September 2005 www.cowtownmopars.com The Starting Line Newsletter for Cowtown Mopars Performance Team Pictures taken at Dallas Mopars Southwest Mini-Nats 9/3/05 The President s Desk Hey Cowtown Mopars Performance Team it has been a busy month and we will have a lot more activities real soon. The Mopar Nationals was a lot of fun! I got to see CJ Roy run his 65 Belvedere in the Super Stock Class at the Nationals. I got to see Ron Arbelius show his 70 R/T Charger at the Nationals. I got to see Bernie, Sandie, Bryan, Joe, Marty, Rick and many others in action selling their stuff in the swap meet area. It was a great time all the way around. It is such an unusual and cool feeling being overwhelmed by MOPAR stuff. Well done everyone! CONGRATULATIONS to all the CMPT members that participated in the Dallas Mopar Mini Nats this year. The winners will be listed below. We had 20 members show their vehicles and 6 participate in the swap meet. I tried to give everyone a shirt, but if you didn't get yours please let me know. Well done everyone! YEEHAW it is time to go race again! I got new axles in my race car and I'm going to try and do a burnout shifting gears at Kennedale September 18th. If you want to see someone try and make a fool out of themself, be there and bring a video camera. Maybe someone will play it at the meeting. I have challenged Mike Miller at the Kennedale race. The first one to go out will have to conduct the September meeting. Good luck Mike! I will be asking everyone for your shirt size at Kennedale and then order them the following Monday. The first weekend of October will begin with the Good Guys Show at TMS and on October 2nd we will have Mopars at the State Fair of Texas. Please contact Ken and Lesa Key or Dave Mandato or me if you want to show your car at the fair this year. If you plan to go the Good Guys show please contact Steve Wiggin. Both shows are a lot of fun. I hope you can participate. The rest of October will be very busy with the last 2 TMCCC races, a club picnic and the Lone Star Shoot Out in Houston. Page 7 Car of the Month August 2005 Frank Smith s 1962 Dodge Dart Draggin Wagon While planning a trip to New Mexico to purchase a semi-basket case '68 Charger ( I bought a new one in '68 for less money than the wrecking yard model ) Gary Bradshaw said I should take a look at a Dodge over in Irving, also in a wrecking yard. Being a big fan of wagons in the Super Stock wars it didn't take long to make the deal. Besides, I drove a '62 Dart to the senior prom. It wasn't exactly a basket case but it did have about 2 wheel barrow loads of Oklahoma sand in any part that still had a bottom to it. When I got called to the tower for dumping dirt at the starting line at Red Line I told them it was traction compound. Ten months after its arrival at MPAR it was on the track, and at thirteen months it had a bright shiny new paint job. The power plant is a very conservative 440 pump gas motor engineered to go round after round with near zero maintenance, topped off with a Carter AFB an performer intake, exhausted through Hedman headers into 3 inch tubing with x-pipe and really small mufflers. The power takes to the pavement through a 4.56 spool and M/T slicks with Weld wheels on all 4 corners. Best E.T. to date is 12.68 in the 1/4 and 7.97 in the 1/8 th. Not a bad way to start. This project would not have been this successful with out the help of these special friends- Mike Miller for eliminating the rust and giving the body man a great place to start and all the add-ons through the building process, Les Adams for another stout transmission, ad a tough, reliable power plant; my sponsers Express Collision Repair and TaylorMade Graphics and Signs, and Gary Bradshaw for leading me to the wagon and finding the right parts to make this a fun and enjoyable ride. Who says ugly cars can't be pretty. Frank Smith, Owner
Car of the Month September 2005 Jim Buatte s 1965 Dodge Coronet I am a new member of the Cowtown Mopars Performance Team, having moved here from Maine roughly 5 months ago. I now reside in Keller, Texas. My car is a 1965 Dodge Coronet. I drove this car to prom unfortunately it was several years ago. The car has a 400 CID engine out of a 72 Plymouth Road Runner. My uncle, cousin and I recently went through the top half of the motor. They, too, are part of the Mopar family (1978 Lil' Red Express, 1967 GTX, 1968 Road Runner). The Paint on the car is a basecoat / clearcoat, and barely 16 years old! See you at the meeting! Thanks Jim Buatte
