Corpus Christi (8-6, 55-29) at Springfield (6-7, 47-36) Friday, July 8, 2016 Hammons Field Springfield, MO 7:10 p.m. ON THE RECORD: 23-18 Home 32-11 Road 15-6-3 Series 5-1 Sweeps W 2 Streak 3-2 Last 5 6-4 Last 10 MAXIMIZING MISTAKES: Corpus Christi capitalized on strong pitching, timely hitting, and a slew of Cardinal miscues, locking up a series victory over Springfield Thursday night with a 4-3 triumph at Hammons Field. The game featured a duel between Francis Martes and Luke Weaver, both listed as No. 3 prospects in their respective systems. Martes did not disappoint, holding the Cards to two runs over six frames. A two-out RBI triple by Luke Voit led to a first-inning run for Springfield. Martes stranded two in the second and recorded the first two outs quickly in the third. An error and two hits followed, including an RBI double by Paul DeJong. Voit tried to score on the DeJong extra-base hit but was cut down at the plate thanks to the quick work of RF James Ramsay & 2B Mott Hyde. Weaver surrendered two hits and two unearned runs over six innings of work. CC scored twice against him in the second. With two away, Garrett Stubbs ripped a 2-1 pitch into the left-field corner for a two-run double. J.D. Davis, who reached via an error, was the first to cross the plate. Weaver responded by retiring 13 of the next 14 batters to finish his night. With the score level at 2 in the ninth, Danry Vazquez, who opened with a double, scored on a botched double-play ball. Alejandro Garcia added a two-out RBI single. Scott Weathersby, making his Double-A debut, earned the victory after tossing two shutout innings. Ryan Thompson allowed an unearned run in the ninth but was able to strand a pair to secure the save. The club has not lost a road series since July 15-18, 2015, at Frisco. Corpus Christi is 12-2 at Texas League North ballparks this year. SERIAL WINNERS: The Hooks secured the series win with a hotly-contested victory last night. Corpus Christi is 12-3 with 1 spilt in its last 16 sets, and 2 of those setbacks occurred on the recent homestand. They key in this run has been Game 1, with the Hooks claiming 15 of the last 16 series-opening bouts. V FOR VASQUEZ: OF Danry Vasquez led the charge last night with 3 hits, including a pair of doubles. Vasquez also scored 2 of the club s 4 runs. WIN FOR WEATHERSBY: RHP Scott Weathersby, joined the Hooks Wednesday from High-A Lancaster, retired 6 of the 7 men he faced in his Double-A debut last night. Weathersby owned a 2-4 record and 6.00 ERA in 15 games (8 starts) for the JetHawks. The 24-year-old from Hattiesburg, MS, has struck out 43 against 16 walks in 60.0 innings. The California League batted.306 with 10 home runs against him. A 10th-round pick in 2015 out of Ole Miss, Weathersby last worked for Lancaster on July 3 when he struck out 3 over 3.0 shutout innings at Lake Elsinore. COTTON RETURNS: LHP Chris Cotton rejoins the Hooks bullpen this evening. Cotton, who began the year with Corpus Christi, was rehabbing an injury at Tri-City in the New York Penn League. The Shreveport southpaw did not allow a run over 4 assignments with the Valley Cats, striking out 6 against 1 walk and 2 hits in 4.2 innings. Cotton stands 1-0 with a 1.62 ERA in 8 appearances for the Hooks. He fanned 11 and walked 4 in 16.2 frames. Cotton logged 5 scoreless outings and stranded all 3 runners he inherited. The 25-year-old LSU product was called up to Fresno in late May, where he registered a 6.55 ERA in 6 games. After permitting 5 runs in his Triple-A debut, Cotton limited the Pacific Coast League to 3 tallies over his remaining 5 assignments, covering 8.1 innings.
