How to Improve Your Skiing or Riding There are a few techniques that are proven to enhance one s skiing or riding abilities that many of us have most likely employed at one time or another during our skiing/riding careers. There s the tried and true method of practice. Simply doing it over and over and over again until, hopefully, it becomes second nature. For example, you probably tie your shoes without looking at them simply because you ve done it so many times that your fingers have such a high degree of muscle memory. Hopefully, all of that practice allows you to get it right and your skill level improves. If not, then frustration sets in and ultimately one gives up. Not for lack of trying mind you but, simply because it doesn t work or it s not enjoyable. Something is missing. What is a person to do? As far as snow sports are concerned, (you re on your own with regard to tying your shoes) this is where your ski club gets involved. The HVSC can address, in a positive manner, the frustration you feel, the plateau that you seem to have reached and your perceived inability to make the leap from that plateau to a higher level of skiing and riding. Forget that woe is me attitude or the belief that you ll always be an intermediate do something positive. HVSC has the means to address the dilemma you may be experiencing. The Ski Improvement Days that will be offered in conjunction with discount lift tickets at several local ski areas and the instruction on some club trips are the first steps to take to enhance your skiing or riding. These days allow members and their guests to take advantage of less expensive skiing and riding opportunities and free lessons from Certified and qualified instructors. Lessons will be available for everyone from first-timers to the upper intermediate who is having difficulty making the transition to being a truly expert skier. Come join us for one of the upcoming Ski Improvement Calling All Instructors Ski/Ride Improvement Days With the rapid approach of the ski season, it s not too soon to begin to think about the Ski/Ride Improvement Days. A benefit of membership in the HVSC is that throughout the ski season knowledgeable and experienced member-ski instructors offer lessons to skiers and riders of all levels. However, before that can begin the group of instructors needs to meet and establish their availability for the season. Therefore, if you ve served as a ski/snowboard instructor for the club in the past and are able to continue that association this season, please contact Mark Searle at (845)471-6402 or HVSCSkiTeach@yahoo.com. The objective here is to assemble a group of instructors who will be the leaders of the upcoming Ski/Ride Improvement Days. Newsletter Editors: Mike & Angie Harelick 183 Millers Lane Kingston, NY 12401 845-339-4894 Deadline: 15th of the month editor@hudsonvalleyskiclub. Check the www.hudsonvalleyskiclub.org website for the most recent updates. Lift Ticket Lotto The club holds Lift Ticket Lotto contests at each club meeting during the ski season. Several local and regional ski areas have donated to the club lift tickets in exchange for ads in the newsletter. We ll be giving away tickets to different ski areas at each meeting from now through March 2012. All you need to do to get in on the hot action for this cool deal is to be sure to buy some Lift Ticket Lotto tickets at the next meeting. For November there will be only one Lift Ticket Lotto at the November 16 meeting as the November 2 meeting is the Winter Expo. The area lift tickets available at this month are Catamount, Hunter, Mt. Snow, and Thunder Ridge. Ticket prices for Lift Ticket Lotto are $1 for 1, 6 for $5 and 15 for $10. Your support of Lift Ticket Lotto helps the Club in its many activities. October 5 winners: Butternut - John Macek, Catamount - Pat Cummins, Gore - John Macek, Hunter - Mark Searle Mark Searle hvscskiteach@yahoo.com Days and you ll be pleasantly surprised at how much better your skiing and riding will become. You may learn about the highly secretive French technique for ski improvement. Be sure to see the coming newsletter for more information about the ski improvement days and a schedule for the discount lift ticket opportunities. If you plan to participate in one of the Ski Improvement Days, please contact the club s Instruction Coordinator, Mark Searle at (845)471-6402 or HVSCSkiTeach@yahoo.com to ensure that there will be appropriate instructors available for the given event.

HVSC Seventeenth Annual Holiday Raffle Come and join us for a night of fun at our 17th Annual HVSC Raffle on December 7th at the Clarion Hotel (formerly the Mercury Grand & Best Western) on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie. The Club will provide complimentary Hors D oeuvres from 7 8 PM, and there will be a cash bar available. The Raffle will start promptly at 8 PM, so please come early and give yourself plenty of time to buy raffle tickets, decide what prizes you want to win and meet other Club members. We will continue with the same format as last year, where prizes will be grouped together in baskets for added value for members. You will have a chance to browse all the goodies and choose the baskets you want to win. After purchasing your tickets, you may place as many tickets as you want for the baskets of your choice. For example, you may want to put all your tickets in one try to win two tickets for Gore, or choose to put a few tickets for many different prizes. To make this night a success, we need all our members to help by attending this event and also obtaining donations from local merchants. Some suggestions are time shares, condos, restaurant gift certificates, store certificates and service items. Remember the other sports we participate in, such as golf, tennis, kayaking, biking, etc. Donation letters on Club letterhead are available to download from the Members-only Club Web page. All donations must be received by November 16th. We will need this time to organize, group and package the prizes. Please bring all donations to the November 16th meeting or send them to: Carole Daniels, 388 Freedom Rd., Pleasant Valley, NY 12569. Page 6 HVSC President s message 8 weeks, 6 weeks, No, they should be open in Vermont by mid-november. I say, Bring it on! I m psyched. But, am I ready skis sharpened and waxed, bindings checked, boots cleaned, poles checked, and gloves duct-taped? There s one important item missing from the list your conditioning. At our first meeting in October, Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. David Stamer (also a skier) mentioned how the changes in ski equipment have affected the types of injuries that occasionally happen during skiing/snowboarding adventures. But what really got my attention was his advice on proper and early conditioning in preparation for the slopes, with particular attention to toning the muscles of the legs and ligaments around the knees. So how s that membership at the fitness center working for you? Time to get back at it. There are also home exercises recommended by ski fitness coaches that help toning; again, especially to strengthen around the knees and to develop balance, which is one of the most important components for good skiing and snowboarding. Try this: place two high back chairs (kitchen) back to back approx 24 apart on a flat surface. Now, stand between them on one foot (preferably bare or with thin socks), and very slowly lower yourself approx one foot (hold on to the chairs only in case you lose your balance), now raise yourself up fairly quickly, all the while trying to maintain your balance. Repeat this 5 or 10 times and then switch to the other leg. Note that initially your feet may quiver, but as toning continues it will subside. Increase the repetitions a couple of times each week and you will notice substantial improvement in your balance and strength of legs and knees. Women s Ski Clinic at Okemo January 30-31 This is not an official club trip but a general invitation for anyone who wishes to participate. A few of the women in the club are attending the January 30-31 Women s Ski Clinic at Okemo. The two day clinic is for all levels of skiers and costs $370. Anyone else who is looking for two days of midweek skiing at Okemo is also invited. We will be booking the hotel shortly, so please contact Nancy at eganpost@frontiernet.net if you would like to join us or if you have questions. I am hoping to put together additional ski meet-up dates during the ski season. If you are looking for ski buddies check on the Hudson Valley Ski Club-Trips Facebook page. All members are encouraged to post their ski plans, invitations or requests to carpool and any special deals they may have discovered. A piece of exercise equipment that can produce equal results, if not better, is called a Fitter, or balance board; which is a flat, round disc approx 18 in diameter, with a half round sphere on the underside. It will also provide excellent toning and balance, thus lessening the chance of injury. See you on the slopes in 8 weeks 6 weeks. Cheers. Herb Eschbach President
