Neighborhood Assessment: Ketelsen Study Area Implementation Projects May, 2013

WY WE NEED A CANGE 1 in 3 children (33%) are overweight or obese 43% of kids at Ketelsen are overweight or obese 1 in 3 children born in 2000 will develop diabetes Our children s generation is the first to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. But we can change this! Page 2

OUR FOCUS Childhood obesity is caused by many factors We are focused on two of them ealthy Food Options ow can we help make more healthy food options available in neighborhoods? ow do we increase peoples ability to access more affordable, healthy food options? Active Lifestyles ow do we help children and adolescents get 1 hour or more of physical activity each day? ow do we make sure there is access to quality parks and places to play and be active? Page 3

FOOD ACCESS: WAT WE VE LEARNED 43% of respondents travel less than 1 mile to go grocery shopping. All respondents shop at chain supermarkets, primarily Fiesta, Kroger and Wal-Mart 12% of households that qualify for food stamps do not receive them. Price and nutrition are the #1 concerns for families. I think they need to control the price. Something needs to happen where they control the prices on food as well as vegetables because food is really expensive now. I know it has to do with everything else, oil and gas. I know it plays a part in everything but now it needs to be controlled. Page 4

Page 5

FOOD ACCESS: WAT WE VE LEARNED Focus group participants believe that Parents are the main person responsible for the health of their children. 68% of respondents are very involved in the cooking and shopping for their families. Focus group participants believe that Community and schools are very important in helping to keep kids healthy. If you re not in a safe neighborhood, there s only so much that your parents can do.
