FOSSILS SOUTH JERSEY www.fossilscarclub.com Fossils Newsletter Month: May By Rich Dalfonzo FOSSIL TRUSTEES Bill Wheeler: Secretary Joan Wheeler: Car Show Coordinator & Web Designer Bonnie VanDusen: Treasurer Walter Scott: 501 c3 Coordinator Simon Huizer: Trustee at Large Mel Boyce: Trustee at Large Buzzy Fenn: Cruise Night Co-Chair Mustang Sally As I write this tribute to Ford s 50 th year of producing the iconic Mustang, there is one parked on the Observation Deck, 86 floors above the streets of NYC. It is ONE of 1964 special edition units produced to celebrate the anniversary of an American dream, that is Carroll Shelby s dream. This 2015 yellow, drop top was carefully taken apart and reassembled for the photo shoot. Imagine what that unit will be worth in the future. This media frenzy, however, was done once before, by Ford, in the fall of 1965, when a 66 STANG was looking down on the competition. Although all of the 60 s Mustangs are still in great demand, the 67 and 68 Fastback ponies still seem to capture the greatest amount of attention, especially if they are the big block units. Now, Chevy and Mopar fans will argue which company is the best, but everyone will silently admire a vintage Mustang. If you couldn t afford to own a Mustang back in the mid 60 s, you could rent a special GT- 350H model from Hertz Rent-A-Car. Hopefully, you liked black because all 936 ordered cars were black with gold stripes. Those vehicles would cost you $17.00 a day and 17 cents a mile. Imagine how people must have beaten these rentals. I remember seeing a few at Race Way Park on Sundays. To own an original Hertz Mustang today is not for those on a fixed budget. They can bring six figures at auction. If you think these older units were quick, test drive a new BOSS Mustang and scare a few years off of your age. 1

Spotlights: If you look at a Hemmings Motor News, you will see a great number of sellers who claim their vehicles are rare. Perhaps the only rarity is that the make, model and year are not seen very often. Rarity is when a vehicle was produced in a limited number. While Dodge produced 75 thousand plus Dodge Darts in 1964, each dealer was allowed only ONE Golden Anniversary Edition. Cathi Scott is the proud owner of one of the few Golden Darts still on the road. Purchased in 2001 from a private owner, this pretty unit originated from a Lakewood, NJ dealership. It was in super condition, only needing some TLC and a one barrel carb to propel the might Slant 6 forward. Cathi s car has ventured to shows out-of-state, and has been reliable and trophy worthy. Despite its exposure to the natural elements, this Dart looks great; almost a time capsule car. Vintage Darts are not commonly seen at car shows or cruise nights, but this Special Anniversary Golden Dart is unique and period correct. It may not rumble, but it doesn t stumble while cruising the road of America.
