4 GYMNASTICS BC interclub The PLAY Gymnastics BC Interclub program is designed to expand the scope of participation in recreational gymnastics in BC. Interclub provides a training framework and offers opportunities for athletes to attend sanctioned events, at which they perform gymnastics routines to showcase personal ability. Designed for all levels of recreational gymnasts, Interclub does not require a minimum or maximum skill level to participate. The program is performance-centred and focuses on the opportunity for gymnasts to perform and take pride in personal athletic achievement. Artistic movement is encouraged and there are no skill restrictions, provided that the skills are being taught in a safe, progressive manner by a qualified coach. Athletes and coaches have creative license in routine development and performances. The Gymnastics BC Interclub program is specifically designed for recreational athletes and is not meant to be used as a developmental competitive or pre-competitive program. Junior Olympic compulsory routines are not permitted in the interclub program. Interclub Categories Overview of categories by discipline WAG MAG TG Performance X X X Performance Plus X X X Performance Challenge X Description of categories Performance: Athletes perform routines and are given positive feedback on each event. Available to all abilities, ages 6+. Recommended training hours: Maximum of 6 hours per week. Performance Plus: Athletes perform routines and are given a score and awarded a gold, silver or bronze ribbon based on their performance on each apparatus. This category is available to beginner-intermediate abilities, ages 9+. Recommended training hours: Maximum of 8 hours per week.

Performance Challenge: Athletes perform advanced routines and are given a score and awarded a gold, silver or bronze ribbon based on their performance on each apparatus. This category is available to advanced athletes performing more difficult skills such as handsprings and saltos, ages 9+. 5 Recommended training hours: Maximum of 10 hours per week. Category Selection Clubs and coaches are responsible for determining the category that their athletes will perform in. While understood that every club will have a different philosophy, budget and event goals, categories have been designed to create an opportunity for athletes to proudly showcase skills and routines in an environment shared with peers of similar age and ability levels. Athletes may move freely from one category to another. Please see athlete eligibility for each category. It is recommended that the following aspects be taken into consideration when selecting an athlete s category: Athlete age Athlete training (hours and stage of LTAD) Athlete skill level (see suggested skill chart in this document) Personal goals of each individual athlete Apparatus and equipment Athletes may perform on any gymnastics apparatus: traditional men s and women s artistic gymnastics apparatus, trampoline, double mini-trampoline or tumbling. Athletes are not limited to one discipline. They can mix and match: for example, athletes may register to perform on only beam and trampoline (if both apparatus were being offered at an Interclub event). The choice of apparatus is not gender-specific. All apparatus are available to all genders. Non-traditional gymnastics apparatus are also permitted, in accordance with GBC guidelines and policies. There are no limitations or restrictions on the use of safety mats and additional equipment (such as beam pads, boxes, etc.) during Interclub events. Supplemental equipment such as routine props, costumes or non-traditional gymnastics equipment is permitted and encouraged. Please keep safety in mind when using supplemental equipment.

6 Performance Category The goal of the Interclub Performance category is to provide an opportunity for gymnasts of all ability levels to perform gymnastic routines and showcase their personal abilities in a fun, positive atmosphere. Athlete eligibility Gymnasts must be at least six years of age on or before December 31, 2017. For the 2017-18 season, athletes born in 2011 or before are eligible to participate in an Interclub event. There are no exceptions to the age eligibility. Athletes must be registered with Gymnastics BC as Interclub members. In British Columbia, acrobatic gymnastics is considered a Gymnastics For All discipline. Acrobatic athletes must register as Interclub athletes to participate in Interclub events. This category is only for non-competitive, recreational level acrobatic gymnastics participants and does not include anyone competing or being ranked. Coach eligibility All coaches must be registered with Gymnastics BC as competitive or recreational coaches. Coaches must be a minimum of NCCP Gymnastics Foundations or Level 1 certified. CITs should be under the direct supervision of a NCCP Gymnastics Foundation or Level 1 certified coach. CITs should not be responsible for the safety of Interclub athletes. If athletes are performing inverted skills, the coach must have NCCP Level 2 technical in the appropriate discipline (artistic or trampoline). Routine guidelines Routines on any apparatus should not exceed 90 seconds. One or two vaults are allowed. Music is optional for women and men s floor exercise and can be lyrical. Safety Although there are no skill restrictions in Interclub, coaches must be aware that advanced skills require more physical preparation, safe repetitions and athlete ability/readiness. By increasing the level of difficulty in training or routines, safety concerns are also increased. Careful consideration should be made to this when teaching advanced skills and increasing difficulty in performances. Participants should be capable of performing all components of their routine with a reasonable level of mastery and competence consistent with the safety and teaching principles of the National Coaching Certification Program

