Antron, Matco team get 3rd Top Fuel world title, DSR assured of 16th championship in Funny Car Hagan, Johnson will chase Capps at Pomona finale Antron Brown clinched his third NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Top Fuel world championship on Oct. 30 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and for the second straight year he did it at Las Vegas and was able to bank the $500,000 bonus for Don Schumacher Racing with one event left in the season. In Funny Car, DSR is assured of winning the world championship as points leader Ron Capps and the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T led by crew chief Rahn Tobler head to the season-finale this week at Pomona, Calif., with an 86-point lead over teammate Matt Hagan and the Mopar Express Lane/Rocky Boots Dodge Charger R/T team with crew chief Dickie Venables. Tommy Johnson Jr. and the Make-A-Wish Dodge led by John Collins and funded by Terry Chandler ranks third, 113 behind Capps. The Matco team provided DSR with its 15th NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series championship. But DSR s season win total holds at 25 after none of its eight teams won an event title for the first time in six events and did not have a team in a championship round since being shut out at Houston in May, a span of 16 events.
John Force congratulates Don Schumacher for winning the Top Fuel championship with Antron Brown. Brown and his Matco Tools/U.S. Army team with crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald with car chief Brad Mason won their third championship in five seasons when the only driver who could catch them, Doug Kalitta, lost in the second round and Brown followed with a win in that round of the 16th annual NHRA Toyota Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. First of all, we need to give all the glory to God above for making this all happen, said Brown, who celebrated with his wife, Billie Jo. He lost in the semifinals to good friend Steve Torrence, who went on to win the event title and moved into the No. 2 spot in the standings. This sport goes way back in my life, and my wife knows we do everything together, it s a family sport and that s what it s all about. My whole family my dad, my uncle, my grandma, everybody they instilled in me at a young age: work hard and you can make great things happen. Put great people around you. And I ve been blessed to have every single one of these things happen. CAPPS TAKES POINTS LEAD TO POMONA FOR FIRST TIME Capps, who advanced to at least a semifinals round in each of the first five Countdown to the Championship playoff events, was able to extend his lead to 86 points and only 130 can be earned at the NHRA Finals. Tobler s plan for the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge in the Countdown was to focus on little points in qualifying and averaging a semifinals finish over the six races. The team has earned the most qualifying points (40) of all contenders while advancing to three semis and two final rounds. It s all about how this team has done all year not what I ve done, Capps said. It s down to one more race and we have a lot of things left to do. But we re closer. This is by far the best chance we ve had going into Pomona. It would only be appropriate for this NAPA Dodge team to win the championship because this team already has had a championship year. NAPA AUTO PARTS crew chief Rahn Tobler, left, and car chief Dustin Heim closely observe a run by Ron Capps during the NHRA Nationals at Las Vegas. Ron Capps runs to world championship 2016: Capps arrives for Pomona Finals leading points for first time For the first time in Capps five championship runs he will arrive at the NHRA Finals finale with the points lead; He leads DSR teammates Matt Hagan by 86 points and Tommy Johnson Jr. by 113 while all other contenders have been eliminated from contention;
Capps ended the 18-race regular season with a 202-point lead before points were reset for the six-race Countdown to the Championship playoff that narrowed his lead to 30 points; This is the first season during which NHRA has not awarded a 20-point bonus to a driver leaving an event with new national elapsed-time record. 2012: Capps loses by NHRA-record 2 points to DSR teammate Capps arrived at the Finals trailing DSR teammate Jack Beckman by 23 points but cut the gap to 2 after rallying on his last qualifying attempt to go from No. 15 to No. 1 for eliminations on Sunday. That meant for Capps to win his first championship he had to last one round longer than Beckman but Beckman clinched when Capps lost in the semifinals. 2005: Trailed DSR teammate by 2 points going into Pomona, lost by 8 Capps arrived at Pomona 2 points behind teammate Gary Scelzi when eliminations began, but Capps dream was dashed when he lost in the quarterfinals under the old format that was two years before the Countdown playoff system was introduced. 2000: Not a chance at Pomona Capps arrived at the Finals ranked third and 397 points behind John Force, who had clinched the championship at the previous race at Houston. Capps moved up to No. 2 for the season. 1998: Longshot never materialized Capps arrived at the Finals 91 points behind Force, who clinched the championship when he won in the first round. 