Leading the charge is Preseason All-BIG EAST honoree Aliyyah Handford, who averaged 16.7 points per game a year ago and broke the school s sophomore scoring record with 567 points. Anchoring the front court is Amber Thompson, whose 313 boards last year set a school record. Last time out vs Florida: The dynamic scoring duo of Aliyyah Handford and Danaejah Grant put forth another pair of spectacular performances on Thursday night in Carnesecca Arena, netting 27 and 26 points, respectively, to lead the Red Storm to a 72-66 victory over Florida. In addition to her 27 points, Handford pulled down seven boards and grabbed three steals. Grant added six rebounds and three assists. Junior guard Danaejah Grant has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week last week after she finished with a career-high 30 points, converting on 14 of her 26 attempts from the floor against the Bulldogs. Before Saturday, her career-best had been 21, accomplished during her freshman season at Clemson. One of the signatures of the St. John s women s basketball programs in recent years has been shutdown defense. Last season, the Red Storm ranked second in the BIG EAST, allowing just 59.8 points per game in league play. Nationally, the Red Storm ranked 56th in that category. If Marist wins the MAAC Championship title this season, it will be its eleventh overall and tenth consecutive championship title, winning in 2004 and 2006-2014. HUNTER OR HUNTED? In the 2014 MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll, Marist was chosen to take first place along with Quinnipiac, with both teams earning 112 points. Iona was third, receiving 106 points, followed by Fairfield with 81 points. The Red Foxes defeated Quinnipiac 70-66 in last seasons MAAC Championship title game after trailing by as much as 17 points in the first half. CAPTAINS Tori Jarosz, Sydney Coffey, Madeline Blais, and Maggie Gallagher will lead the team this season on and off the court. Jarosz and Coffey enter their senior season with the Red Foxes while Blais and Coffey fill in as junior captains after the loss of Casey Dulin, Leanne Ockenden and Emma O Connor. MAAC HONORS With the selection of Madeline Blaise and Sydney Coffey to the All-MAAC first team and Tori Jarosz selected for the All-MAAC second team this marks the eighth consecutive year the Red Foxes have had three or more players selected to the Preseason All-MAAC Teams. BLAIS ING Madeline Blais led the team in both points and rebounds in the seasons first game versus Delaware. Blais led the team in either points or rebounds a total of 13 times last season. Blais also curently sits at third all-time in the Marist record books for free throw percentage. GOOD O, STINGY D The Red Foxes finished the season 27-7 overall and 18-2 in the MAAC. The team posted their 11th consecutive 20+ win season and eighth straight 25+ win season. The Red Foxes also ranked third in scoring in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 2013-14 and ranked first in defense, giving up STEADY AT THE WHEEL The Red Foxes own the top three assists/turnover ratios of all time in the MAAC and six out of the top ten all-time. Leading the way at the point guard position is Senior Natalie Gomez-Martinez, ranked in the top 50 for assists/turnover ratios in the MAAC all-time. PRODUCTION REPLACEMENT A key theme for the Red Foxes this season will be finding out who will step up and score. The Red Foxes exited last season putting up an all-time number in team points in a season. The Red Foxes ranked fourth all time with 2460 points scored and averaged 72.4 points per game at close to a.500 clip. CONTINUED TRADITION 2013-14 was a record breaking season for the Red Foxes under the leadership of head coach Brian Giorgis. Hitting the 100 point mark, 1,000 point mark, 200 career program wins, 300 career coaching wins, and a 10th MAAC title were all highlights from the 2013-14 season. ON THE REBOUND Not only were the Red Foxes looking to rebound from an opening road loss but after being out rebounded 47-28 and 15-4 on the offensive boards in Delaware they protected the glass much better against Northeastern. They lost the total rebounding battle 41-37 but controlled the offensive glass 13-12. With starting center Tori Jarosz sidelined with a foot injury the Red Foxes will need to rebound as a team in her absence. FIRST HALF? SECOND HALF! The Red Foxes have been outscored by 19 points in the first half of games this season but only by two points combined in the second half. The middle section of the first half has been the teams bugaboo as the team has started out fine but struggle in the on going. In both the Delaware and Northeastern outing the Red Foxes left themselves with a tough hill to climb. FREE THROWS, THEY RE FREE A traditionally strong team from the free throw line, The Red Foxes haven t dissapointed thus far this season. The team features three players who are currently perfect from the line. Junior Forward Madeline Blais is currently 10-10 from the line, junior guard Sydney Coffey is currently 5-5 from the free throw line, and even sophomore forward Katharine Fogarty is getting in on the action with a perfect 4-4 from the line. The Red Foxes as a team are shooting.846 percent from the stripe. FIESTY FOXES With 17 steals on the season already, the Red Foxes are jumping in the passing lanes and creating enough turnovers to keep them in games despite the poor shooting so far. Forcing 29 turnovers on the year thus far, senior guard Natalie Gomez-Martinez has led the way with five steals, sophomore Brittni Lai trails by one, with four, and Junior forward Madeline Blais has three. I M COMING HOME The Red Foxes are 2-3 in their last five home openers with wins against Vermont in 12-13 and North Carolina A&T in the 09-10 season. Last year the Marist women s basketball team played No. 7 Kentucky. The Wildcats defeated the Red Foxes 75-61. Senior guard Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the team with 16 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Senior Emma O Connor (Lynbrook, N.Y.) posted 10 points and the team high 11 rebounds. The Red Foxes won t return home until December but won t leave until January. All five of the Red Foxes December games will be held at McCann Arena, taking on Monmouth, Rider, Albany, Boston University, and mid major powerhouse South Dakota St. TURKEY TRIP After facing St. John s at home the Red Foxes hit the road again, this time for three games in three days at the BTI Classic. The Red Foxes will face off against Stetson on Friday, Utah State on Saturday, and then the host school Baylor on Sunday.
