TEAM IOWA Tom & Sue Wright District Directors Hello everyone, well the weather has finally turned in our favor but the roads still have some sand on them so let s be careful out there and have a great season of riding. That being said I believe everyone knows that May is Motorcycle Awareness Month so when out there on the road be extra careful and alert, at the same time make sure we are being courteous to other vehicles on the road and we are putting our best foot forward it will go a long ways with other people on the road. Our Region E Rally will be here before you know it with it being held here in Central Iowa near the Amana Colonies you will have plenty of things to see and do, so come out and join us for a great time on August 11 th and 12 th at the Ramada Hotel Wasserbahn Water Park, Williamsburg, Iowa. The Iowa District Rally will be held In Cedar Rapids at McGrath Power Sports on September 29 th and 30 th, we are still working on this event but it promises to be a great time hosted by a good bunch of people. There are a lot of things going on in Iowa this year with 5 major anniversaries at different Chapters many Chapter rides and get togethers not to mention Wing Ding and many District Rally s around Region E. So, let s get out there and ride and meet many new lifelong Friends. Ride Safe and have a great season on the road Tom & Sue Wright Iowa DD

http://www.bloodcenter.org/webres/file/coordinator/%2311%20-%20didyouknow-rest.jpg TEAM IOWA Roxanne Oder & Roger Munson Membership Enchancement Coordinators Hi! What a great start to the riding season! We put just under 3500 miles on our new to us trike during our Las Vegas bowling trip. We experienced every season on the trip also. It was great! (Maybe not so great for the bowling.) We still need to hear from any Couples of the Year or Individuals of the Year if they plan on participating in the selection process. Resumes will not be due until July 15th, but let us know what you have decided. It is a great experience! We are gearing up for Safety Weekend and hope to see many of you there. Enjoy the Ride! Roxy & Chief IA District Rally Blood Drive Sept. 29 & 30, 2017 in honor of Doug Boemecke

TEAM IOWA Lonnie & Diane Borseth District Educators As we start to ride again this year, I think it s appropriate to read an article written by Doug Boemecke, Iowa Senior District Educator Blood is like a parachute...if it s not there when you need it, it s too late Doug s Article Lonnie & Diane HOW WELL DO WE PLAN? Our lives are involved around planning. We plan when to go to the grocery store, what route we will take to work, when we will visit family, and when we will take a vacation. We plan our expense ledger by working on a financial budget. If we don t have these plans, life becomes helter skelter, and we are in a state of confusion. When we are going to be traveling we plan on lodging, food and fuel stops, what route we will take, and how many miles we will travel each day. But does our planning include how we will handle unforeseen circumstances that may appear? We are on a group ride planned by our Ride Coordinator and he has done a thorough job with a great route and has communicated with everyone via a route sheet, all the details of the trip. Everyone has a CB and the Ride Captain and Drag Rider will communicate with each other and keep the other riders well informed of road trash, when turns will be made, road conditions, etc. Hold on, something just happened that was not expected. The Ride Captain s CB quit working, panic time. But all is well because the rider directly behind him has taken a Road Captain s Course and is well trained. That female rider stays in position and takes on the responsibilities of the Road Captain. She knows the route and where the planned stops are going to be. She watches for the lead riders directional signals and notifies everyone about upcoming turns. The lead rider points to road trash and uses hand signals and the next rider passes on that information to others using her CB. None of this was planned, but because this female rider PLANNED on taking Road Captain s courses and extra training at Iowa s Safety Weekend, the ride went on as if nothing ever went wrong. There is so much planning that should go into our motorcycle rides. Do we have the right riders in the right positions and not just where they want to be? If there is a medical problem with one of the group, will there be someone trained in CPR and First Aid? Who would be the person that could safely direct traffic if there is an accident? How many of our members are trained to lead a ride or direct a ride from the back door position? No one can anticipate where, when, or what emergency or problem might occur. But we can certainly pre-plan how we will handle such an occurrence. As members of GWRRA, especially in the District of Iowa, we have many opportunities to train and learn how to be better riders and co-riders. By attending seminars, riding courses, and CPR/First Aid classes, we can learn so many things that will benefit us and help reduce the risks of riding motorcycles. Plan well and be safe, Iowa Senior District Educator DougB

Lead Like You Ride Course Where were you on April 1 st? If you weren t at the Reinig Center in Toledo you missed the GWRRA Lead Like You Ride Course. Thirty-five GWRRA members from 3 Regions (Region A, E and H), which includes 6 Districts (Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Nebraska, Kansas and South Carolina). What an amazing day, the LLYR Course was conducted in Iowa for the first time. LLYR is designed to maximize a participant s acquisition of knowledge; ensure development of appropriate attitudes, skills and habits; and produce short-and long-term behavior and performance change. What a FUN day to incorporate the concept of the way we ride our Gold Wings with how we lead our Chapters, Districts and Regions. And as many of those in attendance realized on April 1 st, the concept is usable in the work/home life. Thank you to the Iowa District and Region E for supporting this workshop. Clara Boldt Director, Training