2016 NHRA Countdown to the Championship Standings (Official after Las Vegas 2; 5 of 6 playoff races; wins in parenthesis; DSR drivers in CAPS) TOP FUEL FUNNY CAR *** 2016 world champion ** remaining championship contenders *** 1. Alexis DeJoria (1) 2184-362 Matco Tools, DSR enhance Vegas weekend for 3-time champ Brown by announcing extension of marketing partnership that began in 2000 The most important quality of a winning racing organization and business is commitment and loyalty. Few in the world of motorsports reflect that better than the relationship between Matco Tools and Don Schumacher Racing in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. That was exemplified on Oct. 29 with the announcement by Matco Tools, with its network of over 1,700 premier independent mobile tool distributors, and DSR, the most dominant racing operation in NHRA, that their 17-year marketing partnership is being extended with a new multiyear agreement that will include Antron Brown continuing as the driver of the Matco Tools Top Fuel dragster. Matco s relationship with DSR began in 2000 as an associate partner and the next year Matco became the primary sponsor for Whit Bazemore when he began driving DSR s first Funny Car since Don Schumacher retired from the cockpit. Matco was an associate for Brown on a DSR Pro Stock Motorcycle in the summer of 2003, and expanded to primary branding when he moved up to Top Fuel in 2008 with another organization. I ve been part of Matco for a long, long time and it s been a true blessing to be part of such a really great organization like Matco, said Brown, who clinched his third Top Fuel world title on Oct. 29 and has won 45 NHRA titles in Top Fuel with his team led by crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald with car chief Brad Mason. Matco always makes family come first, and they believe in helping make people better. I love that because Matco is a life changer whether you are the driver of their Top Fuel dragster or a Matco Tools distributor. Tim Gilmore, Matco Tools president, is among Brown s biggest supporters.
We couldn t have asked for a better person to represent Matco on the track, Gilmore said. Not only is Antron Brown a world champion in this sport, but he also embodies the key values and mission of our company. He understands the importance of family, service, dedication and trust which has made him a natural fit and someone we are excited to support over the years. Brown moved from NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle competition where he won 16 times to Top Fuel to start the 2008 season. It was the first time the native of New Jersey, who now lives near Indianapolis, drove in the cockpit of a four-wheel racecar. Matco took a really big chance on me, and they caught a lot of flak for doing that, Brown said. But they knew my determination. Any critics were quickly silenced after Brown was the No. 1 qualifier at his first Top Fuel race and won his first NHRA Wally trophy at his fourth race with Matco. We are proud to be able to say that Matco Tools will enter its 18th season with Don Schumacher Racing next year, and we could not ask for a better partner, said Don Schumacher, owner of DSR. Through the years, we have hosted thousands of great Matco distributors throughout the country in our hospitality area and it s been great to have been able to have them join Antron in many, many winner s circle celebrations. In addition to backing Brown s team, Matco Tools is the Official Tool Supplier for DSR which has won 292 NHRA event titles, including 25 this year with one Mello Yello eventl remaining. Since moving to the nitro category, no driver has won more event titles. Brown will start the seasonfinale this week at Pomona, Calif., having already matched career-bests for wins (seven) and final rounds (11). His Matco team is in the midst of one of the best ever five-year runs that includes: 30 event wins, 47 final rounds and winning 40 percent of his elimination rounds over 117 events. Brown has 45 Top Fuel wins in 210 starts. A very special congratulations from noted motorsports artist Bruce Tatman!

Tommy Johnson Jr. reflects on a great season for the Make-A-Wish team. Matt Hagan and the Mopar Express Lane/Rocky Dodge Charger R/T led by crew chief Dickie Venables and assistant Michael Knudsen head to Pomona in second place but needs to gain 87 points in the season-finale when only 130 are available.
Leah Pritchett and her team led by Todd Okuhara and Joe Barlam will arrive at Pomona ranked No. 7 and only 18 points out of sixth and 32 out of fourth. The first-year DSR driver has qualified in the top-2 at the last three events and won her first NHRA Top Fuel pole at Dallas. She advanced to the semifinals at Las Vegas in her Pennzoil dragster and will carry the colors of FireAde at Pomona
Jack Beckman and his Infinite Hero Dodge Charger R/T with crew chief Jimmy Prock set their sixth track record at Las Vegas when they won their fifth pole of the season. Although they have been eliminated from championship contention, Beckman is focused on wining for the third time this year.
Shawn Langdon and the Red Fuel/Sandvik Coromant team have a No. 2 finish in sight and return to Pomona where the team with crew chief Phil Shuler won a year ago.
