOUCH! Chapter Director 904.276.7488 We did attend two Chapter events recently. Thanks to all the Wingnutts that were able to participate: First was FL1-K Palm Coast at a church hall in Flagler Beach, it was very well attended by Florida GWRRA membership. Second was FL1-Y Gainesville at a Legion Hall in Lake City, we supported them but not so much of the Florida GWRRA membership. A Good time was had by all who attended both events. We now have the 2018 Goldwing Raffle tickets to distribute among our members to sell. See Marc Oakley to get a few books for your friends and relatives. One of them could win a $10,000 cash prize. And you could win $200 for selling the winning ticket, plus the chapter gets $1 for every ten tickets sold. Hope to see you sooner than later. www.fl1- x.org/chapterteam.html www.gwrra.org GENO AND KATHIE CHAPTER DIRECTORS FL1-X ASSISTANT DISTRICT DIRECTORS FOR NORTH FLORIDA

When you ride in a group, your actions not only affect you, but the other riders as well. Therefore, it is important to recognize and remember that riding in a group is a TEAM effort. To be safe, you must rely on the cooperation and coordination of all riders in that group. In order to survive on the open road, your motorcycle riding habits and techniques must be constantly thought of as defensive. The GWRRA titles Group Riding as Team Riding. They also list two other types of group riding styles which are Mass Riding (Called Pack Riding on the Motorcycle Safety Site ) and Leisure Riding. Mass Riding is considered an undisciplined group traveling down the road doing its own thing with no one paying any attention to the other group riders. Leisure Riding is considered to be traveling in a group of people you know with some ground rules that have been set which everyone agrees to abide by. It is generally considered a little safer than Mass Riding using an element of discipline and coordination such as traveling down the road maintaining at least two second spacing with each other. But, and this is an important but, the individuals are primarily riding their own ride without the ongoing coordination and communication between group members. Typically, there is no formation or team technique to Leisure Riding. Each rider is responsible for their own safety, Ride Your Own Ride ; however, during normal riding (no safety issues) the group should stay in a staggered formation (in your track) at the proper intervals (spacing) unless the Lead Bike calls for a change. Obviously when safety issues arise each individual must take appropriate actions, thus Ride Your Own Ride. Maintaining your track and spacing is important for the safety of the entire group. It helps prevent drivers from pulling out into middle of the group or changing lanes and cutting off other riders in the group. Staying in your track also helps the bike behind you to maintain the proper spacing. When you don t hold your position in the proper track the bike behind you has no choice but to stay back so the proper spacing cannot be maintained. It can also appear to a driver that a space exist so they might try to cut in. Riding together can be very enjoyable. Everyone in the group following a few basic rules makes it even better. Safety is for Life Marc Oakley

HARTLEY HAPPENINGS Hello Wingnutts, and welcome to the month of June. We hope everyone is doing well and enjoying some great riding. Take advantage of the great riding weather and make sure you stay hydrated, as the temperatures are getting warmer every day. Attend various GWRRA events if you can. Membership Enhancement Program Thank you for visiting the Membership Enhancement Program pages! The purpose of the Membership Enhancement Program is to ensure that GWRRA members at every level in the organization have an enjoyable experience while participating in the many opportunities GWRRA provides. To make a long story short we want you to have FUN! We all joined GWRRA because of our love of motorcycling, and that s certainly a primary focus of the organization. And our many Chapters around the globe contribute to the joy of riding by connecting us with like-minded individuals and creating a network of family so that no matter where you go you always have friends nearby. Imagine having a worldwide family that is just waiting to welcome you home, wherever that may be it s a great feeling! Our GWRRA events, from the Chapter level all the way up to Wing Ding, are designed to provide everyone with FUN opportunities that include exciting rides, social gatherings and educational opportunities. And that that feeling of family, of belonging, of more opportunities to have FUN that is what the Membership Enhancement Program is all about! Our goals for the Membership Enhancement Program are to: Participate with Region, District, and Chapter directors to assist in creating the FUN portion of GWRRA s events Ensure that we stay in touch with our current members and have our MEP representatives at every level take the time to really get to know our GWRRA family members better the better we know one another, the more FUN we can have! Contact new and prospective members to give them information about GWRRA and encourage them to have FUN with us. Track successful FUN ideas and share them with MEP staff at every level of the organization Provide information to GWRRA leadership to assist them in planning and making informed decisions about GWRRA s direction While the Chapter Directors are known as the FUN Directors, our Chapter Membership Enhancement Coordinators can support the FUN Directors by becoming the FUN Experts. They are the folks you can talk with about ideas for increasing the FUN in your Chapter life and don t be surprised if you end up becoming more involved as a result! Remember the more you participate, the more FUN there is to be had! Congratulations to the following members on their GWRRA anniversaries: Donna Burn 06/1999 Sammy & Jean Sprouse 06/2003 Larry Pickett 06/2014 Rick Horsley 06/2006 As always, ride safe and remember (ATGATT) All the Gear All the Time!
