Christopher Newport University In This Issue Symphony Under the Stars Athletics Kicks off Fall Season Professors' New Book Homecoming and Family Weekend September 2011 Fall semester is in full swing. From the arrival of stellar freshmen and the start of classes, to the opening of Forbes Hall and a winning kickoff for Captains athletics, the semester is off to a tremendous start. Ferguson Center CNU Alert Photo Gallery Symphony Under the Stars Soars Ask the President CNU is a work in progress, and we are all striving hard to pursue excellence in all we do. I welcome your advice, suggestions and questions. Let me know how we can do better or where we fall short of expectations. CNU's Symphony Under the Stars was a resounding success! On Sept. 2, we were thrilled as more than 3,500 members of our community shared the Great Lawn for a wonderful evening featuring the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. Email your advice and questions to: AskPST@cnu.edu I will include 1/9

some of your questions and answers in my future communications. 50th Gala Celebration CNU is celebrating our 50th Anniversary throughout 2011-12. We look forward to having you join us on Sunday, Sept. 18, for CNU's Presented as a "thank you" to our friends, family and neighbors for their many years of support, this free concert provided a magical musical evening of Broadway, light classical and film favorites. 50thAnniversary Gala Celebration. 50.cnu.edu For more on the University's 50th anniversary, and related events, please visit 50.cnu.edu. Athletics Kicks off Fall Season 2/9

Fall athletics enjoyed a winning start as several teams scored season-opening victories. The football team won their opener against Waynesburg 12-7. The Captains' defense held the Yellow Jackets to one touchdown, and sophomore running back Markeese Stovall found the endzone twice in the third quarter, scoring on a 62yard dash, then adding a 1-yard run later. The Captains' next game on Sept. 17 will be the first under the lights at POMOCO Stadium. Men's soccer routed Catholic University 5-0 in a match that showcased both the Captain's offensive firepower and defensive prowess. The Captains allowed only two shots on goal in the shutout. Men's soccer is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation for Division III. 3/9

The field hockey team continued their unbeaten streak against Randolph-Macon, beating the Yellow Jackets 2-1. It was the eleventh meeting between the two teams. The Captains fell just short of a shutout, as the Yellow Jackets managed to score in the waning minutes of the second half. CNU volleyball scored a 3-0 win over Hollins. Senior Chelsea McClure led the attack with eight kills. The Captains were also strong on defense in the match, holding Hollins to a negative hitting percentage. 4/9

The cross-country teams both won their season openers against Virginia Wesleyan, the second straight year the Captains have beaten the Marlins to start the season. Champions on the field as well as in the classroom, our student-athletes bring pride to CNU, and the upcoming year in sports promises to be an exciting one. Last year CNU set school records for total wins (267) and its cumulative winning percentage (78 percent). Come cheer the Captains on to another record-breaking year by attending one of their games or matches. Go to CNUsports.com for team schedules. Professors Pen Noteworthy Book 5/9

I am pleased to announce a new book hot off the presses. Dr. Lisa Spiller, professor of marketing, and Dr. Jeffrey Bergner, former assistant secretary of state and visiting professor of leadership and American studies at CNU, have teamed to publish Branding the Candidate: Marketing Strategies to Win Your Vote. Through their timely publication, Drs. Spiller and Bergner examine political marketing strategies, including those used in President Obama's 2008 campaign. Combining the business, marketing and political worlds, their study empowers voters to become sharper, more informed political consumers. Please join me as we welcome the authors on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. to discuss their book in the Blechman Reading Room in Trible Library. A book signing and reception will follow. Save the Date! Homecoming and Family Weekend Campus will be bustling with activity Oct. 21-23 as we celebrate both Homecoming and Family Weekend concurrently this year. 6/9

Family Weekend/Homecoming Homecoming provides an opportunity for alumni to reconnect with classmates and faculty, tour our beautiful campus and new facilities, catch CNU football action under the lights at POMOCO Stadium, and celebrate being a "Captain for Life." Tony Bennett kicks off the event schedule with his return to the Ferguson Center Concert Hall Friday evening. This legendary performer has dazzled audiences for decades with his jazz-inflected renditions of standards from the American songbook. Join us for what promises to be one of the true highlights of an extraordinary season at the Ferguson Center. Saturday morning we will gather on the Great Lawn to bury a time capsule filled with CNU artifacts and memories for future Captains to unearth. We will also commemorate our semicentennial by planting a tree on the Great Lawn. For a list of events, view the complete Homecoming and Family Weekend schedule. 7/9

family weekend photo We will also host CNU families for our annual Family Weekend. CNU students take great pride in their university and love to share their enthusiasm with parents, siblings and others. We look forward to hosting our extended CNU family for the weekend and have a wide array of activities scheduled. Tour campus, visit your son or daughter's residence hall and join us for brunch Sunday morning. See you in October! Ferguson Center off to a Great Start Audiences are enjoying another impressive lineup at the 8/9

Ferguson Center for the Arts. The venue's 2011-12 schedule includes something for everyone - from musical legends Tony Bennett, Patti LaBelle and Paul Anka to "The New Mel Brooks musical Young Frankenstein," rock music's Eddie Money, comedian Lewis Black and many others. The Ferguson Center features outstanding talent all year long - get your tickets now! Sign Up for 'CNU Alert' Notifications In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, I encourage all students, families, faculty and staff to sign up for our emergency notification system, CNU Alert. During a crisis or emergency, the University's emergency notifications keep registered users informed by text message and email of important alerts and updates. The system proved extremely helpful during the recent hurricane as we shared notifications on storm preparations, campus closings and power outages. If you have not yet signed up for CNU Alert, visit cnualert.info to complete the simple registration process. The Month in Photos As a new feature, each month we'll include a link to a photo gallery featuring images of exciting campus events from the past month. Enjoy! 9/9
