CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Peachtree City Chapter - American Singles Golf Association August 2009 July Events July 12 Links Peachtree City Singles Hot fun playing golf at the Links in Jonesboro. Several members decided to get together on Sunday morning to enjoy a challenging round of golf. Despite the heat, we had a great time joking about wanting to go to the beach as we kept getting into the sand traps. We enjoyed lunch at Bugaboo Creek and laughed about our adventures on the course. Our group members were Lillyan Moore, Gale Botwick, and Bill Sammartano July 18 -- Whitewater Creek (with Atlanta Singles) Every time our group plays this course we are reminded of the nasty rough as well as the number of water holes that somehow magically eat our golf balls! In spite of these challenges, we persevered quite admirably!!! We had a terrific group of 20 players and a fabulous weather day as well. There was enough of a breeze to cool us off, and the wind did not create too much havoc with our golf shots. Seventeen players ended our day with dinner and socializing at Smokey Bones in Peachtree City. Thanks to everyone for a terrific day!! Peachtree City Participants: John Angelo, Kathleen Clery, Tom Fowler, Linda Gendron, Jeanne Mayer, Lillyan Moore, John Sarrica, Melanie Spamer, and Dick Wilhelm. Prize Winners: Linda Gendron -- Women's Closest to the Pin; Lillyan Moore -- Women's Straight Drive. July 19 -- BridgeMill (with Atlanta Singles) What a glorious day we had playing at BridgeMill the weather felt like early fall rather than the middle of summer! Many of us watched the final round of the British Open in the restaurant prior to teeing off; we were disappointed when Tom Watson missed his par putt on the 18 th hole to win. Even though we did not watch the play-off, we were provided with periodic updates and ultimately knew that one of our local PGA professionals, Stewart Cink, had won his first major. The course was in great condition, except for too many ball marks on the greens. The good news is these marks seldom interfered with our putts (or at least I did not hear any complaints!). We had 19 players, including one late addition who called me a couple of hours prior to our start. After golf, 12 of us relaxed over drinks and dinner at Little River Grill. We sat on a deck overlooking Lake Allatoona, and watched the sun set over the Lake. A special THANKS to Carol Klafter for recommending this restaurant it was a big hit!!! Peachtree City Participants: John Angelo, Mary D'Ambrisi, Pat Farris, Linda Gendron, Micki Graham, Sue Heffelfinger, Carol Klafter, John Sarrica, and Melanie Spamer. Prize Winners: Pat Farris -- Women's Straight Drive. July 25 -- SummerGrove The humid Atlanta summer weather was back for the group of 14 players. In spite of the stifling heat, we all persevered and completed the round in a little over four hours. We finished so early that I had to change the dinner reservation time, and even then we waited at Ruby Tuesday for close to 30 minutes before our group was seated! The course was in good condition, except for the practice putting green. This was closed due to damage caused appar- National Website: www.singlesgolf.com E-Mail: ASGANational@aol.com Office Hours: 8:00am to 4:00pm, M-F (Eastern) National Office: 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE To join ASGA or renew your dues, contact the National Office at above number or go to www.singlesgolf.com/join Regular Meeting Date: Our meetings will be held quarterly Next Meeting: Check your e-mail for Meeting Date & Location Meeting Location: TBD Our Website: www.peachtreecity.singlesgolf.com Our Hotline: 1-888-465-3628 (See next page for list of officers and board members.) Unfortunately we did not have two markers on the 18 th hole for the Straight Drive prize holes I had asked for a man and woman marker so the prize money was split three ways and there was no Women s Straight Drive winner. Participants: John Angelo, Kathleen Clery, Mary D Ambrisi, Tom Fowler, Everett Jenkins, Melanie Spamer, Nancy Tkaczuk, and Dick Wilhelm. Prize Winner: Mary D Ambrisi -- Women's Closest to the Pin. JULY 26 Spring Fling Reunion Coweta Club GC in Newnan, Ga Since the Spring Fling was such a success, we had a reunion of members who helped make that weekend great. The club paid for golf and lunch. We also invited several old members who contributed in making the Peachtree City Chapter the wonderful club that it is today. Larry and Christine Campbell were not able to join us for golf because they had Christine's 4 grandchildren in for a visit, however, they came out to greet us before we started off. Richard Cordobas has had a knee operation and could not play, but joined us for lunch. We were so glad to see them again even though they could not play with us. We missed Marc Gober, Kathy Tulley, Diann Cupertino and Mary Beth Cobia. These guys were out of town but worked hard at making the Spring Fling and our chapter a success. We had lunch afterwards in the clubhouse. Participants were: Bruce Spieloch* Ellen Ingram, Jeanne Mayer, Cindy Zeldin, Debbie and Eddie VanBuren, Elaine Watkins, Lana Wingerson, Melanie Spamer, John Angelo, Bill Sam, Gale Botwick, Bob Picariello, Theresa Siegrist, Dick Wilhelm, Barbara Gwinn Randy and Ann McClure, Sandy Kirkpatrick, Lillyan Moore Upcoming Events Sun City Peachtree; Griffin, GA Saturday, August 29 -- 2:00 PM Limit: 24 (Sign-up Deadline is August 17) 5903 