Earlier this season, the Tritons hosted Grand Canyon and lost in straight sets. UH has won six straight in the series with UCSD and lead the all-time series 49-4. The Warriors had won the first 39 matches in the series before the Tritons swept the season series in La Jolla, Calif., in 2009. 2016 RAINBOW WARRIORS ROSTER No Name Pos Ht Cl Hometown / Last School 1 Joe Worsley S 6-0 Fr. The fourth series opponent is no slouch either in defending national semifinalist No. 9 UC Irvine (March 25-26). FAST STARTS: UH s 6-1 record through seven matches this season is its best since 2005 and just the ninth time in school history the team has posted a similar record or better. The 1980 and 96 squads are the only teams to go undefeated through seven matches while the 1985, 88, 93, 98, 2001, and 05 teams went 6-1. CENTURY CLUB: UH head coach Charlie Wade needs three more wins to reach 100 in his career at UH. Currently, the seventh-year coach has an overall record of 97-80 (.548) and has guided the Warriors to four postseason appearances, including a trip to the NCAA Tournament last season. He is the seventh-longest tenured head coach at their current school in the MPSF behind Pepperdine s Marv Dunphy (33), CSUN s Jeff Campbell (19), Long Beach State s Alan Knipe (13), UC San Diego s Kevin Ring (11), Stanford s John Kosty (10), and UC Santa Barbara s Rick McLaughlin (8). DOUBLE-TROUBLE: After seven matches this season, UH s one-two punch of opposite Stijn van Tilburg and outside hitter Sinisa Zarkovic have reached double-figures in kills in each match. van Tilburg leads the team with a 4.61 kill average, which ranks first in the MPSF and fourth nationally, while Zarkovic is close behind at 4.39, which ranks third in the MPSF and eighth nationally. Outside hitter Kupono Fey is the only other UH hitter to reach double figures, which he accomplished once. GRAND SLAM: Senior outside hitter Sinisa Siki Zarkovic became the 16th player in school history to reach 1,000 career kills during last Friday s match versus Grand Canyon. Currently the senior from Belgrade, Serbia has 1,008 kills. Last week, Zarkovic averaged 4.00 kills and 2.14 digs per set in the two matches versus Grand Canyon. DIGGIN IT: Senior libero Kolby Kanetake cracked into the school s Top 10 list for career digs during last week s Grand Canyon series. Currently, the Honolulu native has 608 digs in 263 career sets for a 2.31 per set average. That average currently ranks sixth all-time. Through seven matches this season, the senior has 65 digs for a 2.83 per set average, which ranks sixth nationally. Last season, Kanetake recorded 305 digs (2.88 avg.), which tied for the second highest single-season total during the school s rally-scoring era. SIGNAL CALLER: At the controls of UH s prolific offensive attack this season is junior setter Jennings Franciskovic. The Westlake Village, Calif., native has led the Warriors to a team hitting percentage of.360, which ranks fifth nationally and second in the MPSF. UH also leads the nation in kills per set (14.65) and assists per set (13.91). The team has hit.400 or better twice this season, including a season-best.459 in the season-opener versus King. This season Franciskovic is averaging 11.57 assists which ranks second nationally. Earlier this month, he helped UH to the Outrigger Resorts Invitational championship in which he was selected to the all-tournament team. HAPPY 21ST: Junior outside hitter Kupono Fey celebrated his 21st birthday in grand style during last week s win over Grand Canyon with his best outing of the season. The Honolulu native posted season-highs in kills (13) and digs (7), while hitting.310 and recording one block solo. BIG SHOES TO FILL: With the departure of UH s two starting middle blockers, All-American Taylor Averill and four-year letterman Davis Holt, a pair of converted opposite/outside hitters are filling the spots this season. Hendrik Mol, a junior from Sand, Norway, and Iain McKellar, a redshirt junior from Macclesfield, England, started all seven matches for the Warriors. McKellar had his best outing of his career last week with nine kills (.636) and four blocks in the rematch versus Grand Canyon. Freshman Nainoa Frank has also seen reserve time in place of Mol and recorded six kills (.750) and four blocks versus Grand Canyon. PROTECT THIS HOUSE: With a 5-0 home mark this season, UH has a current home win streak of 14 matches dating back to last season. The Warriors won their final nine home matches of 2015, which included four two-match series sweeps and a win over Long Beach State in the quarterfinals of the MPSF Tournament. UH has an all-time record of 247-120 (.673) overall and 140-65 (.683) 2016 Rainbow Warrior Volleyball Weekly Release 2 HawaiiAthletics.com
