COOKING WITH KIDS! Montgomery County 4-H put on an after school program, Cooking with Kids! for all area youth grades 4 th and 5 th on Wednesday early releases in March at the White Fair Building on the Montgomery County Fairgrounds from 2-3:45pm. With 6 excited youth present for the program, the afternoons covered nutrition, basic safety and awareness in the kitchen, and learning to cook! The first session on March 4th began with a fun get to know you game, followed by learning about the food pyramid. Youth then made and enjoyed French toast, learning to use a skillet and the stove top and also started creating a cookbook they could add all their recipes to. The second session on March 11th youth learned several different kitchen tasks after decorating aprons they would be able to wear each time and then take home. Youth learned how to cut fresh fruit and use a food processor to make healthy homemade lemonade. In addition to the lemonade they made pizzadillas and learned to use a grill. The third session on March 25 th focused on deserts. Youth learned to use the oven and kitchen mixer making chocolate chip cookies. The last session, held on April 1 st, youth cooked an entire meal! They worked together to bake lasagna, salad, garlic bread, and apple snicker salad. While it was baking they learned about properly setting the table along with table manners. Youth then enjoyed their delicious meal! Throughout the sessions, youth learned many fun and easy recipes they can recreate at home, the importance of kitchen safety, all about nutrition, and got to experience using lots of different kitchen tools! Swine Weigh In A successful 2015 Swine Weigh In is in the books! Thanks to our wonderful swine superintendents & other amazing volunteers it went very smoothly! 81 head were weighed in on Saturday! All swine information from Saturday has been input into 4-H Online! Please go in and verify that all information is correct! It is easy to mistype or switch numbers around, so please go double check that everything matches your pink sheets from weigh in! If any corrections need to be made, please give me a call (712.623.2592) or email me hpeck@iastate.edu, so we can get it changed, BE- FORE you "verify". The last day to verify is May 15th and I cannot change any information after it has been verified! If you have additional pigs that you will need to ID, that you did not bring to weigh in, those will need to be done on 4-H Online by May 15th and pictures will need to be posted of anything NOT weighed in. If you need additional tags, you can pick them up at the Extension Office! Finally, swine exhibitors please write your thank you notes to Southern Hills Veterinary Services (1677 200th Street Red Oak, Iowa 51566) for providing the Ivermectin for all swine at weigh in, in addition to Montgomery County Pork Producers (Dennis Carlson, 1902 230th Street Red Oak, Iowa 51566) for providing 4 ear tags per exhibitor!