Training principles should be consistent with the the FUN, Fitness and FUNdamentals athlete (stage 2) of the Gymnastics Canada LTAD. 7 It is the responsibility of the coaches to refrain athletes from doing any skill deemed dangerous. Spotting A light spot is permitted during performances. While an athlete may perform a skill sooner with assistance, doing so independently and displaying personal achievement should be the primary goal. Awards Athletes will receive a certificate including positive feedback for each of their performances. Athletes will receive an award (ribbon or medal) recognizing their overall participation in the event. Special performance awards will be awarded for outstanding performances on each apparatus

8 PERFORMANCE PLUS CATEGORY The goal of the Interclub Performance Plus category is to provide an opportunity for beginner or intermediate level athletes to perform gymnastic routines and showcase their personal abilities and in a fun, positive atmosphere while receiving specific performance feedback. Athletes routines are scored, but not ranked and a corresponding bronze, silver or gold ribbon will be awarded based on the score of their routine. Athlete eligibility Gymnasts must be at least nine years of age on or before December 31, 2017. For the 2017-2018 season, participants born in 2008 or before are eligible to participate in the Performance Plus category. 12 hosting guidelines for interclub events Gymnastics BC sanction Clubs must follow the GBC sanctioning policy. Interclub events must be sanctioned but there is no deadline to submit the sanctioning form. Clubs must outline both the apparatus offered and the format of the event in the first meet invitation. Workplan The event invitation should contain the following information: Format of the event, including categories invited. Apparatus offered (i.e. women s apparatus, men s apparatus, trampoline/double mini/tumbling, acrobatic and/or any creative performances). Entry fees are recommended to range between $60-$90. While event hosting costs depend on the city, zones and the amount of work a club puts into their event, clubs should make efforts to keep entry fees reasonable. When Interclub events are combined with another GBC sanctioned event, fees should be reduced. Athlete recognition plan and special awards. Registration form requesting the following data: athlete s name, date of birth, category, apparatus participating in, coaches names, NCCP certification and club. General Host clubs are welcome to set out their own formats and offer varying competition apparatus. There are no format requirements and creativity is highly encouraged. Interclub events should be athlete-centered and aimed at providing a positive and memorable experience for athletes. There should be no more than 50 participants in one flight or session. Each flight or session should last no more than three hours. It is the host club s responsibility to verify that all athletes and coaches participating are registered with Gymnastics BC prior to the event. Host clubs can contact GBC for assistance in finding the list of Interclub athletes. It is the hosts club s responsibility to ensure that adjudicators are properly trained, familiar with their role, and provide each adjudicator with a copy of the Adjudicators Guidelines (pg.14-17). The Meet Director must complete the Interclub Event Meet Director Form (provided at the end of this document) and return it to GBC within seven days of the event s completion.