or mspamer@comcast.net for more details This Gary Stephenson design is located off Highway 92 in Griffin. Thirty-two of the 54 holes are built on the shores of Lake Saughatchee. The premier course in the complex is the Links Course and perhaps the most scenic is the Lake Course, where water is in play on 12 of the 18 holes. Also, the Auburn Marriott Opelika Hotel & Conference Center is an exceptional golf retreat. Located in the quaint, historic town of Opelika, this hotel overlooks the award-winning Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Rules and More Rules Q. Larry noticed that one of the players in the foursome used a heavy headed Odyssey putter to lag the ball for his 80 plus foot putt. It was a great approach leaving him less than a 4 foot putt. The golfer then used a Callaway blade putter to sink his 4 footer for par. Larry tilted his head and said, not so fast partner, that s a two stoke penalty, just like you can't change balls on a hole, so too can t you change putters. Was Larry correct? What is the correct ruling? What is the correct ruling? A. No penalty. Larry was incorrect. Just as you may have more than one wedge, so too may you have more than one putter. And, you may use more than one putter on the same hole/green. B. One stroke penalty, Larry was right, you can't use multiple putters on the same green, but only a one stoke penalty, not two. C. Two stroke penalty. Larry was right, you can't use multiple putters on the same green, two stoke penalty. And the answer is... The answer is A, Larry was incorrect. Just as you may have more than one wedge, so too may you have more than one putter. And, you may use more than one putter on the same hole/green.. The rules limit us all to 14 clubs. In theory you could have 14 putters if you so wished. And for Larry, that might even be a game improver. In this case, two putters were legal and one may use multiple putters for multiple putts on the same green, if required. CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION AUGUST 2009 The national office of the American Singles Golf Association (ASGA) has announced another great opportunity for singles to meet, greet, then battle it out on great golf courses. Venue: Myrtle Beach, USA. With somewhere between 80 and 100 golf courses in the area (depending on who you speak with), Myrtle Beach is simply the natural place to be when it comes to playing golf in the Fall. The weather is cool but not cold and the sandy soil is ideal for grass-growing conditions. All-in-all, mix the beautiful weather with the great golf and many friends from across the country, and you ve got the making for a great golf weekend. This year, the national office has signed an agreement with the Marriott Grande Dunes, located right on the beach in Myrtle Beach. It s a AAA Four-Diamond hotel and is ranked as one of the Top 500 resorts in the world by Travel+Leisure magazine. We ve lined-up s o m e g r e a t courses nearby and have arranged for 10am shotgun starts each morning, so you ll have plenty of time to complete your round before the sun goes down. Date: November 12-15. Cost: Only $399 if you have a roommate, play two rounds of golf (including cart with GPS & range balls), enjoy six food functions, one of which is the Saturday night dinner... filet mignon and salmon and Friday night s themed Cheeseburgers in Paradise, where the best dressed parrothead will get $100. So to get all the details on this fun-filled event, visit the website at SinglesGolf.com/BattleAtTheBeach or complete the registration form enclosed with your monthly newsletter. If you d like to register over the phone, call us at 704-889-4600. Scotland a Definite Since we did our survey last month, we ve spent a lot of time researching the kinds of things that will make our visit to Scotland a memorable one. We were all a little surprised to see the players at the Open Championship wearing long sleeves. This wasn t a fashion statement. It can get a little bit nippy in Scotland, even in the Summer. So if you play Scotland you ve got to understand Scotland. Expect the unexpected and the trip will be even more enjoyable! Please stay-tuned. We don t want to announce anything until it s on paper. For updates, continue to visit the Scotland website, SinglesGolf.com/Scotland New Year s Location To Be Announced Later this month, we ll announce the location for our New Year s event. We will post 2-3 options on a website and will send out a national survey for your input. Chicago Celebrates Tenth Anniversary Congratulations to our fine folks up in ChicagoLand for celebrating their tenth year as a chapter of the American Singles Golf Association! The leadership has done a great job over the years keeping the troops happy and we thank them for that. New Chapters / West Coast + East Coast It s been a busy spring and summer with the implementation of a new start-up section on the website. Persons interested in setting-up new ASGA chapters can find the process simplified by going to SinglesGolf.com/start. We d like to thank Connie Vickroy who has started the Bay Area (San Francisco) Chapter of ASGA and Hallie Currigan, for starting the Savannah Chapter. If you have friends, colleagues, relatives, etc. in a distant city and think they d be an ideal candidate for getting a new ASGA chapter started, please have them contact us. - - Tom Alsop, President / Founder, ASGA Phone 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE GolfASGA@aol.com