HEAD COACH CHARLIE WADE 7th season Alma Mater: CS Fullerton, 1991 In six seasons as head coach of the University of Hawai i, Charlie Wade has led the Rainbow Warriors to one NCAA Tournament and four Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament appearances. Last season, UH had one of its best seasons in school history, finishing with a 24-7 mark - the most wins since 2004 - and reaching as high as No. 1 in the nation - a first since 2003. The Rainbow Warriors received an at-large bid to the NCAA Play-In Match, their first national appearance since 2002. In 2014, Wade guided the Warriors to a 15-12 mark and a 13-11 record in the MPSF, which surprisingly was not enough to qualify for the postseason tournament. The season included five wins over teams ranked in the top four nationally, including two-match sweeps of No. 3 UCLA and MPSF champion and No. 2 BYU and a win over NCAA semifinalist Penn State. After rebounding from a disappointing 7-20 season in 2012, Wade guided the Warriors back to the postseason in 2013 and not for a controversial call at match point in the fifth set against the Cougars in that quarterfinal match, UH may have pulled off the most improbable upset in tournament history. In 2011, Wade guided the Warriors to their second straight MPSF Tournament appearance and finished fifth in the final league standings. Prior to Wade s arrival, UH had missed postseason play the previous two seasons and suffered through three straight losing seasons. In his inaugural year as coach, Wade led the Warriors to a 19-10 mark and a trip to the MPSF Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2003. UH doubled its win total from the previous year and snapped a two-year postseason drought. UH averaged 3,415 fans per match, including a season-best 5,683 for the MPSF quarterfinal match against Pepperdine. YEAR-BY-YEAR RECORD (AT HAWAI I) OVERALL MPSF Season W L Pct. W L Pct. NATIONAL HONORS: Freshman Stijn van Tilburg made an impressive collegiate debut by being selected as the Off the Block/Springback, Inc. National Co-Freshman of the Week following three wins in the Outrigger Invitational. van Tilburg tallied 47 total kills in wins over King (Tenn.), Harvard, and Lewis, for a 5.22 kill average and.519 hitting percentage. In his first collegiate match, van Tilburg had 14 kills, with no errors, in 15 swings, hitting.933 along with one service ace, six digs, and two blocks against King. The following night, he tallied a match-high 18 kills (.400) and had six digs versus Harvard. In the championship match against Lewis, he added 15 kills (.444), three digs, and three blocks. van Tilburg s selection marks the first time in the three-year history of the award that a Hawai i player has been named the National Freshman of the Week. PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN HONORS FOR TRIO: Three Rainbow Warriors were chosen to the 2016 Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Preseason All-America teams which were selected by a nationwide voting committee. UH, along with two-time defending NCAA champions Loyola, and BYU each had a nationbest three players earn preseason All-America honors. Senior outside hitter Sinisa Zarkovic and senior libero Kolby Kanetake were picked to the 10-member first team while junior setter Jennings Franciskovic was named to the 11-member second team. All three were AVCA honorable mention All-Americans a season ago. REPRESENTING THE USA: Junior outside hitter Kupono Fey and setter Jennings Franciskovic had quite a summer, touring with the United States Junior National Team to a pair of international tournament. Fey and Franciskovic helped Team USA claim silver at the 2015 U21 Pan American Cup in Canada and an 11th place finish at the U21 World Championships in Tijuana, Mexico. The duo spent nearly two weeks training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. before making the trek up to host nation Canada for the Pan Am Cup, where they lost to Brazil in the gold-medal match. After a few weeks off, the pair returned to U.S. MJNT action, at the FIVB World Championship in Mexico but landed in the toughest opening pool, dropping three-straight matches to Russia, Argentina, and Poland. Team USA rallied in the consolation pool to take 11th, its same finish as 2013. THE BEST IN THE NATION: Hawai i regained the title as national attendance leader in 2015 after averaging 3,671 fans per home match, the program s highest average since 2006 (4,231). UH drew a season-high crowd of 7,296 on Senior Night against Stanford (April 11) for the best home singlematch crowd since 2004. BYU led the nation in attendance from 2012-14. Previously, UH led the nation for 17 straight seasons from 1995-2011. Through five matches this season, Hawai i is averaging 3,052 per contests, second nationally to BYU (4,563).