Awards 13 It is highly recommended that host club place considerable emphasis on the awards ceremony, highlighting each participant s performance. For each athlete, the following individual awards are required: An individual award (ribbon or medal) to recognize each athlete s participation (all categories). A certificate providing athlete with feedback for their performances (Performance Category only) A certificate with the athlete s scores on each apparatus (Performance Plus and Challenge categories only). A bronze, silver or gold ribbon on each apparatus corresponding to the score of their routine (Performance Plus and Performance Challenge categories only). It is recommended that the Meet Director read each certificate before distribution, ensuring that only positive and not constructive comments are included. Special Awards Special awards highlight athletes with outstanding or creative performances. For each Interclub session offered, the special awards listed in the chart below are required. It is expected that the Meet Director will check adjudicator recommendations for special awards to ensure that they are distributed fairly. The host club may also recognize athletes that stand out based on the spirit of their event (e.g. overcoming challenges, being a great teammate). 14 ADJUDICATOR GUIDELINES - Performance (WAG, MAG, TG) General Interclub Adjudicators should be either 18 years of age or hold a NCCP foundations certification. A minimum of one adjudicator is required per apparatus. Adjudicators should be mature and be familiar with gymnastics but do not need to be trained judges (although it can be an asset for the advanced categories). A recommended honorarium is $50 per session. Role of the Adjudicator The adjudicator s role is to provide positive, unbiased performance feedback in the form of either a positive comment or numeric score to Interclub participants following their performance on each apparatus. Adjudicator Responsibilities: 1. Welcoming of athletes at the table Greet the athletes and coaches with a smile and make athletes feel welcome. Explain the warm up format, performance order and ensure all athletes are present. Wish all athletes Good Luck. 2. General guidelines Adjudicators should acknowledge the gymnast with a smile at the beginning and end of the routine. Attention must be directed to the athlete s performance, from start to finish. Distractions must be avoided. Evaluating Routines - Performance Category After each performance, the adjudicators should provide a positive comment written on the participant s certificate. Provide meaningful comments to the athletes. Pay attention to what the athletes seem proud of a special skill that they might have been working on, no fall, something teammates congratulate them on, etc. Constructive feedback should not be included as it does not fit in the philosophy of the Interclub program.

ADJUDICATOR GUIDELINES - Performance Plus (TG) 21 General Interclub Adjudicators should be either 18 years of age or hold a NCCP foundations certification. Wish all athletes Good Luck 2. General guidelines Adjudicators should acknowledge the gymnast with a smile at the beginning and end of the routine. Attention must be directed to the athlete s performance, from start to finish. Distractions must be avoided. Evaluating Routines - Performance Plus (TG) Difficulty score: 2-4 points (see section on TG Interclub Difficulty Guidelines - Performance Plus, pg. 22) Quality of execution of the performance: 2-5 points 5 points EXCELLENT: no errors/falls and good form throughout 4 points GREAT; showed consistent good form with few wobbles/errors 3 points GOOD: showed good form throughout; may have fallen OR had several wobbles/errors 2 points OK: completed routine with poor form/may have had falls. Bonus: 1 point Examples for bonus: stuck landing, dynamics, amplitude, originality/creativity, etc. The final score corresponds to the following award: Gold = 8.5-10.0 points Silver = 7.0-8.0 points Bronze = 5.0-6.5 points

TG interclub difficulty Guidelines - Performance Plus 22 Routines may have an out bounce, which is one straight jump after the last performed skill and before the stop bounce Inversions such as front or back handsprings are not trampoline skills and are therefore not permitted Knee drops, where the hands are not used to distribute the weight safely are restricted skills and must NOT be performed Four spotters must be positioned at the four corners of the trampoline whenever it is in use (this must be enforced on all above-ground trampolines). Spotters should be of sufficient size to render assistance if necessary. There should also be a coach with their attention on the athlete beside the trampoline, ready to jump in if necessary It is recommended that coaches refer to the level 1 and 2 NCCP trampoline manuals for suggestions on routine building. Skills provided are to give example of level and maximum limitation. They are not suggested as limiting or required Credit will be given to encourage execution/control, amplitude and connection Each participant should chose the appropriate difficulty level in each different event i.e. Basic-Tumbling, Challenge-DMT, Advanced-Tramp Each participant must compete in at least two events Mini-Tramp should only be entered as an alternate event to DMT by participants whose club does not train DMT. Each participant must compete in three events for all round-consideration Basic 2 points Routine of average six skills Routine does not have to be consecutive No inversions/saltos Challenge 3 points Routine of average eight skills Routine must be consecutive Maximum one salto Advanced 4 points Routine of average 10 skills.
